Pioglitazone, sold under the brand name Actos among others, is an anti-diabetic medication used to treat type 2 diabetes.[2] It may be used with metformin, a sulfonylurea, or insulin.[2][3] Use is recommended together with exercise and diet.[3] It is not recommended in type 1 diabetes.[3] It is taken by mouth.[3]

Common side effects include headaches, muscle pains, inflammation of the throat, and swelling.[3] Serious side effects may include bladder cancer, low blood sugar, heart failure, and osteoporosis.[3][2] Use is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding.[2] It is in the thiazolidinedione (TZD) class and works by improving sensitivity of tissues to insulin.[2]

Pioglitazone was patented in 1985, and came into medical use in 1999.[4] It is available as a generic medication.[2] In 2019, it was the 179th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 3 million prescriptions.[5][6] It was withdrawn in France and Germany in 2011.[7][8][9] Pioglitazone is used to lower blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes either alone or in combination with a sulfonylurea, metformin, or insulin.[1] The effects of Plioglitazone have been compared in a Cochrane systematic review to that of other blood sugar lowering-medicine, including metformin, acarbose, and repaglinide, as well as with appropriate diet and exercise, not showing any benefit in reducing the chance of developing type 2 diabetes in people at risk.[10] It did, however, show reduction of risk of developing type 2 diabetes when compared to a placebo or to no treatment.[10] These results should be interpreted considering that most of the data of the studies included in this review were of low or very-low certainty.

While pioglitazone does decrease blood sugar levels, the main study that looked at the medication found no difference in the main cardiovascular outcomes that were looked at.[11] The secondary outcome of death from all causes, myocardial infarction, and stroke were lower.[11]

Pioglitazone has been found to reduce all-cause mortality in type 2 diabetic patients compared to other therapies, with a 60% reduction in mortality in those exposed to pioglitazone, compared to those never exposed.[12] Another study found an all-cause mortality hazard ratio of 0.33 for pioglitazone after adjusting for 40 covariates, compared to insulin.[13] Due to insufficient data on all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction and stroke, this was not possible to compare in a more recent review.[10]

06:47 What Are The Psyllium Husk Side Effect?

Is psyllium husk a good supplement for your specific needs, or is it just a waste of money?

What Is Psyllium Husk?
Psyllium husk is a soluble fiber commonly consumed as a dietary supplement in powder or capsule form.

Due to its high fiber content, psyllium husk aids in digestion, supports heart health, and promotes satiety. Psyllium husk is also a prebiotic, which is needed to help grow healthy probiotics in the gut.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Psyllium Husk?
Psyllium husk offers numerous health benefits, including:
► Improved digestion
► Regulation of bowel movements
► Reduced cholesterol levels
► Stabilized blood sugar levels
► Its high fiber content promotes a healthy gut microbiome and supports weight loss goals by increasing feelings of fullness and reducing appetite.

Is Psyllium Husk Good For Constipation?
Psyllium husk is an excellent natural remedy for relieving constipation. Its soluble fiber content adds bulk to stool, making it easier to pass.

Does Psyllium Husk Lower Cholesterol And Blood Pressure?
Including psyllium husk in your diet, along with a healthy lifestyle, has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels, which is the “bad” cholesterol.

Studies show the binding process promotes the excretion of cholesterol, leading to reduced total and LDL blood cholesterol levels.

Even though scientific studies support its effectiveness, and the FDA recognizes psyllium husk as a heart-healthy ingredient, it’s essential to incorporate it into a balanced diet and active lifestyle for optimal results.

Psyllium husk may also help contribute to heart health by supporting healthy blood pressure levels.

Does Psyllium Husk Help Weight Loss?
Psyllium husk can support weight loss by promoting feelings of fullness and reducing appetite. Its high fiber content absorbs water in the digestive tract, expanding and making you feel fuller for longer.

By feeling full throughout the day, it can help you get into the required calorie deficit to lose weight, since it can help prevent overeating, thus helping you eating less calories throughout the day.

Additionally, this studies show psyllium husk also assist in regulating blood sugar levels, which makes it beneficial for individuals with diabetes, as well as for people looking to lose weight.

Based on the research, it appears that psyllium husk has the potential to help:
► Improve digestive health by easing constipation to support regular bowel movements.
► Manage cholesterol levels.
► Support healthy blood pressure levels.
► Regulate and stabilize blood sugar levels.
► Increase weight loss, when combined with a healthy lifestyle.

