Attorney Michael Werner of Parker Waichman discusses how one prescription drug is being deemed useless.
In an effort to stop recurring heart attacks and strokes, Plavix was once billed as a great companion to aspirin. However, recent studies have shown that the drug has had no positive effects on patients who use it. And in fact, those who do take the drug are at a much higher risk for bleeding episodes. This is a very important issue for people considering or already taking Plavix and aspirin. Watch this video now to learn more.

You may have heard that potassium is bad for your health, and can cause heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythms or worse. In fact, this is complete misinformation and learning the truth about potassium’s role in human health can change your life for the better. In this video I explain what the research tells us about how much potassium your body needs and how much it can handle. I then put the research to the test and head to the lab to see what happens to my own blood levels of potassium when I take doses even higher than what experts recommend.

I respond to as many comments as I can for the week after I upload. Post your questions and let me answer them for you. Thanks for watching!
Chapters:
00:00 Introduction – After hearing so many people tell me how dangerous it is to take potassium, I decided to put my own body at risk and see what happens when I take up to 4,000 mg of potassium supplement in just one day.
02:13 Research shows that oral potassium supplementation is safe and well tolerated when used for treatment of hypertension. In one study, the side effects for potassium was 11% compared to 8% for placebo, meaning that only an extra 3% of people had side effects.
03:10 In a study of 18 healthy patients, a single dose of 1,600 mg of potassium did not increase blood levels beyond the normal range. Blood levels increased only a fraction of a point and returned to baseline in just a few hours.
03:58 Taking escalating doses of potassium did not increase my blood levels at all as I went from baseline to 2,000 mg, 3,000 mg, and 4,000 mg daily.
07:30 The reason your blood levels don’t rise is that potassium is rapidly absorbed into the cells of your organs, muscles and bones before getting filtered out of the body through the kidneys, where potassium acts to reduce blood pressure by decreasing renin levels and turning off the sodium-chloride cotransporter.
09:20 This information applies to people with healthy kidneys and who are not taking medications that interfere with potassium metabolism. I will cover these special cases in future videos.
10:45 The side effects of potassium supplementation tend to be stomach-related, and occur slightly more frequently than compared to placebo. You can minimize these effects by splitting your dose up or having it with food.

POTASSIUM (K) is a critical electrolyte that works across cell membranes in conjunction with Sodium. It is part of the mechanism that allows for the correct passage of chemicals through the membranes. Most people are deficient in Potassium to some degree. An extreme deficiency is known as Hypokalemia.
Below is a list of typical symptoms of a Potassium deficiency. Note the first six can also be symptoms of a Magnesium deficiency, so it is easy to confuse the two, though in most cases if you are deficient in one you will likely be deficient in the other. One symptom in the list (Oedema, #4) does not occur with a Mg deficiency, so this could help you tell.
1) Anxiety (ie worry; not to be confused with Depression)
2) Insomnia
3) High Blood Pressure
4) Fluid Retention (swollen/puffy ankles and feet, called "oedema")
5) Lower Leg or Foot Cramps (particularly at night)
6) Constipation
7) Arrhythmias (either Heart Palpitations, or a Racing Heart/Tachycardia)
You might not have all of these symptoms, but if you have 4 or 5 of them and are concerned, you should consider the high possibility that this is your issue (which is good news, as it’s easy to fix!) I suffered from ALL SEVEN (in addition to further symptoms of Mg deficiency – see link below to video about MAGNESIUM) but cured all of them quite quickly once I understood my problem.
Reasons for being low in Potassium include:
1) Poor Diet (inadequate Potassium intake due to processed food and too much carbohydrate/sugar)
2) Excessive Alcohol Use (alcohol is a diuretic)
3) Insulin Resistance (pre-diabetes/obesity)
4) Medications that are diuretic
5) Short Term Illness with Vomiting or an Upset Stomach
6) Excessive Sweating (in hot weather or from intense exercise)
7) High water intake with low electrolytes
8) Kidney Disease (kidneys regulate Potassium levels)
9) Stress (the stress hormone Cortisol interferes with the kidneys’ ability to recover Potassium from the urine)
(As most of these problems also affect your Magnesium levels, it is common to be deficient in both)
Foods rich in Potassium:
1) Green leafy vegetables, especially the Brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower) as well as asparagus and spinach.
2) Nuts (especially almonds)
3) Avocados
4) Salmon or other cold water, oily fish
*PLEASE NOTE* blood test results will not tell you your Potassium is low, unless you are critically ill, and need to be hospitalized immediately. Your body controls the serum Potassium (ie blood Potassium) very strictly so the level is always within a “normal” range in a test, but it will not show that Potassium is low in the muscles and tissue fluid. The best way to diagnose this is by noting the symptoms, using some common sense when looking at the possible causes, then addressing it to see if the symptoms improve.
*Do not use a Potassium supplement if you are on any heart medication*, particularly for BP, as many BP meds (like LOSARTAN) are high in Potassium themselves (so you are effectively already supplementing). *DISCUSS SUPPLEMENTING WITH YOUR DOCTOR OR CARDIOLOGIST*.
If you do supplement Potassium, it is advisable to supplement Magnesium at the same time as the deficiency symptoms are similar, and so are the causes. Experiment with levels of supplementation, but it makes sense to start on 400mg per day. If this is not helping after a week, speak to your doctor.

