Olanzapine is an antipsychotic medication used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and children who are at least 13 years old.
Olanzapine is a type of medicine known as an atypical antipsychotic. It works in the brain, where it affects the activity of various chemicals, in particular dopamine and serotonin.
Olanzapine works by blocking the receptors in the brain that dopamine acts on. This prevents the excessive activity of dopamine and in this way helps to control symptoms of schizophrenia and mania.

Review Atypical Antipsychotics (vs Typical Antipsychotics) and their mechanism of action.
Study this Atypical Antipsychotics mnemonic and other NCLEX mnemonics with Pixorize.
Atypical antipsychotics are a drug class used to treat psychosis in schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions, and are also used as mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder. Drugs in this category include clozapine, olanzapine, aripiprazole, risperidone, quetiapine, and ziprasidone. Side effects of these drugs include extrapyramidal symptoms, abbreviated EPS, which refers to a constellation of movement problems, like tremors, muscle spasms, and restlessness. Atypical antipsychotics are also well known for causing metabolic syndrome and weight gain. Other side effects include sedation, anticholinergic effects, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, abbreviated NMS. NMS is a medical emergency characterized by muscle rigidity, fever, confusion, and unstable vitals. Clozapine can cause agranulocytosis, or a rapid fall in white blood cells, and ziprasidone can cause QT prolongation and the abnormal heart rhythm of torsades de pointes.

In this video, I discuss my horrific experience with Olanzapine, an atypical antipsychotic drug I never should have been prescribed (I never presented with psychoses).
Hopefully, you won't have to endure what I endured.
**MEDICAL DISCLAIMER: This video documents my own personal experience with Olanzapine, so it's important to remember that everyone's situation is different, and that viewers should consult with their mental health professional before making any decisions about medication. Nothing in this video is intended to be taken as medical advice**.
0:19 - What is Olanzapine/Zyprexa?
0:22 - What is Olanzapine prescribed for?
0:35 - My dosage.
1:05 - I presented with mood disorders.
1:15 - Why was I prescribed Olanzapine?
1:26 - Damaging side effects.
2:34 - Weight gain.
3:04 - I have medical records documenting all of the side effects.
3:29 - My opinion of Olanzapine.
3:34 - Olanzapine posed some serious risks to my physical health.
4:46 - Have you been prescribed Olanzapine?
4:50 - The 'potential' side effects.
4:55 - My Consultant Psychiatrist.
5:10 - "This is your GP's problem".

5:43 - Withdrawal from Olanzapine.
6:02 - Why did my mental health get worse?
6:14 - Antipsychotic drug withdrawal syndrome.
6:24 - Off Olanzapine for almost a year.

All of the metabolic side effects I experienced:
*[8-11 not mentioned in video]*.
1. Weight gain.
2. Bloating.
3. Elevated cholesterol (8.5 per mmol/L).
4. Fatty liver (steatosis).
5. Libido problems.
6. Acid reflux/heartburn.
7. Severe adverse reactions to alcohol.
8. Waking up with bile and choking.
9. Shortness of breath.
10. Difficulty swallowing.
11. Gagging, after eating too fast.
I also was terrible at managing my finances during my time on Olanzapine - I've never experienced that kind of carelessness otherwise.
{Also to note, after discontinuing Olanzapine, my mental health took a severe downturn, leading to a period of intense suicidality, which lasted for the initial three weeks that followed}.

5 HTP is a common over-the-counter dietary supplement used to increase serotonin levels in the body. Even supplements do have side effects.

