Generic name: Pravastatin.
Brand names: Pravachol.
Available as tablets.

How to use it?
- Tablet: just swallow it whole with half a glass of water.
In addition it is best to take this medicine in the evening after eating or before going to bed. At night, the production of cholesterol by the liver is highest. This way you will benefit the most from the effect of this drug.

When to use it?
Pravastatin is part of a group of drugs called Statins. They inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which normally plays an essential role in the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. This lowers the circulating LDL, the total cholesterol and increased HDL-cholesterol.
Therefore Atorvastatin can be used to treat a high cholesterol, familial hypercholesterolemia and it can be used to prevent cardiovascular disease.

What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- However, when treating adults most doctors will start with an initial dose of 10–40 mg 1×/day, if necessary your doctor might increase your dose every 4 weeks up to a maximum dose of 40 mg 1x/day.

What are the side-effects?
- Uncommon: Fatigue, Hair disorder, Skin rash, Itching, Tendon rupture, Vomiting, Abdominal pain, Diarrhoea, Nausea, Constipation, Difficulty urinating, Diplopia, Blurred vision, Sleep disorder, Sexual dysfunction, Dizziness and Headache.

- Very rare: Angioedema, Anaphylaxis, Hypersensitivity Reaction, Jaundice, Hepatitis and several other serious side effects.

Safety:
- The first days of using Pravastatin it can lead to dizziness. Please do not drive while experiencing this.
- Furthermore, it rarely can cause liver abnormalities which can be increased with consumption of too much alcohol. Therefore it is often advised to not drink or at most 1 glass a day while using pravastatin.
- In addition, pravastatin can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
- Lastly, do not use pravastatin while pregnant or while breastfeeding, as it can be dangerous.

Prazosin (Minipress) Helpful for Nightmares due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Prazosin (Minipress) Helpful for Nightmares due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Side Effects 0 Views • 1 month ago

Prazosin is a unique medication because it’s most known as an anti-hypertension medication to bring down the blood pressure. But it is helpful to stop nightmares especially in cases of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It can drop the blood pressure so it’s important to be careful after taking this at night, and getting up at night to use the bathroom or do a task - to make sure you do not feel dizzy or lightheaded after getting up that could be a sign the medication has dropped the blood pressure too much.

The dosing is in 1, 2, or 5mg increments. It should be used carefully when someone is on blood pressure medications because the two together can drop the blood pressure. Because of that effect, what one can do is measure their blood pressure before taking the medications, and if it’s less than 90/60 or the heart rate is less than 60, to not take the medication.

Some reports are also that it can help with other Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms. This makes sense because the nightmares or scary dreams can not only affect one’s sleep, but also one’s thoughts and moods the next day. So when people who take this medication have less recollection of their nightmares, it’s likely their thoughts and moods will be better as well.

Prazosin blocks the alpha receptors in the body and these receptors most often respond to adrenaline or norepinephrine. So in a way it could be slowing down or stopping that adrenaline response that people who are in fight or flight mode in cases of anxiety or Post Traumatic Stress may experience. It could be in the form of nightmares at night, but maybe someone is having vivid dreams or wakes up scared or sweating - this could also help in that case.

Some other side effects include a sustained erection, dizziness, headaches, feeling like one’s heart races fast, trouble breathing or increased fluid in various tissues around the body.

Unlocking the Benefits of Prazosin: A Comprehensive Guide
Unlocking the Benefits of Prazosin: A Comprehensive Guide Side Effects 0 Views • 1 month ago

If you're someone who struggles with anxiety, PTSD, or nightmares, you may have heard of a medication called prazosin. This medication has been gaining popularity in recent years as a way to alleviate the symptoms of these conditions, but many people still have questions about what it is, how it works, and whether it's right for them. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the benefits of prazosin in detail, from its origins as a blood pressure medication to its current use in mental health treatment. We'll also discuss the potential side effects and risks, as well as how to talk to your doctor about whether prazosin is a good option for you. Whether you're considering prazosin for the first time or looking to deepen your understanding of its effects, this guide will provide all the information you need to make an informed decision about your mental health. So, let's dive in and unlock the benefits of prazosin together.
What is Prazosin used for?.
Prazosin is a medication that was originally developed to treat high blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels, which allows blood to flow more easily through the body. However, it was later discovered that prazosin also has an effect on the brain, specifically on the part of the brain that regulates the fight-or-flight response.
Because of this effect on the brain, prazosin has been found to be effective in treating certain mental health conditions. In particular, it has been shown to be helpful for people with PTSD who experience nightmares or flashbacks. It has also been used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.
How does Prazosin work?.
Prazosin works by blocking alpha receptors in the brain. Alpha receptors are a type of receptor that are involved in the fight-or-flight response. When we're in a stressful or dangerous situation, our bodies release adrenaline, which activates the fight-or-flight response. This response causes our heart rate to increase, our breathing to become more rapid, and our blood vessels to constrict.
When alpha receptors are blocked, the fight-or-flight response is dampened. This can lead to a decrease in symptoms such as anxiety, panic, and nightmares. It's important to note, however, that prazosin does not eliminate the fight-or-flight response entirely. Rather, it helps to regulate it, so that it's not as extreme.
Benefits of Prazosin for different conditions.
PTSD.
Prazosin has been found to be particularly helpful for people with PTSD who experience nightmares or flashbacks. Several studies have shown that prazosin can reduce the frequency and severity of nightmares in people with PTSD. It has also been shown to improve overall sleep quality in this population.
In addition to its effects on sleep, prazosin has also been found to be effective in reducing other symptoms of PTSD, such as hyperarousal and avoidance. One study found that prazosin was more effective than placebo in reducing overall PTSD symptoms.
Anxiety and Panic Disorders.
Prazosin has also been used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. One study found that it was effective in reducing panic attacks in people with panic disorder. Another study found that it was effective in reducing overall anxiety symptoms in people with generalized anxiety disorder.
It's important to note, however, that prazosin is not typically the first-line treatment for anxiety or panic disorders. Other medications, such as benzodiazepines or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are usually tried first.
Dosage and administration of Prazosin
The starting dose of prazosin for PTSD or anxiety is usually 1 mg at bedtime. This dose may be increased gradually over several weeks, depending on how well the medication is tolerated and how effective it is at reducing symptoms.
It's important to take prazosin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor first, as stopping suddenly can cause a rapid increase in blood pressure.
Side effects of Prazosin.
Like all medications, prazosin can cause side effects. The most common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, and drowsiness. These side effects are usually mild and go away as the body adjusts to the medication.