8:38 Learn more about potassium!
Let’s talk about the importance of potassium and what can happen if you don’t get enough.
Your body requires a lot of potassium. The daily requirement for potassium is 4700 mg.
Potassium is important for the sodium-potassium pump. The sodium-potassium pump is like a battery for your cells.
Vegetables are the best source of potassium. One cup of leafy greens provides between 500 and 800 mg of potassium. If you consumed five to ten cups of vegetables daily, you would get plenty of potassium. In comparison, a banana only provides about 300 mg of potassium. Bananas also contain a lot of fructose.
Unfortunately, the average person is not getting enough potassium from their diet—and potassium supplements typically only give you up to 99 mg of potassium per tablet.
Potassium deficiency is often overlooked. It’s difficult to diagnose, and symptoms of a potassium deficiency are sometimes vague. Early symptoms often include difficulty breathing, fatigue, and heart palpitations.
A more severe deficiency in potassium can lead to the following:
• High blood pressure
• Increased risk of stroke
• Fluid retention or edema
• Bone loss
• Kidney stones
Causes of potassium deficiency that go beyond a lack of potassium in the diet can include:
• Penicillin
• Diuretics
• Steroids
• Chronic stress
• High insulin (high-carb diet)
• Refined or processed foods
Even the keto diet and prolonged fasting can lead to a potassium deficiency if not done correctly. You will lose potassium as you lose water weight on keto. Consuming enough potassium on keto and taking a potassium supplement while doing a prolonged fast is crucial.
Eating too much too quickly after a prolonged fast or consuming too many carbs after a prolonged fast can also cause a severe potassium deficiency, which can be dangerous.
My challenge for you is to start consuming a lot of foods high in potassium, like leafy greens, for one week and see how you feel. I think you're going to notice a big difference.

A discussion of the controversies surrounding the RE-LY and ROCKET-AF trials, which led to the initial FDA approvals of dabigatran (Pradaxa) and rivaroxaban (Xarelto) respectively.
Please note that in the years since this video was posted, additional studies have been published which support the use of these drugs. I leave the video up because the issues discussed are still relevant. However, if you are a layperson, please do NOT stop taking your Xarelto or Pradaxa just because you watched this video. Instead, discuss your concerns with your physician. There are more than one alternative anticoagulant out there.
I declare that I have no conflicts of interest, and receive no compensation from the pharmaceutical or device industries.

Doctor Jesse Garcia is interviewed by Drug Error Attorney Matt Hamilton. Dosing errors with Pradaxa after surgery and heart treatments, how errors are made, and how those mistakes can lead to patient death are discussed.
Additional information is detailed at: https://www.law-kc.com/drug-errors/anticoagulants/

This illustrative video provides important information concerning the Pradaxa lawsuit. Sold as an alternative to Coumadin, Pradaxa, also known as Dabigatran, is a blood thinning mediation, commonly used in heart patients with atrial fibrillation. However, the FDA issued a safety communication warning of serious bleeding events and deaths in patients taking Pradaxa through its adverse events reporting system. Unlike Coumadin, also known as Warfarin, there is no known antidote or treatment for the overdosage of Pradaxa, causing a greater risk for adverse health events, including heart attacks and internal bleeding, leading even to death. The Nations Law Firm is a national pharmaceutical litigation firm which is representing clients across the country who are pursuing a legal claim against the Pradaxa manufacturer manufacturer.

Study this Dabigatran & Argatroban NCLEX mnemonic and other mnemonics with Pixorize.
Dabigatran and argatroban are drugs that belong to a class known as the direct thrombin inhibitors. These drugs are blood thinners or anticoagulants used to prevent the formation of blood clots. They are prescribed to people at an increased risk of blood clots, like those with a history of stroke, heart attack, DVT, pulmonary embolism, or atrial fibrillation. Since they prevent blood from clotting, dabigatran and argatroban have the side effect of causing severe bleeding. Finally, these medications should be kept in their original packaging to prevent moisture contamination.
