Dangerous Side Effects

Understanding the Common Side Effects of Telmisartan (sold under the brand name: Micardis, which is registered trademark),
Welcome to our educational video by Dr. Lukasz Kiljanek, a Board Certified Nephrologist, Hypertension Specialist, and Internal Medicine physician.
Telmisartan a widely prescribed medication for high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure or kidney disease. While it is highly effective, it's important to be aware of potential side effects. In this video, we'll discuss common side effects.
Cough: Some people might experience a persistent dry cough while taking Telmisartan. If you develop a cough, let your healthcare provider know. There are other medications that provide almost the same benefits as Telmisartan but may not cause a cough.
Dizziness: Dizziness can happen, especially if your blood pressure lowers too much or if you are dehydrated.
High Potassium level: Telmisartan can cause your potassium levels to become high. Your healthcare provider will likely monitor your potassium levels, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Telmisartan or increasing the dose of Telmisartan to make sure potassium stays within a safe range.
Increased creatinine level: Creatinine level can go up, and this sometimes indicates that the medication is actually working. Blood work will be needed to monitor creatinine levels to ensure it remains within safe ranges, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Telmisartan or increasing the dose of Telmisartan.
Always notify your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects or have any concerns or questions about your medication. They can provide the best advice and support for your specific situation.

Anticonvulsant drugs are classified as either classic or newer anticonvulsants. Newer anticonvulsants are usually better tolerated and have a broader therapeutic range than classic anticonvulsant drugs. The choice of drug is guided by the type of seizure. First-line treatment for focal seizures includes e.g., lamotrigine or levetiracetam, while valproate is used for generalized seizures. All anticonvulsants have dose-dependent side effects on the central nervous system such as somnolence and nausea, but some agents have more specific side effects (e.g., gingival hyperplasia caused by phenytoin).
Besides their importance in anti-epileptic therapy, anticonvulsants are also used for pain management (e.g., carbamazepine or gabapentin as coanalgesics) or as mood stabilizers in bipolar disorders (valproate).

How to reduce dose of Carbamazepine in Trigeminal Neuralgia, tips by Dr Rajesh Shah, MD, director Life Force, based on his experience of having treated over 1000 TN cases using homeopathy. More information at http://www.TrigeminalNeuralgia.us

CARBAMAZEPINE belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants or anti-epileptics used to treat epilepsy (fits) and trigeminal neuralgia (pain in the face's nerves). Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which there is a sudden rush of electric impulses (electric activity) in the brain. As a result, the brain's electrical rhythms become imbalanced, resulting in recurrent episodes of seizures or fits. Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition which affects the trigeminal nerve that carries sensations from the face to the brain.
CARBAMAZEPINE contains 'Carbamazepine' that reduces the electrical impulses and subsequent firing of the nerve impulses that cause fits. Thus, CARBAMAZEPINE decreases the excessive and abnormal nerve activity in the brain, thereby controlling seizures.
Side Effects of CARBAMAZEPINE
Dizziness
Tiredness
Uncontrolled movements
Nausea
Headache
Changes in liver enzymes
Low white blood cells count
Minor skin reactions

Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant medication.
Carbamazepine is used in epilepsy to prevent grand mal and partial seizures. It is also used to treat nerve damage due to diabetes, manic depression, as well as trigeminal neuralgia, which is a condition where sufferers feel an intense stabbing pain in the face.
Each individual's dosage of Gericarb SR will vary depending on their condition and reaction to the drug. The following is a general dosage guide to Gericarb SR.
* For epilepsy the regular starting dose is 100-200 mg once or twice daily. This dose will gradually be increased or decreased to control your fits.
The usual maintenance dose is 400mg - 600mg morning and evening.
* For trigeminal neuralgia the usual starting dose is between 100 mg and 400 mg a day. This dose can slowly be increased to treat the pain. In some cases, up to 1600 mg.
When the pain goes away, your doctor will reduce the dose. After a few weeks, if the pain does not return, he may stop treatment.
* In the prevention of mood swings the usual starting dose is 100-400 mg daily in divided doses.
This dose can be increased slowly until symptoms are controlled. In a few cases up to 1600 mg daily.
The usual daily dose is 400 mg-600 mg.

