In this video, we review the popular antidepressant, mirtazapine. Mirtazapine is indicated for depression but may also be used in PTSD, OCD and insomnia. Mirtazapine has a unique mechanism of action that gives it an interesting side effect profile - drowsiness and weight gain are common while sexual dysfunction and nausea are rare. A large network meta analysis found that mirtazapine stacks up favourably compared to other antidepressants in terms of efficacy and acceptability. In my opinion, Mirtazapine is best suited for those with depression and insomnia who do not mind gaining a bit of weight.

In this episode, I discuss a medication known as lorazepam (Ativan). This benzodiazepine prescription medication is most commonly known for its use in treating anxiety but in this video, I go over some other uses such as epilepsy, insomnia, and alcohol withdrawal. It's important to start on a lower dose and increase over time under the instruction of your physician. The most common side effect of lorazepam is the sedating effect which can happen in up to 16% of patients. I discuss some other side effects in the video.
My book is now available! It discusses my experience with Bipolar Disorder.
