What is Captopril? What is Captopril used for?

Captopril, marketed under the name Capoten®, stands as a pivotal medication in the battle against high blood pressure.

Classified as an ACE inhibitor, it operates by dilating blood vessels to manage blood pressure effectively. Elevated blood pressure can inflict damage on the kidneys and escalate the risk of experiencing a stroke or heart failure. Captopril is dispensed in two forms: a 25-mg tablet and a 1 mg/mL oral liquid, both administered orally.

Potential Side Effects of Captopril:

Dizziness or feeling light-headed, potentially leading to fainting
Persistent cough
Hypotension (low blood pressure)
Reduced kidney function and diminished urine output
Fatigue
Lowered blood counts, increasing susceptibility to infections, bleeding, and anemia
Elevated potassium levels in the blood
Headaches
Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
Breathing difficulties or swallowing issues
Hoarseness or throat tightening
Swelling in the legs or ankles
Skin rash

These side effects are among the most commonly reported, but others may occur. It's crucial to communicate any adverse effects to your healthcare provider.
Important Guidelines for Captopril Use:

Should you experience swelling in the face, lips, or tongue, hoarseness, or tightness in the throat, or if you encounter difficulties in swallowing or breathing, discontinue captopril immediately and inform your doctor.

Captopril may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Until you are aware of its effects on you, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery. Prevent dizzy or fainting spells by rising slowly from sitting or lying positions.

Frequent blood pressure monitoring is advised while on captopril, with adjustments to dosage made as necessary based on your readings. Sudden episodes of severe diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating should be reported to your doctor promptly due to the potential for blood pressure drops.

Captopril's interaction with certain medications can alter its effectiveness. This includes ibuprofen, naproxen, heparin, lithium, potassium salts, and some diuretics. Always inform your healthcare provider about any current or new medications.

Avoid salt substitutes, potassium supplements, and potassium-rich foods during captopril therapy. Additionally, consult your doctor before self-medicating for symptoms like coughs, colds, or pain.

If captopril is prescribed in liquid form, ensure to shake the suspension well before use and keep it refrigerated. Always adhere to the expiration date, discarding any unused medication thereafter.

This comprehensive guide aims to enhance understanding and safe usage of captopril, a key medication in managing high blood pressure, thereby mitigating associated health risks.

Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication FDA approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and mixed bipolar episodes in adults or used off-label for children over the age of 12.

It is also used for episodes of acute mania, depression disorders in adults and in children 10 years old and up. It is often used as an augmenter with antidepressant medications for treating depressive disorders.

There are several off-label uses for Seroquel which are being explored but remain outside of FDA approval, such as for insomnia, the treatment of dementia, addiction, delirium, and personality disorders.

At present, these off-label uses are being cautiously examined due to a lack of established dosing parameters and their effects on metabolic side effects, extrapyramidal adverse effects and potential safety concerns.

Seroquel (Quetiapine) Withdrawal Symptoms
As is the case for most prescription psychoactive medications, using them for some extended period of time, i.e. several months or longer may lead to physical dependence. If the decision to come off the drug is made, stopping should never be done abruptly. Always seek medical oversight and guidance for safety.

Even when slowing the tapering off a drug, there can still be some significant withdrawals, which may be more severe if the prescription was for a very long time, such as years.

When withdrawing from Seroquel, the following symptoms may occur:

Suicidal ideation or behavior
Seroquel Withdrawal Psychosis
Mania
Insomnia
Hypersensitivity to light, sound, temperature, all sensory perceptions
Vomiting
Headaches
Racing heart, tachycardia
Unusual mood swings, can change rapidly
Slowed heartbeat
Nausea

Lorazepam Mechanism and Side Effects
Lorazepam Mechanism and Side Effects Side Effects 7 Views • 5 months ago

Lorazepam is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines are a group of psychoactive drugs that have a depressant effect on the central nervous system, leading to sedation, muscle relaxation, and anxiety reduction. Lorazepam is commonly prescribed for the short-term treatment of anxiety disorders, as well as for managing symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, insomnia, and certain types of seizures.

Key points about lorazepam include:

1. Anxiolytic Effects: Lorazepam is primarily used as an anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) medication. It works by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA inhibits the activity of nerve cells, leading to a calming and sedative effect.

2. Dosage Forms: Lorazepam is available in various forms, including tablets, oral solutions, and injectable solutions. The injectable form is often used in hospital settings to manage acute anxiety or agitation.

3. Short-Term Use: Due to the risk of tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms, lorazepam is usually prescribed for short-term use, typically not exceeding a few weeks. Prolonged or excessive use can lead to physical and psychological dependence.

4. Withdrawal: Abruptly stopping lorazepam after regular use can lead to withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, muscle tension, and in severe cases, seizures. Tapering off the medication under medical supervision is usually recommended to avoid withdrawal complications.

5. Side Effects: Common side effects of lorazepam include drowsiness, dizziness, muscle weakness, and impaired coordination. Less common side effects may include memory problems, confusion, and changes in mood.

6. Precautions: Lorazepam should be used with caution in individuals with a history of substance abuse, as well as those with a history of depression or other mental health disorders. It's important to inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, as lorazepam can interact with other drugs and substances, including alcohol.