Amazing Benefits Of Magnesium Glycinate |The Best Magnesium Supplement |Magnesium Glycinate
Amazing Benefits Of Magnesium Glycinate |The Best Magnesium Supplement |Magnesium Glycinate Side Effects 9 Views • 6 months ago

Magnesium is the fourth most common mineral in the human body.
Normal magnesium content in a healthy adult is around 25 grams, most of which is found in bone tissue.
Magnesium acts as a co-factor for more than 300 enzyme systems necessary for many important functions, including protein synthesis, muscle contraction, nerve conduction, blood glucose control, hormone function, blood pressure regulation, heart function etc.
Magnesium glycinate is a type of magnesium supplement made by combining magnesium with the amino acid glycine.
In addition, several other forms of magnesium supplements are available on the market.
Some of them include magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate, magnesium hydroxide, and magnesium carbonate.
Unlike those forms of magnesium supplements, magnesium glycinate is well absorbed into the body.
Additionally, it does not cause gastric disturbances such as diarrhea associated with other forms of magnesium supplements.
Magnesium glycinate is helpful for relieving anxiety, improving sleep quality, and maintaining a healthy blood pressure.
Additional health benefits of magnesium glycinate include the following.
Reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes by increasing insulin sensitivity.
Maintaining a regular heart rhythm.
Regulation of calcium in the body, which is helpful for better bone health.
Prevention of kidney stone formation.
And amplification of exercise performance.
Moreover, magnesium glycinate has also been shown to be helpful in patients with migraine headache.
The best time to take magnesium glycinate is just before bed, because it helps you sleep better.
It is best to take the supplement with addition of vitamin D and B6 for better absorption.

What are warts (HPV)? - 3D animation Side Effects 9 Views • 7 months ago

This 3D animation was developed to provide an educational overview about warts. Warts are benign (not cancerous) skin growths that appear when a virus infects the top layer of the skin. Viruses that cause warts are called human papillomavirus (HPV), and different strains may cause them in different parts of the body. Warts can spread from one location on the body to another as well as from person to person by contact with the wart. Factors that increase the risk include use of public showers, working with meat, eczema and a weak immune system.

The inhaler contains a combination of 3 medicines fluticasone, umeclidinium, and vilanterol.

Fluticasone is a steroid that prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Umeclidinium is an anticholinergic. Vilanterol is a long-acting bronchodilator.

These medications work by relaxing muscles in the airways to improve breathing.

This inhaler is not for use in treating an asthma attack or bronchospasm attack.

Vilanterol, when used alone, may increase the risk of death in people with asthma. However, this risk is not increased when vilanterol is used in a combination product with fluticasone and umeclidinium.

Common side effects may include cold or flu symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, chest tightness, a lung infection, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, joint pain, headache, back pain, mouth sores, hoarse voice, mouth pain, changes in your sense of taste.

Enalapril (Vasotec) - Uses, Dosage, Side Effects - Doctor Explains
Enalapril (Vasotec) - Uses, Dosage, Side Effects - Doctor Explains Side Effects 9 Views • 7 months ago

In this video we will cover everything you need to know about Enalapril. We will discuss how and when to use it, we will cover its side effects, dosage and much, much more.

You can find more useful videos on cardiovascular diseases and their treatments here:
https://www.youtube.com/playli....st?list=PLaG3Bo3L0gX

Generic name: Enalapril.
Brand names: Vasotec en Renitec.
Available as a tablet en oral suspension.

How to use it?
- Tablet: Just swallow it with half a glass of water.
- Oral suspension: measure the precise amount you need to take with measuring cup. Take this amount. Afterwards rinse the cup with some water and drink this water as well.

When to use it?
Enalapril is part of a group of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. These drugs widen the blood vessels, thus lowering the blood pressure and lowering the straint on the heart.
Therefore Enalapril can be used to treat; a high blood pressure and heart failure.

What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- However, when treating a high blood pressure in adults, most doctors will start with an initial dose of 5-20mg 1x/day. Which if necessary can be slowly increased up to a max. dose of 40 mg/day.
- When treating heart failure, the initial dose is much lower, and needs to be build up over a longer time. Ultimately the maintenance dose will be about the same; 20mg 1x/day, up to a maximum dose of 20mg 2x/day.

What are the side-effects?
- Very common (10%): Dizziness, blurred vision, cough and nausea.
- Common (1-10%): Low blood pressure, fainting, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash, itching, swelling in the face or throat, headache, fatigue and depression.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): Palpitations, heart attack, cerebral haemorrhage, drowsiness, insomnia, dizziness, confusion, sore throat, hoarseness, asthma, dry mouth, decreased hunger, vomiting, constipation, inflammation of the pancreas, impaired kidney function, muscle cramps, tinnitus, fever, hair loss, rash and erectile dysfunction.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): Several serious adverse reactions.

