Olanzapine (Zyprexa) Without the Weight Gain Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

While Olanzapine is an effective medication, it’s side effect profile can be nasty. Things like weight gain, changes in blood lipids, and changes in blood glucose are common. ALKS 3831 attempts to fix this problem by adding Samidorphan to olanzapine to reduce weight gain.

00:00 - Intro
00:16 - What is Zyprexa?
00:25 - What is Zyprexa (Olanzapine) used for?
01:20 - What does Zyprexa Withdrawal look like?
06:46 - Am I schizophrenic if I take Zyprexa?
09:08 - What are Zyprexa Alternatives?
11:17 - Can Zyprexa cause tardive dyskinesia?
14:08 - Outro

1. What is Zyprexa? Zyprexa is an atypical antipsychotic

2. What is Zyprexa (Olanzapine) used for? Zyprexa is used in the treatment of schizophrenia and sometimes for the stabilization of bipolar. These diagnoses are sometimes however confused with hypoglycemia, drug use, and spiritual crisis.

3. What does Zyprexa Withdrawal look like? Since there is a dopamine surge coming off of Zyprexa, the withdrawal generally looks like a return of the original symptoms. Typical signs are mania, psychosis, inability to sleep, lack of desire to eat. This can be lessened by doing a very slow withdrawal and avoiding stimulants like caffeine.

To read more about Zyprexa Withdrawal and Olanzapine visit:
https://www.alternativetomeds.....com/antipsychotics/z

4. Am I schizophrenic if I take Zyprexa? No, but sometimes the drug itself can create symptoms that look like schizophrenia. There is a difference between schizoaffective and schizophrenic, which the later tends to have a more constant presentation of symptoms.

5. What are Zyprexa Alternatives? Vitamin C, Niacin, Lithium Orotate, restricting drug use, avoiding stimulants.

To read more about Zyprexa Alternatives and Olanzapine alternatives visit:
https://www.alternativetomeds.....com/blog/zyprexa-alt

6. Can Zyprexa cause tardive dyskinesia? Any antipsychotic can cause tardive dyskinesia or akathisia. Atypicals are less likely than typical antipsychotics. Certain genetic factors like the CYP2D6 or CYP3A4 polymorphisms are suspected.

Your Medication Olanzapine

Olanzapine is also known as the brand name: Zyprexa and Zydis

Olanzapine comes in tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, and injectable dosage forms.

Olanzapine is most commonly used for: manifestations of schizophrenia, treatment of bipolar type I disorders, and mixed mania episodes associated with bipolar type I disorders. Olanzapine may also be used for nausea/vomiting from chemotherapy treatment, psychosis/agitation associated with dementia, PTSD, or for Tourette syndrome. Tablets are taken by mouth with or without food. Orally disintegrating tablets should be allowed to dissolve on the tongue without food or drink and should not be chewed or crushed. The injection is given as a shot into the muscle.

Standard dosing of olanzapine ranges from: 10 to 15 mg per day to a max of 60 mg

Some common side effects with olanzapine include: low blood pressure, drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, and weight gain.
Some less common side effects include: increased heart rate, low blood pressure, abnormal dreams, confusion, behavioral changes, nausea or vomiting.

Olanzapine use in adolescents 13 years and older may result in increased weight gain and sedation. Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with olanzapine have an increased chance of death.

• Have chest pain or a heartbeat that does not feel normal
• Experience changes in mood or involuntary movements
• Have seizures
• Have changes in balance
• Have thoughts of hurting yourself

Zyprexa (olanzapine) Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses Zyprexa (olanzapine) which is a second generation neuroleptic or antipsychotic (SGA). Although it is referred to as an antipsychotic, this medication can be utilized in the treatment of mania (in bipolar disorder) and also can be used to treat depression (for example, augmenting an SSRI or SNRI). It has the potential for many side effects, and some of them are discussed in this video.

Dr. Pagnani is the founder and medical director of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates, an Instructor at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for the Department of Psychiatry, he supervises psychiatric residents at Jefferson Hospital, he serves on the Young Professional Board of Uplift, the Center for Grieving Children and he maintains a private practice of Psychiatry in Philadelphia where he sees patients for one-time psychiatric evaluations and second opinions. He is a licensed physician and surgeon in NJ, PA, NY, MD, DE, FL and CA and can provide consultations to individuals via HIPAA compliant Telehealth visits living in these locations.

Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates is a private practice of psychiatry consisting of about 25 psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychotherapists with physical locations in Philadelphia and Paoli, PA and serving all of PA, NJ, NY and FL virtually via HIPAA compliant tele-psychiatry. Individuals seeking not only evaluations but long-term psychiatric care, can contact Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates directly.

These videos aim to increase awareness and discussion of mental health topics and to encourage struggling individuals to schedule an appointment directly with a mental health provider. Mental health needs to be normalized, and simply speaking about mental health topics openly, is an important first step.

Dr. Pagnani and Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates are NOT advocating for or against the use of any mentioned psychiatric medications for any specific individual. Additionally, any side effects mentioned are not a complete list of potential side effects or contraindications to taking any mentioned medications, and all risks and benefits of a medication should be discussed with an individual’s provider at an appointment, before starting, stopping or making changes to a medication regimen.