After a hormone positive (ER+) breast cancer diagnosis women are commonly prescribed Tamoxifen which blocks oestrogen from getting to any breast cancer cells. You’d think a small daily tablet wouldn’t do much but the side effects can be horrific. From hot flushes, to achy joints, to weight gain to brain fog. Today I caught up with former breast cancer consultant Liz O’Riordan who had breast cancer twice about how best to cope. Visit us at www.the-c-list.com or @thetittygritty on Instagram x

Prof Cuzick (Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, London, UK) talks to ecancertv at SABCS 2014 about the results of the IBIS-I trial which looked at the long-term risks and benefits of taking tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer in women at high risk for developing the disease.

Video abstract of original research paper “CYP2D6 polymorphisms may predict occurrence of adverse effects to tamoxifen: a preliminary retrospective study” published in the open access journal Breast Cancer - Targets and Therapy by authors Wickramage I, Tennekoon KH, Ariyaratne MAY.
Introduction and aims: Tamoxifen is an adjuvant drug effective in treating hormone receptor – positive breast cancer. However, 30%–50% of patients relapse and many develop adverse
effects, such as hot flashes and fatty liver. Allelic variations altering the activity of cytochrome P450-2D6 enzyme affect response to tamoxifen by modulating metabolism of tamoxifen into its pharmacologically active metabolite endoxifen. Although association between CYP2D6 polymorphisms and recurrence of breast cancer in patients on tamoxifen had been reported, little
evidence exists on association between these polymorphisms and adverse effects to tamoxifen. This study explored the association between CYP2D6 polymorphisms and tamoxifen effects,
hitherto not studied in Sri Lanka.
Methods: A retrospective preliminary study was carried out on 24 breast cancer patients on tamoxifen for minimally 3 months attending National Cancer Institute, Maharagama, Sri Lanka.
They were not on CYP2D6-inhibiting drugs, chemotherapy or other endocrine therapy, and had no conditions that could occur as adverse effects to tamoxifen before starting the therapy. Their
blood samples were collected, DNA was extracted and genotyped using SNaPshot Multiplex sequencing based single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) assay.
Results: SNP/allele frequencies detected: 1846G greater than A (confirmatory of *4 null allele)=8.3%; 2549delA (confirmatory of *3 null allele)=50%; 100C greater than T (suggestive of *10 reduced functional allele, in addition to other alleles)=0%; combination of 2988G greater than A, -1584C and 2850C greater than T (strongly suggestive of *41 or other reduced functional allele)=4.8%. Occurrence of heterozygous 2988G greater than A SNP with -1584C and 2850C greater than T was significantly higher among those with ultrasound-diagnosed fatty liver following the commencement of tamoxifen therapy (P=0.029). Adverse effects occurred at a significantly higher frequency among postmenopausal women (P=0.041). Three patients who developed recurrence of breast cancer had no association with SNPs tested.
Conclusions: CYP2D6 SNP combination 2988G greater than A, -1584C and 2850C greater than T, strongly suggestive of *41 reduced functional allele, is likely to be useful in predicting occurrence of adverse effect fatty liver in breast cancer patients on tamoxifen, thereby alternative treatment can be considered and lifestyle modifications implemented. Larger sample studies are recommended with the measurement of tamoxifen and metabolite levels. Alternative therapy should be considered for postmenopausal patients.

When you have hormone positive cancer and you are taking tamoxifen, letrozole, anastrozole, exemestane, Lupron, or Zoladex - you can experience a side effect like vaginal dryness. The problem is that our doctors don't often talk about it! Sexual health and combating side effects of the medication we HAVE to take is such an important topic to discuss when it comes to cancer, but I feel the conversations are lacking. In this video I shed some light on the subject as well as some ways to avoid or combat the issue.

