Understanding the Common Side Effects of Valsartan (sold under the brand name: Diovan, which is registered trademark),
Welcome to our educational video by Dr. Lukasz Kiljanek, a Board Certified Nephrologist, Hypertension Specialist, and Internal Medicine physician.
Valsartan a widely prescribed medication for high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure or kidney disease. While it is highly effective, it's important to be aware of potential side effects. In this video, we'll discuss common side effects.
Cough: Some people might experience a persistent dry cough while taking Valsartan. If you develop a cough, let your healthcare provider know. There are other medications that provide almost the same benefits as Valsartan but may not cause a cough.
Dizziness: Dizziness can happen, especially if your blood pressure lowers too much or if you are dehydrated.
High Potassium level: Valsartan can cause your potassium levels to become high. Your healthcare provider will likely monitor your potassium levels, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Valsartan or increasing the dose of Valsartan to make sure potassium stays within a safe range.
Increased creatinine level: Creatinine level can go up, and this sometimes indicates that the medication is actually working. Blood work will be needed to monitor creatinine levels to ensure it remains within safe ranges, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Valsartan or increasing the dose of Valsartan.
Always notify your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects or have any concerns or questions about your medication. They can provide the best advice and support for your specific situation.

Join us on the latest episode of Talking with Docs as we dive into the intriguing world of shingles, a viral infection that affects millions of people worldwide. In this episode, our esteemed medical experts explore the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for shingles, providing invaluable insights to help you understand and manage this often-painful condition.
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Our doctors discuss how the virus lies dormant within the body after a person recovers from chickenpox and can resurface later in life, leading to the development of shingles. They shed light on the factors that can trigger this reactivation, including age, weakened immune system, stress, and certain medical conditions.
During the episode, our medical experts delve into the telltale signs and symptoms of shingles, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis. They outline the characteristic rash, often accompanied by intense pain, itching, and a tingling sensation. The doctors also touch upon the risk of complications such as postherpetic neuralgia, where pain persists long after the rash has healed, and other potential complications involving the eyes, ears, and nervous system.
In their comprehensive discussion, our doctors explore various treatment approaches for shingles. They shed light on antiviral medications that can help shorten the duration of the illness and reduce the severity of symptoms, as well as the importance of seeking prompt medical attention. Furthermore, they highlight the role of pain management techniques, including over-the-counter and prescription medications, to alleviate discomfort and improve quality of life during the recovery process.
Whether you or a loved one have experienced shingles or simply want to expand your medical knowledge, this episode of "Talking with Docs" offers invaluable information straight from the experts. Join us as we unravel the mystery of shingles, empowering you with the knowledge to recognize, treat, and prevent this common yet often misunderstood condition.

Thinking About Chantix? Watch This First!
Chantix for Quitting Smoking: Does it Really Work?
What Happens When You Take Varenicline?
Chantix Side Effects: Should You Be Worried?
Could Varenicline Be Your Key to Quitting Smoking?
Question: What is Chantix (Varenicline) and how does it help you quit smoking?
Answer: Chantix is a prescription medication used to help adults quit smoking. It works in two ways:
* It partially activates nicotine receptors in the brain, reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
* It also blocks nicotine from fully binding to these receptors, diminishing the pleasurable effects of smoking if you do relapse.
2. Question: How do you typically take Chantix?
Answer: Chantix is usually taken in pill form, twice a day, after meals. The typical course of treatment lasts for 12 weeks. Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose and gradually increase it over the first week to help your body adjust.
3. Question: What are some common side effects of Chantix?
Answer: Some of the most common side effects of Chantix include nausea, headache, trouble sleeping (insomnia), abnormal dreams, and gas. These side effects are usually mild to moderate and often go away over time.
4. Question: Are there any serious side effects associated with Chantix?
Answer: While less common, serious side effects have been reported with Chantix. These can include changes in behavior or thinking, such as agitation, depressed mood, and suicidal thoughts. It's crucial to contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects or if you notice any other unusual changes.
5. Question: Can anyone take Chantix to quit smoking?
Answer: Not necessarily. Chantix is a prescription medication, and your doctor will determine if it's the right choice for you based on your medical history and other medications you may be taking. It's not recommended for everyone, including those with certain pre-existing conditions.
6. Question: Do you still experience nicotine withdrawal symptoms while taking Chantix?
Answer: Chantix is designed to reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and increased appetite. While you may still experience some mild symptoms, they are generally less intense compared to quitting without medication.
7. Question: Can you still smoke while taking Chantix?
Answer: Yes, you can continue to smoke for the first week of treatment while you gradually start taking Chantix. However, you should set a quit date, usually around the second week of treatment, and aim to stop smoking completely by that time. Continuing to smoke after that point reduces the effectiveness of the medication.
8. Question: What happens if you miss a dose of Chantix?
Answer: If you miss a dose of Chantix, you should take it as soon as you remember, unless it's close to the time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double your dose to make up for a missed one.
9. Question: How effective is Chantix for quitting smoking compared to other methods?
Answer: Studies have shown that Chantix can be more effective than placebo or nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in helping people quit smoking. However, the success rate can vary from person to person, and combining Chantix with behavioral support, such as counseling, can further increase your chances of quitting successfully.
10. Question: Are there any medications or substances I should avoid while taking Chantix?
Answer: It's important to tell your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements, as there could be potential interactions with Chantix. While there are no specific foods or beverages you typically need to avoid, it's always best to maintain a healthy lifestyle while trying to quit smoking.