7. Elderly and Special Populations: The effects of lorazepam can be more pronounced in the elderly population, leading to increased sedation and risk of falls. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for older adults. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare providers before taking lorazepam, as it can potentially affect the developing fetus or infant.

8. Medical Supervision: Lorazepam should be taken under the supervision of a medical professional who can monitor its effects, adjust the dosage, and guide the discontinuation process when necessary.

It's important to note that lorazepam and other benzodiazepines are not recommended for long-term use due to the potential for dependence and other adverse effects. If you have concerns about anxiety or any other medical condition, it's advisable to consult a healthcare provider who can recommend appropriate treatment options based on your individual needs.

The Truth Behind Ozempic Face (Wegovy) | Doctor Explains
The Truth Behind Ozempic Face (Wegovy) | Doctor Explains Side Effects 7 Views • 5 months ago

In this video, I will share with you the science behind these “new miracle drugs” - Ozempic and Wegovy and whether you can get an unusual appearence called 'Ozempic Face'. These are both a drug called semaglutide, and work by mimicking the effects of a hormone called (GLP-1) in the body, which helps to regulate blood sugar levels and aids in weight loss.

Ozempic was given to Diabetes patients, and after reports of considerable weight loss, the same laboratory created Wegovy, the same medication but a version made for non-diabetes to lose weight. People taking Ozempic/ Wegovy have reported these Unusual symptoms:

- A hollowed-out appearance on their face
- More wrinkles and lines across, making them look older
- Loose and saggy skin

And we hear all over the media the so-called “ozempic face”. However, its more of a side effect of losing weight quickly, here is why...

When we lose weight, we start to lose the stores of fat around the body (the classic belly fat), but we also lose fat around organs and across our face. If the weight loss occurs very quickly, our skin may not have enough time to adjust to the changes in our body, causing loose, sagging skin, especially in areas where there was a lot of fat or muscle mass before the weight loss. This would occur to anyone going to a sudden loss of weight and is not linked to a specific side effect of a drug.

Wellbutrin (Buproprion) and Adult ADHD -A Non-Stimulant Option. Mechanism of action and side effects
Wellbutrin (Buproprion) and Adult ADHD -A Non-Stimulant Option. Mechanism of action and side effects Side Effects 7 Views • 5 months ago

Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses Wellbutrin (Buproprion) and its off-label use in the treatment of Adult ADHD. Wellbutrin (buproprion) is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which is FDA approved for the treatment of depression. Unlike antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs, this medication does NOT increase availability of serotonin, and therefore, does NOT treat anxiety (in fact, it can make anxiety and irritability worse). It is also used for smoking cessation (with the Trade name Zyban). Other side effects include increased risk for seizure (making it a non-ideal option for individuals with eating disorders or alcohol use disorders [as it can be dangerous for these individuals]), increased intra-ocular pressure, dry mouth, constipation, tachycardia, sweating, insomnia, upset stomach, decreased appetite (and weight loss) and others. With that said, this may be a good option for some patients, particularly as it does not have the abuse potential, of stimulants like adderall, ritalin, vyvanse and concerta.

Dr. Pagnani is the founder and medical director of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates, an Instructor at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for the Department of Psychiatry, he supervises psychiatric residents at Jefferson Hospital, he serves on the Young Professional Board of Uplift, the Center for Grieving Children and he maintains a private practice of Psychiatry in Philadelphia where he sees patients for one-time psychiatric evaluations and second opinions. He is a licensed physician and surgeon in NJ, PA, NY, MD, DE, FL and CA and can provide consultations to individuals via HIPAA compliant Telehealth visits living in these locations.

Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates is a private practice of psychiatry consisting of about 25 psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychotherapists with physical locations in Philadelphia and Paoli, PA and serving all of PA, NJ, NY and FL virtually via HIPAA compliant tele-psychiatry. Individuals seeking not only evaluations but long-term psychiatric care, can contact Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates directly.

These videos aim to increase awareness and discussion of mental health topics and to encourage struggling individuals to schedule an appointment directly with a mental health provider. Mental health needs to be normalized, and simply speaking about mental health topics openly, is an important first step.

Dr. Pagnani and Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates are NOT advocating for or against the use of any mentioned psychiatric medications for any specific individual. Additionally, any side effects mentioned are not a complete list of potential side effects or contraindications to taking any mentioned medications, and all risks and benefits of a medication should be discussed with an individual’s provider at an appointment, before starting, stopping or making changes to a medication regimen.

Help Reduce Risk of Serious RSV Lung Infection for Your Baby
Help Reduce Risk of Serious RSV Lung Infection for Your Baby Side Effects 6 Views • 4 months ago

Did you know while hospitalization is uncommon, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of hospitalization for babies under 1? RSV season is typically fall – spring but can vary by local areas and today I'm sharing about a preventative antibody which can help protect against severe RSV lung infections. I'm joined by Shawn Johnson East and Dr. Natalie Barnett, Vice President of Clinical Research at Nanit, to discuss the importance of RSV protection for babies. They share personal experiences, including Shawn's family's journey with RSV, and offer expert insights on how parents can help protect their little ones during RSV season.