Safety:
- The first days of using Enalapril it can lead to dizziness or fatigue. Please do not drive while experiencing this.
- Furthermore, alcohol widens the blood vessels. It can therefore increase the side effect of dizziness at the beginning of treatment. Try drinking alcohol in moderation first so you can estimate its effects.
- Enalapril can also have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
- Lastly, Enalapril could be dangerous for pregnant women, but often be used safely by women who are breastfeeding. To be sure, always discuss this with your personal doctor.

Pharmacology of Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) ; Mechanism of Action, Pharmacokinetics, Uses, Effects
Pharmacology of Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) ; Mechanism of Action, Pharmacokinetics, Uses, Effects Side Effects 9 Views • 7 months ago

Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative used to treat constipation and for bowel preparation before medical procedures. Here are some key points about its pharmacology:

Mechanism of Action
Stimulant Laxative: Bisacodyl acts directly on the colonic mucosa, stimulating sensory nerve endings in the walls of the intestine and rectum. This induces parasympathetic reflexes, resulting in increased peristaltic contractions of the colon and promoting defecation.

Water and Electrolyte Secretion: It increases the secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen, which helps soften the stool and facilitates bowel movements.

Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Approximately 5% of bisacodyl is absorbed after oral administration.

Distribution: It is distributed locally in the intestines.

Metabolism: Bisacodyl is hydrolyzed by intestinal enzymes and bacteria in the bowel to its active desacetyl forms.

Excretion: The drug is primarily excreted in the stool, with a small amount excreted in the urine.

Onset of Action: The onset of action varies depending on the form of administration:

Oral tablets: 6-12 hours

Suppositories: 15-60 minutes

Enema: 5-20 minutes

Clinical Uses
Constipation: Bisacodyl is used to relieve occasional constipation.

Bowel Preparation: It is used for bowel evacuation prior to radiological examinations and surgical procedures.

Side Effects
Common side effects of bisacodyl include:

Abdominal discomfort

Abdominal cramps

Diarrhea

Rectal irritation

Precautions
Contraindications: Bisacodyl should not be used in individuals with hypersensitivity to the drug, intestinal obstruction, severe dehydration, or acute surgical abdominal conditions.

Special Precautions: Use with caution in patients with nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. Prolonged use can lead to dependence.

Bisacodyl is a valuable medication for managing constipation and preparing patients for gastrointestinal procedures, offering effective relief with a well-defined mechanism of action and pharmacokinetic profile.

Bone Fracture. Risks of PPIs for Acid Reflux/GERD/Heartburn and bones.

Dr. Waks discuses the FDA communication that links fracture risks to proton pumps inhibitors. Proton Pump Inhibitors are the drugs commonly used to relieve Acid reflux, Heartburn or GERD.
proton pump inhibitors side effects: decreased calcium absorption and fragile bones, osteoporosis.
"There are limited studies on the effects of PPIs on bone health in the younger populations. As peak bone mass is an important determinant of bone health, it is important to know whether PPI use will affect peak bone mass attainment and osteoporosis risk later in adulthood."

Long-term PPI therapy is reported to be associated with decreased bone mineral density (BMD). Reduction in BMD and deterioration of bone microstructure are characteristics of osteoporosis, a metabolic bone disease. Osteoporosis ultimately leads to decreased bone strength and susceptibility to fracture. Osteoporotic fracture is becoming a major health concern in the rapidly aging society, owing to the tremendous economic burden, mortality, and morbidity associated with it. In fact, hip fracture is considered as the most common cause of elevated mortality and dependency in elderly patients.

Some examples of proton pump inhibitors:

Omeprazole (OTC; brand names: Gasec, Losec, Prilosec, Zegerid, Lomac, Omepral, Omez, Omepep, UlcerGard, GastroGard)

Lansoprazole (brand names: Prevacid, Zoton, Monolitum, Inhibitol, Levant, Lupizole)

Dexlansoprazole (brand name: Kapidex, Dexilant)

Esomeprazole (brand names: Nexium, Esotrex, esso)

Pantoprazole (brand names: Protonix, Somac, Pantoloc, Pantozol,

Pantomed, Zurcal, Zentro, Pan, Controloc, Tecta)

Rabeprazole (brand names: AcipHex, Pariet, Erraz, Zechin,

Rabecid, Nzole-D, Rabeloc, Razo. Dorafem: combination with domperidone[citation needed]).