As you know, all medications have side effects and pros and cons. If you read the labels of any medication, you will be completely disturbed by some of the simple medications you've been taking for years and seeing what the side effects could be.
Chantix only came out six years and a few months ago and it got some bad press.
I run several groups and in my groups I've had people take Chantix. So that's where I speak from, that experience. I've never taken it myself.
The experience I've had is some nausea is a side effect. Sometimes people have had diarrhea. Sometimes people have gotten a little lightheaded. Stuff like that.
Very often, the pros of Chantix, which is blocking the receptor, not getting the pleasures of this smoke, not getting the dopamine release and saying, why am I smoking has been a great to my clients. They were able to deal with a little bit of nausea, a little bit of diarrhea, because the pros outweigh the cons tremendously.
I do have one story about a client that was in my group that had taken Chantix. It helped her quit smoking, she was coming to my group. Four weeks into taking the Chantix she got very depressed and she didn't feel like coming out of the house. She followed the instructions that I gave her, that her doctor gave her, which were if that happens, to call her doctor. Also contact me. Let us know what's going on.
She did that. She contacted me. I told her make sure you contact your doctor. Her doctor told her to stop taking it immediately. Within a few days, her depression lifted. She did not pick up a cigarette. She came back into my group. So the Chantix did help her quit smoking and she stayed quit.
That's the only story I have of depression. I know I've read certain things, that people have had severe side effects. But there's a lot of side effects with quitting smoking. They don't last forever and if you get coping skills by going to a group, by going to a counselor, by talking to other people who've quit smoking, they'll help you with these things so that you actually don't experience any thing that harmful.

Champix pills can help you to stop smoking. Here Dr Daniel Atkinson, Clinical Lead at Treated, talks about how the treatment works and how you take it.
A course of Champix usually lasts around 12 weeks and you take a tablet every day. It works by blocking receptors in the brain that make you feel good when you smoke. You start your treatment a few days before your actual quit date. A course usually involves an initial starter pack, followed by a maintenance pack.
The team at Treated can help you get the stop smoking treatment you need. Subscribe, pause or stop whenever it suits you. Choose better.

This video explains some common side effects of venlafaxine extended-release capsules.
Mechanism of Action
The exact mechanism of the antidepressant action of venlafaxine in humans is unknown but is thought to be related to the potentiation of serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system, through inhibition of their reuptake. Non-clinical studies have demonstrated that venlafaxine and its active metabolite, ODV, are potent and selective inhibitors of neuronal serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake and weak inhibitors of dopamine reuptake.
Venlafaxine XL capsules contain the active substance venlafaxine.
Venlafaxine XL is an antidepressant that belongs to a group of medicines called serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This group of medicines is used to treat depression and other conditions such as anxiety disorders. It is thought that people who are depressed and/or anxious have lower levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. It is not fully understood how antidepressants work, but they may help by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Venlafaxine XL is a treatment for adults with depression. It is also a treatment for adults with the following anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (fear or avoidance of social situations), and panic disorder (panic attacks). Treating depression or anxiety disorders properly is important to help you get better. If it is not treated, your condition may not go away and may become more serious and more difficult to treat.
Do not take Venlafaxine XL :
- If you are allergic to venlafaxine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
- If you are also taking, or have taken within the last 14 days, any medicines known as irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), used to treat depression or Parkinson’s disease. Taking an irreversible MAOI together with Venlafaxine XL , can cause serious or even life-threatening side effects. Also, you must wait at least 7 days after you stop taking Venlafaxine XL before you take any MAOI.

Brain zaps are part of what we call medication discontinuation syndrome. Medication discontinuation syndrome are symptoms that you can see when you suddenly stop your medication.
In this case were talking about what you see when you stop the serotonin enhancing antidepressants.
An easy way to remember these symptoms is with the mnemonic FINISH
F - Flulike symptoms.
I - insomnia.
N - nausea or maybe even vomiting.
I - imbalance like dizziness or even vertigo like your head is spinning.
S - sensory disturbances and that would be the electric shocks that seem to be coming from your brain.
H - for hyperarousal and this would be anxiety, irritability, aggression or even jerkiness.

In this video, Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about abuterol (salbutamol) - a medication used to help with asthma.
Other names for albuterol include Accuneb, ProAir Digihaler, ProAir HFA., Proair Respiclick, Proventil, Proventil HFA, ReliOn Ventolin HFA and Ventolin.
What is Albuterol?
Albuterol, also known as salbutamol outside the United States, is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called bronchodilators. It is commonly used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), such as shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing.
How Does Albuterol Work?
Albuterol works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, which helps open up the breathing passages and makes it easier to breathe. It acts on beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the lungs, causing the bronchial muscles to relax and widen the airways.
Common Uses of Albuterol include:
- Asthma: To relieve acute asthma symptoms or prevent exercise-induced asthma.
- COPD: To manage symptoms and improve airflow in chronic conditions like chronic bronchitis or emphysema.
- Preventive Use: Some people use albuterol before exercise or exposure to known triggers to prevent symptoms.
Forms of Albuterol
Albuterol is available in several forms, including:
Inhalers: For quick relief of symptoms.
Nebulizers: For use in a more severe or prolonged asthma attack.
Tablets or Liquid: Less commonly used but available for longer-lasting effects.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Tremors
- Nervousness
- Headache
- Increased heart rate
Important Note
While albuterol is effective in relieving acute symptoms, it is not a substitute for long-term asthma control medications. Always use it as directed by your healthcare provider.