They join me to discuss:

• How RSV is common and can be a serious virus for infants.
• Beyfortus (nirsevimab-alip) 50mg and 100mg Injection, a preventative antibody that helps give babies an extra layer of protection against severe RSV lung infection for babies under age 1 born during or entering their first RSV season and certain kids up to 24 months. Your child should not take Beyfortus if your child has a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab-alip or any of the ingredients in Beyfortus. Beyfortus may not protect all children.
• That parenting can be scary but navigating the journey with monitors like Nanit, and knowledge of prevention measures for RSV can be empowering.

INDICATION
Beyfortus is a prescription medicine used to help prevent a serious lung disease caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in:
• Newborns and babies under 1 year of age born during or entering their first RSV season.
• Children up to 24 months of age who remain at risk of severe RSV disease through their second RSV season.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Your child should not take Beyfortus if your child has a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab-alip or any of the ingredients in Beyfortus.

Before your child receives Beyfortus, tell your healthcare provider about all of your child’s medical conditions, including if your child:
• has ever had a reaction to Beyfortus.
• has bleeding or bruising problems. If your child has a problem with bleeding or bruises easily, an injection could cause a problem.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines your child takes, including prescription and over-the- counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Your infant should not receive a medicine called palivizumab if they have already received Beyfortus in the same RSV season.

Serious allergic reactions have happened with Beyfortus. Get medical help right away if your child has any of the following signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:
• swelling of the face, mouth, or tongue
• difficulty swallowing or breathing
• unresponsiveness
• bluish color of skin, lips, or under fingernails
• muscle weakness
• severe rash, hives, or itching

The most common side effects of Beyfortus include rash and pain, swelling, or hardness at the site of your child’s injection. These are not all the possible side effects of Beyfortus. Call your healthcare provider if you have questions about side effects.

Ondansetron Injection: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects & Important Advice | MediInsights
Ondansetron Injection: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects & Important Advice | MediInsights Side Effects 6 Views • 4 months ago

Welcome to MediInsights, where we are committed to "Unlocking The Wonders of Wellness." In today's video, we will explore Ondansetron Injection, a vital medication widely used in the medical field. Let's delve into its uses, dosage, mechanism of action, side effects, and important advice for its safe use.

What is Ondansetron Injection?

Ondansetron injection is a medication primarily used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical procedures. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists.

Uses of Ondansetron Injection:

Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting: Ondansetron is highly effective in preventing nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting: It is also used to manage nausea and vomiting associated with radiation therapy.
Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting: Ondansetron is administered before surgery to prevent nausea and vomiting that can occur postoperatively.
Dosage of Ondansetron Injection:

The dosage of ondansetron injection can vary:

For chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: The typical adult dose is 8 mg IV over 15 minutes, given 30 minutes before chemotherapy, followed by two more doses at four-hour intervals.
For postoperative nausea and vomiting: A single dose of 4 mg IV is given before the induction of anesthesia.
Mechanism of Action:

Ondansetron works by blocking serotonin 5-HT3 receptors in the brain and gastrointestinal tract. Serotonin is a natural substance that can cause nausea and vomiting by binding to these receptors. By inhibiting this action, ondansetron effectively prevents these symptoms.

Side Effects of Ondansetron Injection:

While ondansetron is generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects:

Common Side Effects: Headache, dizziness, and constipation.
Serious Side Effects: Severe allergic reactions, changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation), and low blood pressure. Monitoring during administration is crucial to detect these adverse effects early.
Important Advice for Using Ondansetron Injection:

Follow Prescribed Dosage: Always adhere to the dosage and administration instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
Inform Your Doctor: Disclose any allergies, especially to ondansetron or similar medications.
Drug Interactions: Notify your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking, as ondansetron can interact with drugs affecting heart rhythm.
Use During Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use ondansetron only if clearly necessary and under medical supervision.
Monitor for Side Effects: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious side effects.

Going off the Pill Experience | YAZ : Physical & Emotional Symptoms / Helpful resources / FAQs
Going off the Pill Experience | YAZ : Physical & Emotional Symptoms / Helpful resources / FAQs Side Effects 6 Views • 4 months ago

In this video I discuss, in detail, my experience going off the pill. I was on Yaz for 6 years and have been off for over 3 years now. I went on Yaz as a contraceptive at the age of 21. Now, 29, I reflect back on my contraceptive pill journey and share information I wish I had had earlier. This video starts with some relevant background information and why I went off the pill. What was the final straw that led to me taking the plunge with little to no preparation? In between I detail a few things I wish I had done and things I did do that were helpful along the way, and towards the end of the video I complete these lists.
I share all the physical things I experienced that I can think of - including swollen boobs, bloating, acne, period pains and my general PMS. I then move on to the emotional things I experienced that came as a big surprise. I also share some things I did that that I think were helpful, including yoga, general health things, stress management and more. Finally I share some helpful resources (that helped me a lot), some concluding remarks and then a final physical / emotional thing I forgot to share at the beginning of the video.
