Cheap repurposed drug
Cheap repurposed drug Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Professor of Oncology, Angus Dalgleish gives vital information on a repurposed drug he uses for his cancer patients, given at a very low dose. This is Low Dose Naltrexone.

Check out the LDN trust website for much more,
https://ldnresearchtrust.org

Naltrexone at low doses (LDN) and its relevance to cancer therapy

https://openaccess.sgul.ac.uk/id/eprint/114135/

Naltrexone was designed to inhibit opioid receptors without activating them and hence used to block the stimulatory effects of morphine and heroin. It was noted that in certain patients being treated with naltrexone for an opioid addiction many reported significant secondary benefit when being weaned off naltrexone. This group of patients had chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions and reported improvements whilst using the lower dosages of naltrexone. There have also been recent anecdotal reports of cancer resolution following the use of low doses of naltrexone (LDN). However, the mechanism of action is unclear.
Areas covered

We review three mechanisms through which LDN can influence cancer progression; namely, (a) antagonism of receptors to which LDN binds, which include toll-like receptors 7–9 that lead to IL-6 suppression b) modulation of immune function in patients; and c) direct inhibition of signaling pathways involved in cancer cell control, including the priming of pro-apoptotic pathways.

Expert opinion
Considering the increase in the number of anecdotal reports of activity, there will likely be a bigger drive toward using LDN in the oncological setting. These reports support clinical trials of LDN in cancer, especially when given in combination with certain chemotherapy.

Psychiatric side effects of Montelukast, Singulair

Montelukast is the generic name for a medicine that's also sold under the brand name Singulair. It's usually prescribed to treat asthma. It can also be prescribed to treat allergies.

Shortly after montelukast entered clinical practice, I started getting calls and messages -- usually from parents -- about the new onset of mood changes, suicidal ideas, or psychosis in people who took this medication.

Last spring (March, 2020), the FDA required a boxed warning be added to the montelukast (Singulair) prescribing information. (Boxed warnings are the most prominent form of warning in the FDA safety communication system).

The most likely explanation for the psychiatric side effect potential of montelukast (Singulair) lies in its unique mechanism of action. The drug prevents the conversion of an omega-6 fatty acid (arachidonic acid) into a signaling molecule known as leukotriene. Leukotrienes are inflammation molecules. So blocking their formation can be a good way to treat asthma.
But in blocking the path from arachidonic acid to leukotriene, the arachidonic acid is probably pushed into other pathways (like the prostaglandin pathway) whose products can interact with neurotransmitters that influence mood and behavior.

In this video, Dr. Sara Dugan reviews the psychiatric side effects of montelukast.

This lecture was given at the January 12, 2021 meeting of the SZconsult learning community.

Doctor explains METOPROLOL (Lopressor) | Uses, Doses, side effects & more [Educational video]
Doctor explains METOPROLOL (Lopressor) | Uses, Doses, side effects & more [Educational video] Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key facts you need to know about Metoprolol - also known by its brand name 'Lopressor' - a medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart problems and migraine.

What is Metoprolol?

Metoprolol is a type of medicine called a beta blocker. Like other beta blockers, metoprolol works by changing the way your body responds to some nerve impulses, especially in the heart. It slows down your heart rate and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body.

What doses of Metoprolol / Tablet Strengths and Uses are available?

Metoprolol is available in 50mg and 100mg strengths, used for treating high blood pressure, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, migraine prevention, and thyrotoxicosis, with varying dosages specific to each condition.

Administration Guidelines

Metoprolol an be taken with or without food, tablets should be swallowed whole with water, and some can be split in half if indicated. The first dose might be recommended at bedtime due to possible dizziness, otherwise taken in the morning, with evenly spaced doses if multiple are required daily.

Duration and Discontinuation

Metoprolol treatment is typically long-term, potentially lifelong. Stopping abruptly can worsen the condition, so a doctor's guidance is needed for cessation. The medicine takes 1 to 2 days to leave the body after stopping.

Overdose Risks and Actions

Overdose effects vary but can include slowed heart rate, breathing difficulties, dizziness, and trembling. Immediate medical advice is necessary if an overdose occurs. Bring medication packet and any remaining pills to the emergency services.

Are there any side effects of metoprolol?