Dr. John Link, author of "The Breast Cancer Survival Manual," talks about the pros and cons of Tamoxifen, a hormone medication that reduces the risk of breast cancer.
Tamoxifen was developed in the 1970s. It was traditionally prescribed for five years and decreased recurrence in lungs, bones, and liver by 30 percent. Sadly, doctors discovered that Tamoxifen caused uterine cancer in some women who took it for more than five years. Scientists in Europe who continued testing Tamoxifen for up to ten years found that it decreased over deaths from breast cancer by about four percent. It wasn’t the enormous breakthrough doctors were hoping for, but it was big enough that patients should talk to their doctors about it, to determine if it might be helpful in preventing another cancer diagnosis.

Take Dr. Berg's Advanced Evaluation Quiz: http://bit.ly/EvalQuiz
In this video, Dr. Berg talks about Tamoxifen, which is an estrogen blocker used for certain types of breast disease. The problem is it (tamoxifen, Nolvadex - Tamoxifen Citrate, comes with a package (side effects): lymphoedema from blood clots, increased risk of disease in the uterus and stroke (pulmonary embolism), depression, hot flashes, etc.
But the question is why does your body make estrogen if it's so bad. I believe it's the endogenous estrogen (external or environmental estrogens). If you look at endocrine disruptors, you will find all the chemicals in our environment mimic estrogen. These chemicals can increase your own body's production of estrogen.

I've been taking tamoxifen for 1 year and half now and these are the side effects that I have experienced so far! Tamoxifen was prescribed because my breast cancer was hormonal, therefore taking an estrogen receptor reduces my chances of recurrence. The side effects seem scary, and sometimes it may seem like the risks outweigh the benefits. But in my case... I chose to take the medication. Read more at http://www.nalie.ca

Highlights:
- The latest updated Cochrane Review: Neuraminidase inhibitors for preventing and treating influenza in healthy adults and children, is based on full internal reports of 20 Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and 26 Relenza (zanamivir) trials. These trials involved more than 24,000 people and the findings challenge the historical assumption that neuraminidase inhibitors are effective in combating influenza. The evidence also suggests there are insufficient grounds to support the use of Tamiflu in preventing person-to-person spread of influenza. This raises further questions about the most effective way to support drug regulation and public health policy decision-making. Claims about the effectiveness of Tamiflu against complications were a key factor in decisions made by governments around the world to stockpile these drugs in case of a pandemic. The US has spent more than $1.3 billion buying a strategic reserve of antivirals, while in the UK the government has spent almost £424 million for a stockpile of about 40 million doses*.
- Compared with a placebo, taking Tamiflu led to a quicker alleviation of influenza-like symptoms of just half a day (from 7 days to 6.3 days) in adults, but the effect in children was more uncertain. There was no evidence of a reduction in hospitalisations or serious influenza complications; confirmed pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis or ear infection in either adults or children. Tamiflu also increased the risk of nausea and vomiting in adults by around 4 percent and in children by 5 percent. There was a reported increased risk of psychiatric events of around 1 percent when Tamiflu was used to prevent influenza. Evidence also suggests that Tamiflu prevented some people from producing sufficient numbers of their own antibodies to fight infection.

What Is Oseltamivir For Flu Treatment? In this informative video, we will discuss oseltamivir, a prescription antiviral medication used to treat influenza. We will explain how oseltamivir works to combat the flu virus, including its role as a neuraminidase inhibitor that limits the virus's spread within the body. You will learn about the different forms of oseltamivir, how it is taken, and the importance of timing when starting treatment. We will also cover the dosage recommendations for both adults and children, as well as situations where oseltamivir can be used preventively.
Additionally, we will address common side effects and the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional before using this medication, especially for those at higher risk for complications from influenza. While oseltamivir is a helpful tool in managing flu symptoms, we will emphasize the significance of annual flu vaccinations as the primary preventive measure against influenza.