Octreotide is a man-made peptide that mimics the activity of somatostatin, a hormone created by the hypothalamus gland. Somatostatin inhibits the release of growth hormone from the pituitary gland and regulates the tears of various other hormonal agents, consisting of the hormone insulin and glucagon. The smart Trick of "The Science Behind Octreotide and Its Effects on Weight" That Nobody is Talking About

Octreotide is made use of to manage a assortment of problems, featuring acromegaly, carcinoid syndrome, and gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine cysts.

One possible side result of octreotide therapy is weight loss. In some individuals, this can easily be a preferable end result, specifically if they are over weight or overweight. However, in others it can easily be challenging and require interference.

The device by which octreotide leads to weight reduction is not completely clear. One possibility is that it reduces cravings by restraining ghrelin tears. Ghrelin is a hormone produced in the stomach that activates food cravings and food consumption. Studies have presented that octreotide can minimize ghrelin degrees in well-balanced volunteers and in individuals along with acromegaly or kind 2 diabetes mellitus mellitus.

An additional potential device for octreotide-induced body weight reduction is change of blood sugar metabolic rate. Octreotide has been presented to boost blood insulin level of sensitivity in patients along with type 2 diabetes mellitus through reducing hepatic glucose manufacturing and raising outer sugar uptake. This impact may likewise add to weight reduction through decreasing distributing blood sugar amounts and ensuring fatty tissue oxidation.

In enhancement to these metabolic results, octreotide may possess straight impacts on adipose cells physiology. In vitro studies have revealed that somatostatin receptors are current on adipocytes (body fat tissues) and that somatostatin can easily inhibit lipolysis (the break down of stashed fat). It is feasible that octreotide has actually comparable effects on adipose tissue metabolism in vivo.

Clinical research studies have shown the effectiveness of octreotide for weight loss in various patient populaces. For instance, a randomized controlled test published in JAMA in 2008 matched up the effects of octreotide and inactive drug on body weight reduction in overweight adults with type 2 diabetic issues mellitus. After 16 full weeks of therapy, the octreotide team shed an standard of 4.4 kilograms (9.7 lbs) matched up to a unpleasant body weight increase of 0.5 kilograms (1.1 pounds) in the inactive medicine group.

An additional research study posted in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2013 analyzed the results of octreotide on physical body weight and structure in individuals along with acromegaly. After six months of treatment, clients experienced substantial declines in physical body weight, body mass mark, and waist circumference.

While octreotide can easily be efficient for body weight reduction, it is not without dangers and side effects. Popular side results feature gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Uncommon but significant edge results feature gallstones, pancreatitis, and heart arrhythmias.

In final thought, octreotide is a artificial peptide that copies the activity of somatostatin and has actually a range of restorative make use of. One possible side impact is body weight reduction, which might be mediated by modifications in appetite regulation, sugar rate of metabolism, and adipose tissue anatomy. While successful for some patients, it is important to carefully evaluate the dangers and perks just before initiating treatment with octreotide for body weight reduction functions.

Nortriptyline (pamelor)
Nortriptyline (pamelor) Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses Nortriptyline (pamelor) a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). Triclyclic antidepressants have been used to treat depression and anxiety disorders since the 1950's. They can be extremely effective medications for treating various psychiatric conditions, especially when SSRIs or SNRIs are not effective. With that said, they have the potential to cause several side effects (some serious) and should only be taken under the direct supervision of a mental health professional.

2-Minute Neuroscience: Norepinephrine
2-Minute Neuroscience: Norepinephrine Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Norepinephrine, also known as noradrenaline, is a neurotransmitter and hormone that plays critical roles in the function of the nervous system. In this video, I discuss norepinephrine synthesis, where norepinephrine-producing neurons are concentrated, norepinephrine receptors, and the functions of norepinephrine.

TRANSCRIPT:

Norepinephrine, also known as noradrenaline, is a monoamine neurotransmitter, a term that refers its chemical structure and the fact that it’s derived from an amino acid. It is also a catecholamine, a term that again refers to its chemical structure and the fact that it contains a catechol nucleus. Norepinephrine also functions as a hormone. It is synthesized from dopamine in a reaction catalyzed by the enzyme dopamine beta-hydroxylase.

Norepinephrine-producing neurons in the central nervous system are primarily concentrated in the pons and medulla. The most prominent of these groups of neurons is a nucleus called the locus coeruleus, which is the main site of norepinephrine production for the central nervous system. Norepinephrine is also the primary neurotransmitter used by the sympathetic nervous system, and is found in clusters of sympathetic neurons located near the spinal cord known as sympathetic ganglia. It is also released from the adrenal glands as a hormone.

Norepinephrine acts on g protein-coupled receptors referred to as adrenergic receptors or adrenoceptors. There are thought to be at least three main types of adrenergic receptors, alpha-1, alpha-2 and beta-adrenergic receptors, each of which has multiple subtypes. Norepinephrine is removed from the synaptic cleft by a transport protein called the norepinephrine transporter.

Like any neurotransmitter, the actions of norepinephrine depend on the type of receptor it activates, and where that receptor is located. Thus, although norepinephrine in the central nervous system is frequently associated with arousal, alertness, and attention, the full extent of its actions are more complex.