Ilaprazole (not FDA approved as of October 2013; brand names: Noltec, Yili'an, Ilapro, Lupilla, Adiza)

Summary:
1. May interfere with other medication
Do you take over the counter or prescription medication with dietary supplements? You may be putting yourself at risk! For some people, these supplements increase the effectiveness of other medication, on the other hand it may decrease it as well.

2. Acne
Biotin is known for adding volume to hair and making nails strong, but is acne the price you really want to pay? The body absorbs biotin the same way it absorbs other vitamins and minerals - through the gastro system. This is also the system that absorbs acne causing agents present in the skin. But, in case of biotin overload, this absorption gets interrupted. In the end, this results in less acne fighting vitamins and of course, the return of the dreaded acne! If you are taking biotin regularly and notice some acne, especially along your chin and jawline, then biotin may be doing more than beautifying your hair.

3. Skin rash
This just keeps getting worse! If you thought that acne was horrible then let me tell you, the skin problems related to biotin don't stop there. Skin rash is a common side effect of too much biotin in your system.

4. Upset stomach
The moment you feel like your stomach health is being compromised, stop! Unhealthy gut health is a breeding ground for several diseases and a weakened immune system. Basically, a happy gut is the secret to a happy life.

An Unusual Side Effect of Acyclovir: Junctional Rhythm-Poonam Patel
An Unusual Side Effect of Acyclovir: Junctional Rhythm-Poonam Patel Side Effects 9 Views • 7 months ago

Co-Authors: Vagharsh Antanesian, MD MPH, Internal Medicine, PGY 3,Norton Community Hospital Norton, VA

Introduction: Acyclovir, an antiviral agent primarily targeting Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infections, presents predominantly mild adverse effects such as malaise (10%), gastrointestinal symptoms, and elevated liver function tests (1-10%). However, more severe complications, notably associated with intravenous administration, encompass rare occurrences of acute renal failure, neurological toxicity, and sporadic cases of bradycardia. A review of literature revealed 2 instances linking acyclovir to bradycardia, with no documented reports on junctional rhythm. A phase IV clinical study examining FDA data identified 1,424 individuals encountering side effects from Acyclovir, with only 6 individuals (0.42%) reporting bradycardia, primarily observed in males aged 60 and above using the medication for less than a month. Here we report a rare case of junctional rhythm caused by acyclovir.

Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication FDA approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and mixed bipolar episodes in adults or used off-label for children over the age of 12.

It is also used for episodes of acute mania, depression disorders in adults and in children 10 years old and up. It is often used as an augmenter with antidepressant medications for treating depressive disorders.

There are several off-label uses for Seroquel which are being explored but remain outside of FDA approval, such as for insomnia, the treatment of dementia, addiction, delirium, and personality disorders.

At present, these off-label uses are being cautiously examined due to a lack of established dosing parameters and their effects on metabolic side effects, extrapyramidal adverse effects and potential safety concerns.

Seroquel (Quetiapine) Withdrawal Symptoms
As is the case for most prescription psychoactive medications, using them for some extended period of time, i.e. several months or longer may lead to physical dependence. If the decision to come off the drug is made, stopping should never be done abruptly. Always seek medical oversight and guidance for safety.

Even when slowing the tapering off a drug, there can still be some significant withdrawals, which may be more severe if the prescription was for a very long time, such as years.

When withdrawing from Seroquel, the following symptoms may occur:

Suicidal ideation or behavior
Seroquel Withdrawal Psychosis
Mania
Insomnia
Hypersensitivity to light, sound, temperature, all sensory perceptions
Vomiting
Headaches
Racing heart, tachycardia
Unusual mood swings, can change rapidly
Slowed heartbeat
Nausea
Dizziness
Anxiety
Agitation
Loss of concentration, can’t focus
Depression

Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness. It might cause you to sweat, feel restless and tense, and have a rapid heartbeat. It can be a normal reaction to stress. For example, you might feel anxious when faced with a difficult problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision

Anxiety can be normal in stressful situations such as public speaking or taking a test. Anxiety is only an indicator of underlying disease when feelings become excessive, all-consuming, and interfere with daily living.

Some ways to manage anxiety disorders include learning about anxiety, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, correct breathing techniques, dietary adjustments, exercise, learning to be assertive, building self-esteem, cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, structured problem solving, medication and support groups.