🌿 Tryptophan vs 5-HTP: A Naturopathic Doctor’s Perspective
As a naturopathic doctor, I often get asked about tryptophan and 5-HTP. Which one is better and what are the differences? Here’s what you need to know:
👉 Tryptophan is an amino acid found in protein-rich foods like turkey, chicken, and eggs, and is converted into 5-HTP, which is then converted into serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood, sleep, and appetite. Tryptophan can also be converted down a different pathway called the kynurenin pathway, especially in those with higher levels of inflammation. Keep in mind that tryptophan also competes against other amino acids for transport across the blood brain barrier.
👉 5-HTP is a supplement that is a direct precursor to serotonin and can help with depression, anxiety, and insomnia. 5-HTP can readily cross the blood brain barrier without competition from other amino acids. 5-HTP turns into serotonin at a higher rate than tryptophan, so there is a risk of depleting dopamine. This is because the same enzyme is used to convert L-dopa into dopamine that is used to convert 5-HTP into serotonin.
Tryptophan and 5-HTP both have their place, but it depends on the unique needs of the individual and their medical history to determine which one, if any is best.
*It’s always important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements.

S-Adenosyl Methionine, or SAMe is a chemical in our bodies that is involved in pain relief and depression. Normally, people who have higher levels of SAMe have more serotonin (the happiness hormone) and less depressive symptoms.
5-HTP is the natural precursor of serotonin, so people who have higher levels of 5-HTP also naturally have more serotonin and less depressive symptoms.
Both SAMe and 5-HTP supplements have been proven to reduce the symptoms of depression better than a placebo and in some cases they are just as effective as prescription antidepressant drugs.
However, SAMe is known to over excite some people and trigger anxiety, which is not an ideal side effect. 5-HTP doesn't usually have this effect, but it is very short lived in the body. You need slow release 5-HTP to receive any benefits from this supplement.
You can increase your amounts of both SAMe and 5-HTP through your diet, but you need to be eating a wide variety of very healthy foods and avoiding sugary and processed foods.

5-Hydroxytryptophan, more commonly known as 5-HTP, is a naturally occurring compound that plays a crucial role in the body's synthesis of serotonin, a key neurotransmitter. Unlike other substances that influence brain chemistry, 5-HTP is not found in the foods we eat but is produced by the body from the amino acid L-tryptophan. Commercially, 5-HTP supplements are extracted from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. This compound's significance lies in its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, a protective membrane that restricts many substances from entering the brain. Once in the brain, it is directly converted into serotonin.
The primary mechanism of action for 5-HTP is its role as a direct precursor to serotonin. The production of serotonin in the brain is a two-step process, starting with L-tryptophan being converted to 5-HTP, which is then converted to serotonin. By supplementing with 5-HTP, the initial, rate-limiting step of this process is bypassed, leading to a more direct increase in serotonin levels. Serotonin is integral to regulating a wide array of bodily functions and moods, including sleep, appetite, mood, and pain perception. It is this influence on serotonin levels that has led to the investigation and use of 5-HTP for various health concerns.
Due to its ability to elevate serotonin levels, 5-HTP is most commonly used as a dietary supplement to support mood balance, promote sleep, and manage appetite. Research has explored its potential benefits for conditions such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, and fibromyalgia, with some studies suggesting it may be as effective as certain prescription medications. However, it is crucial to approach 5-HTP supplementation with caution. Potential side effects can include nausea, heartburn, and drowsiness. More significantly, combining 5-HTP with other medications that increase serotonin, such as antidepressants (SSRIs and MAOIs), can lead to a dangerous condition known as serotonin syndrome, characterized by a rapid heart rate, agitation, and confusion. Therefore, consulting with a healthcare professional before starting 5-HTP is essential to ensure its safe and appropriate use.

How Long Is Abiraterone Treatment? In this informative video, we will discuss the treatment duration of abiraterone, a medication used in the management of prostate cancer. We will cover how the length of treatment can vary significantly among patients, influenced by factors such as disease stage, response to the medication, and any side effects experienced. Understanding these elements is vital for patients and their families as they navigate treatment options.
We will also explore how clinical trials often report longer treatment durations compared to typical clinical practice. This difference is due to the strict protocols followed in trials, which may not reflect real-world scenarios. Additionally, we will touch on the importance of monitoring side effects and how they can impact the continuation of treatment.
Combining abiraterone with other medications, like prednisone, can play a role in managing side effects and enhancing treatment effectiveness. Throughout the video, we will emphasize the importance of personalized treatment plans developed in collaboration with healthcare providers.