Alpha blockers are a type of blood pressure medication. They lower blood pressure by preventing a hormone called norepinephrine from tightening the muscles in the walls of smaller arteries and veins. As a result, the blood vessels remain open and relaxed. This improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure
Because alpha blockers also relax other muscles throughout the body, these medications also can help improve urine flow in older men with prostate problems.

Examples of alpha blockers
Alpha blockers are either short-acting or long-acting. Short-acting medications work quickly, but their effects last only a few hours. Long-acting medications take longer to work, but their effects last longer. The alpha blocker that's best for you depends on your health and the condition being treated.

Alpha blockers are also called alpha-adrenergic blocking agents, alpha-adrenergic antagonists, adrenergic blocking agents and alpha-blocking agents.

Examples of alpha blockers used to treat high blood pressure include:

Doxazosin (Cardura)
Prazosin (Minipress)
Terazosin
When alpha blockers are used
Alpha blockers typically aren't the first treatment option for high blood pressure. Instead, they're used in combination with other drugs, such as diuretics, when high blood pressure is difficult to control.

In addition to high blood pressure, doctors prescribe alpha blockers to prevent, treat or improve symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia).

Side effects
When you start taking an alpha blocker, you might develop low blood pressure and dizziness, which can make you faint when you rise from a sitting or lying position. As a result, the first dose is often taken at bedtime.

Other side effects might include:

Dizziness
Headache
Pounding heartbeat
Weakness

Ninja Nerds!
In this cardiovascular pharmacology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy presents a high-yield breakdown of Alpha Blockers, focusing on their mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses, and side effect profiles in the treatment of cardiovascular and genitourinary conditions.

We begin by reviewing the role of alpha-adrenergic receptors (α₁ and α₂) in regulating vascular tone and sympathetic outflow. From there, we explore how alpha-1 antagonists—such as prazosin, doxazosin, and terazosin—induce vasodilation by blocking α₁ receptors on vascular smooth muscle, leading to a reduction in systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure.

The lecture also highlights the use of alpha-1 blockers in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by relaxing smooth muscle in the bladder neck and prostate to improve urinary flow. We discuss uroselective agents like tamsulosin, which minimize systemic vascular effects.

We briefly cover nonselective alpha blockers like phenoxybenzamine and phentolamine, commonly used in the management of pheochromocytoma and hypertensive emergencies involving catecholamine excess.

💡Video Key Takeaways
✔️ Prednisone should not be stopped abruptly due to the risk of adrenal insufficiency. A slow, methodical tapering process allows adrenal glands to resume cortisol production.
✔️ The tapering schedule should be personalized based on the duration of prednisone use and the individual's health status. Decrease the dose gradually over days, weeks, or months, depending on the length of use.
✔️ Always discuss tapering plans with a doctor to ensure it's safe and appropriate. Regular communication helps manage expectations and adjust the tapering process as needed.
✔️ Fatigue and other symptoms may occur during tapering but usually stabilize. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult with a doctor to possibly adjust the tapering pace or dose.
✔️ Long-term prednisone use requires monitoring bone and gut health, potentially needing bone density scans and vitamin D checks. Alternate dosing can help manage tapering difficulties.

This content provides information about prednisone, a glucocorticoid that is often mistaken for an anabolic steroid used in bodybuilding. Find out the recommended and alternative drugs to prevent gout attacks

Key Takeaways:
1. Prednisone is a Catabolic Steroid: Unlike anabolic steroids used in bodybuilding, prednisone is a catabolic steroid that breaks down muscle and does not enhance bodybuilding or training abilities.
2. Alternative Medications for Gout: For treating gout, it is important to consider alternative medications such as colchicine, allopurinol, or febuxostat to prevent gout attacks.
3. Exercise Recommendations: While moderate exercise is generally safe during prednisone treatment, extreme activities should be avoided. It is advised to take it easy for three weeks post-treatment to allow the body to recover.
4. Pain Management Options: Exploring other pain management options and discussing alternatives with a healthcare provider is recommended to avoid the negative effects of prednisone on bodybuilding and training.
5. Expert Advice: Dr. Megan, a prednisone pharmacist, provides additional information on gout and prednisone in a dedicated video, offering further insights and guidance.

An overview of venlafaxine (Effexor, Effexor XR) and its active metabolite and FDA-approved medication in its own right, o-desmethylvenlafaxine, or desvenlafaxine (Pristiq). The parent drug differs from its metabolite only in that it is not so quite as potent at blocking the noradrenaline reuptake pump, but both SNRI molecules are more potent at blocking serotonin transporters at all doses (especially lower ones), regardless. Pristiq may also offer more stable plasma levels, due to differences in their pharmacodynamics. Indications, including hot flashes in perimenopause, are reviewed, as are side effects, the sometimes severe discontinuation syndrome, as well as the potential for desvenlafaxine (and therefore, venlafaxine as well) to trigger a false-positive result on immunoassay screening for phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines.