According to the NHS UK website "Metoprolol is generally safe to take for a long time. In fact, it works best when taken for long periods of time."

Midazolam Injection: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects, and Important Advice
Midazolam Injection: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects, and Important Advice Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Welcome to MediInsights! Our slogan, "Unlocking The Wonders of Wellness," reflects our commitment to providing you with detailed and accurate health information. In today’s video, we’re diving deep into the world of Midazolam Injection, covering everything you need to know about its uses, dosage, mechanism of action, side effects, and important advice.

Midazolam Injection: A Versatile Medication

Midazolam injection is a powerful medication from the benzodiazepine class, widely used for its sedative, anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing), amnestic (memory-blocking), and muscle-relaxant properties. Here’s a closer look at its primary uses:

Preoperative Sedation: Used before surgeries to reduce anxiety and induce calmness.
Procedural Sedation: Ideal for medical procedures like endoscopies, providing sedation, anxiolysis, and amnesia.
Anesthesia Induction: Combined with other drugs to induce anesthesia.
Seizure Control: Effective in managing acute seizures, including status epilepticus.
ICU Sedation: Essential for sedating mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care units.

Dosage of Midazolam Injection:

Dosage varies based on age, weight, medical condition, and intended use.

Mechanism of Action of Midazolam Injection:

Midazolam enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that inhibits brain activity. By binding to GABA_A receptors, midazolam increases the influx of chloride ions into neurons, reducing excitability and producing sedative, anxiolytic, muscle-relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects.

Side Effects of Midazolam Injection:

While effective, midazolam can cause several side effects:

Common Side Effects: Drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, light-headedness, amnesia, nausea, vomiting, respiratory depression, hypotension, and injection site reactions.
Severe Side Effects: Respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), and paradoxical reactions (agitation, involuntary movements, hostility).

Important Advice for Using Midazolam Injection:

Administration: Only by healthcare professionals with experience in sedative medications. Continuous monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular status is crucial.
Dosage Adjustments: Tailor the dosage based on the patient’s specifics. Lower doses may be required for the elderly and those with significant comorbidities.
Avoid Alcohol and CNS Depressants: Avoid combining with alcohol or other depressants to reduce the risk of respiratory depression.
Precautions: Use caution in patients with chronic respiratory diseases, compromised airways, or a history of substance abuse.
Patient Monitoring: Ensure patients are fully alert before discharge, especially if they need to operate machinery or drive.
Emergency Equipment: Resuscitative equipment and medications should be readily available.
Pregnancy and Lactation: Avoid use during pregnancy unless necessary. Use caution if breastfeeding, as midazolam can pass into breast milk.
Drug Interactions: Be aware of interactions, particularly with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4, and adjust dosage accordingly.

What is Reglan used for? Common uses, dosing details, potential side effects, and user experiences
What is Reglan used for? Common uses, dosing details, potential side effects, and user experiences Side Effects 4 Views • 5 months ago

Reglan, also known by its generic name metoclopramide, is a medication that is primarily used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. It works by increasing the movement and contractions of the stomach and intestines, which helps to improve the symptoms associated with certain conditions.

One of the main uses of Reglan is to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a chronic condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn, acid regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing. By enhancing the movement of the digestive system, Reglan can help reduce these symptoms and provide relief to patients.

Another common use of Reglan is for the treatment of diabetic gastroparesis. Gastroparesis is a condition where the stomach takes longer than usual to empty its contents, leading to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and bloating. In patients with diabetes, high blood sugar levels can damage the nerves that control stomach contractions, resulting in gastroparesis. Reglan can help improve the motility of the stomach and alleviate these symptoms.

Reglan is also sometimes prescribed to individuals undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy to prevent or relieve nausea and vomiting caused by these treatments. It works by blocking certain receptors in the brain that trigger these symptoms, offering much-needed relief to patients who may already be dealing with the side effects of cancer treatments.

It's important to note that Reglan should only be used as directed by a healthcare professional and for the specific conditions it is prescribed for. Like any medication, Reglan can have potential side effects, and its use should be closely monitored by a healthcare provider.

In conclusion, Reglan is a medication commonly used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as GERD, diabetic gastroparesis, and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Its ability to enhance stomach and intestinal contractions makes it an effective option for managing symptoms associated with these conditions."
