Humira is known for being a very expensive medication. If you take Humira or another prescription that you can get administered by a healthcare professional you are better off getting it done that way. Some prescriptions like Humira have the option to have it ordered through your Part D drug plan or you can go to a doctor’s office and they’ll administer it for you.

If you do it yourself, you will have to order it through your Part D drug plan, which can be very expensive and put you into the Donut Hole. If you have the option of getting it administered by your doctor through their office, it will be billed as a Medicare Part B service. So, if you have a Medigap or Medicare Supplement plan, Medicare will pay 80% and the supplement will pay the remaining 20%. Humira would be at little to no cost to you.

Hydrea is a chemotherapy medicine most commonly used to treat a cancer of the blood cells called chronic myeloid leukaemia, but is also used to treat cervical cancer and some other blood disorders.

Hydrea capsules contain the active ingredient hydroxycarbamide.

The exact way in which hydroxycarbamide works is unclear, but it appears to interfere with the synthesis of DNA inside cells. It therefore stops cells from growing and multiplying, which stops the growth of cancerous tissue.

Jakafi is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with polycythemia vera who have already taken a medicine called hydroxyurea and it did not work well enough or they could not tolerate it. Jakafi is also used to treat adults with certain types of myelofibrosis.

Jakafi can cause serious side effects including low blood counts and infection. Some people who take Jakafi have developed certain types of non‐melanoma skin cancers. Increases in blood cholesterol levels can also occur. In patients who took another JAK inhibitor to treat rheumatoid arthritis, there was an increased risk of potentially fatal cardiovascular events like heart attack or stroke in patients with risk factors for these events who smoke now or smoked in the past, as well as an increased risk of blood clots in legs or lungs and new (secondary) cancers like lymphoma, especially in patients who smoke now or smoked in the past. The most common side effects of Jakafi for certain types of myelofibrosis and polycythemia vera include: low platelet or red blood cell counts, bruising, dizziness, headache, and diarrhea. Tissue biomarkers for response to anti-TNF therapy across rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease (the TAURUS study)

Anti-TNF therapy is the most commonly used first line biologic medication in inflammatory bowel disease. For every 10 patients that take an anti-TNF medication, only around 6-7 patients benefit from it. At the moment we don’t know why this medication works in some patients but not in others. Advances in technology allow us to look at the role of individual cells in disease in greater detail than ever before. The TAURUS study aims to sample tissue from the bowel in patients receiving adalimumab (also known as Humira) before and after treatment. By doing this we will be able to look at the changes made by this treatment at the most fundamental level. To find out what impact adalimumab has on IBD symptoms and the quality of life of patients, we have also incorporated Truecolours, an online symptom tracking system into the study. By comparing changes to the bowel tissue before and after treatment, we aim to understand the biological pathways that are involved in persistent disease, which can help target new drug treatments. We also plan to look at whether there are clues in the bowel tissue prior to treatment that could tell us whether anti-TNF therapy would be of benefit in certain patients compared to others.
