Review how DHP (vs non DHP) Calcium Channel Blockers work, including their mechanism of action and side effects.
Study this Dihydropyridine Calcium Channel Blockers mnemonic for nursing pharmacology and other NCLEX mnemonics with Pixorize.
DHP calcium channel blockers consist of medications that end in “-dipine”, including amlodipine, nifedipine, and felodipine. These drugs work by causing arterial vasodilation, which has the overall effect of reducing blood pressure. Clinically, these drugs are used to treat hypertension and angina. Side effects include peripheral edema, flushing, reflex tachycardia, and headache. Patients taking calcium channel blockers should avoid grapefruit juice.

Calcium channel blockers nursing pharmacology review of the mechanism of action, side effects, nursing implications, and patient education. These reviews will discuss the Dihydropyridine vs Nondihydrophyridine in terms of calcium channel blockers.
Calcium channel blockers block the L-type calcium channels in the vascular smooth muscle, cardiac myocytes, and cardiac nodal tissue.
Therefore, the mechanism of action for calcium channel blockers are to cause vasodilation of the coronary and peripheral arteries, decrease the strength of heart contractions, decrease the function of the SA (slow the heart rate) and AV (slow the speed of electrical conduction) nodes.
In other words, calcium channel blockers have a negative inotropic, negative chronotropic, and negative dromotropic effect on the heart.
It is important to note that some types of calcium channel blockers are more selective to the vascular smooth muscle, while some calcium channel blockers are more selective the myocardium.
Dihydropyridine are more selective to the vascular smooth muscle. This includes amlodipine, felodipine, and nifedipine. Nondihydrophyridine are more selective to the myocardium. This includes Verapamil and Diltiazem.
Side effects of calcium channel blockers include: hypotension, bradycardia, EKG changes (first degree AV block), constipation, reflex tachycardia etc.
Please watch the video for nursing implication of calcium channel blockers.

- Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker. It inhibits movement of calcium ions across cell membrane in systemic and coronary vascular smooth muscle, leading to vasodilatation and reduction in peripheral vascular resistance. So it reduces myocardial oxygen demand, and relaxes and prevents coronary artery spasm.
- It is available as 10, 20 mg immediate-release capsules, and 30, 60, and 90 mg extended-release tablets.
- Nifedipine is used in the treatment hypertension, and for chronic stable angina or vasospastic angina, also known as Prinzmetal’s angina.

Inositol Hexanicotinate Review – Side effects, Uses & Benefits
Other names
Hexaniacinate d’Inositol, Hexanicotinate d’Inositol, Hexanicotinate de Meso-Inositol, Hexanicotinyl cis-1,2,3-5-trans-4,6-cyclohexane, Hexanicotinoyl Inositol, Inositol Hexaniacinate, Inositol Hexanicotinate, Inositol Niacinate, Meso-Inositol Hexanicotinate, Myo-inositol hexa-3-pyridine-carboxyalte, Niacinate d’Inositol, Niacine Sans Rougissement, Nicotinate d'Inositol, Nicotinato de Inositol, No-Flush Niacin.
Inositol nicotinate is a compound made of niacin (vitamin B3) and inositol. Inositol occurs naturally in the body and can also be made in the laboratory.
Inositol nicotinate is used for treating blood circulation problems, including pain when walking due to poor circulation in the legs (intermittent claudication); skin changes caused by pooling of the blood in the legs (stasis dermatitis) when veins are ineffective in returning blood to the heart; narrowing of the blood vessels leading to cold fingers and toes (Raynaud’s disease); and blood flow problems in the brain (cerebral vascular disease). Inositol nicotinate has been used in conventional medical practice in Great Britain for improving symptoms of poor circulation for many years, although it is usually not the preferred treatment choice.
Inositol nicotinate is also used for high cholesterol; high blood pressure; sleep problems (insomnia); migraines related to “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis); skin conditions, including scleroderma, acne, dermatitis, psoriasis, and others; inflammation of the tongue (exfoliative glossitis); restless leg syndrome; and schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.
How does it work?
Inositol nicotinate releases a form of niacin when it is processed by the body. The niacin can widen blood vessels, lower blood levels of fats such as cholesterol, and break up a protein needed for the clotting of blood.

Vitamin B3 (NIACIN) - best and safest form of niacin, how much to take, and how it works
**********************************************
In this video you'll discover the nootropics benefits of Vitamin B3 (Niacin). Including why we use Niacin as a nootropic, recommended dosage, side effects, preventing niacin flushing, clinical research, and the best type of Niacin to buy. This is an update to the video I made on Niacin several years ago.
Vitamin B3 (Niacin, nicotinic acid) is is one of eight B-Vitamins. Niacin as a precursor to NAD and NADH repairs cell and DNA damage. And stimulates your immune system.
Niacin boosts the production of Nitric Oxide (NO) which relaxes blood vessels in your brain increasing brain blood flow. And niacin acts as an antioxidant helping to eliminate free radicals that can damage brain cells.
As a precursor to NADH, niacin provides electrons for ATP synthesis within our mitochondria for cellular energy. Low levels of niacin result in brain fog, slow mental processing, and cognitive decline.
Niacin affects cognitive function by stimulating the production of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin.
Neurohackers report Niacin helps to reduce skin inflammation, flare ups, irritation, redness and for treating severe cases of acne.
Niacin is also used for treating and to help prevent schizophrenia.
And Niacin is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) because it acts as a vasodilator.
This in-depth updated Vitamin B3 (Niacin) review covers:

0:00 Vitamin B3 and schizophrenia
0:07 What is schizophrenia?
0:23 Causes of schizophrenia
1:00 Another theory
2:20 Other potential benefits of vitamin B3
Today we’re going to talk about niacin (vitamin B3) and schizophrenia. With schizophrenia, a person may have hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, feelings of disconnection, a loss of interest in life, and may feel emotionless.
The medical theory of what causes schizophrenia is dopamine excess. A person is then given certain drugs to help regulate this. The potential problem with these drugs is that they could have side effects that cause metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. This has been shown to worsen symptoms of schizophrenia because of what it could do to the brain.
However, Dr. Abram Hoffer had another theory about schizophrenia. It was called the adrenochrome theory. Adrenochrome is basically the byproducts of adrenaline. In his research, he found that the chemical structure of adrenaline is similar to LSD and that in higher amounts, it could have certain effects on the brain. His theory was that schizophrenia comes from excessive amounts of adrenochrome in the brain, which is toxic.
Normally, a person has an enzyme that clears out that chemical. But, people with schizophrenia have a defect with this enzyme. He found that large doses of vitamin B3 every day (straight niacin) may help prevent the conversion of the precursor of adrenaline to adrenaline, making less adrenaline. This could potentially help clear out adrenaline as well as decrease the production of adrenaline.
Other potential benefits of vitamin B3:
• It could help reduce liver toxicity
• It could help reduce oxidative stress in the mitochondria
• It could help the DNA repair

If you've taken a new supplement for the first time, or you've increased the dosage for the first time, you may be nervous.
It definitely doesn't help if you swallow a capsule and your body starts heating up, palms get sweaty and you feel like you're sunburned.
These are the symptoms of a Niacin Flush.
It's harmless. Totally harmless.
Yet scary for the first time.
Symptoms of a niacin flush are:
- increased feeling of warmth on the face, torso, feet, hands, arms and possibly legs.
- tops of your ears may feel warm, too
- sweating a bit due to the warmth
How long does a Niacin Flush last?
- Usually 20 minutes to 60 minutes tops - depending on how much you took
What forms of Niacin cause niacin flushing?
- Niacin USP
- Nicotinic acid
Why not use just non-flushing niacin?
- It's not as beneficial for the body.
- non-flushing niacin can actually be harmful to the liver

Niacin (Vitamin B-3) is involved in over 400 biochemical reactions in the body!
As with other nutrients, methylfolate and niacin levels need to be in balance.
High doses of specific nutrients will push certain biochemical pathways more than others.
This is why niacin can be used to offset methylfolate side effects.
Niacin deficiency can cause: irritability, headaches, migraines, and possibly skin issues.

Learn about the possible side effects of a birth control implant in this Howcast video.
The birth control implant is a small plastic rod that gets placed into your arm, and it lasts for three years.
One of the most common side effects of this form of birth control is breakthrough bleeding. You may notice that when you have this implant placed that your periods will no longer be predictable. In fact, you can have irregular bleeding and spotting for the duration of this implant. So, after you've had the implant placed, if you notice irregular bleeding, don't worry. If you are concerned, you can always call your physician or your nurse practitioner. However, the birth control is still effective despite the bleeding.
Another side effect that patients may be concerned with are headaches. If you do get headaches with this form of birth control, you can take Tylenol and Motrin to relieve them. But if you notice that the headaches are persisting and you're concerned, you can always call your physician or your nurse practitioner to talk about the side effects.

What's happening in your body when you get heartburn?
Nexium Control® could make you forget all about your heartburn. But if you’re interested in some of the causes of heartburn and acid reflux, here’s a little more information.
Find out more here: https://www.nexiumcontrol.co.uk/heartburn

Proton Pump Inhibitor Flaws Spurring Litigation
Millions of Americans take proton pump inhibitors like Nexium and Prilosec for gastric distress, but the solution may be worse than the problem.
Proton pump inhibitors alleviate problems like acid reflux and heartburn by reducing the amount of stomach acid produced. A growing body of research suggests that long-term use of these drugs can cause major health problems. Proton pump inhibitor side effects can include serious kidney damage and kidney failure. A growing number of lawsuits are challenging big drug companies on this matter, arguing that the companies have downplayed the very serious long-term effects of these drugs.
People seeking relief from common complaints like heartburn and gastric reflux shouldn’t have to run the risk of serious kidney damage, and drug companies should be upfront about the risks these drugs pose.
If you’re among the 15 million Americans who regularly take PPI drugs, and you’ve experienced side effects from these medications, you may be able to recover compensation in a court of law.
Reach out to Saunders & Walker P.A. today for a consultation concerning proton pump inhibitor drugs and their impact on your health. Saunders & Walker P.A. is a firm with experience in taking on the big drug companies and winning.

Nexium Side Effects - In this video, we discuss the effects of Nexium, which include both the short term side effects and long term health concerns. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) often prescribed to treat heartburn and acid reflux, and more specifically, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). To provide relief, the drug effectively stops the stomach from producing acid. While this drug does have the ability to provide short term relief, it also has the potential to lead to long term health problems.
Most people are familiar with the side effects that are displayed on the commercial and box label because, quite simply, this is what is advertised. These side effects of Nexium include headaches, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, stomach pain and constipation. In addition, there are some even more severe initial Nexium side effects: dizziness, uneven heart rate, seizures, choking, and cramping. However, what is less known about the side effects of Nexium is what it can do to your body a year, 2 years, or even longer down the road.
Stomach acid can cause pain, hence acid reflux and why you are probably considering or already prescribed Nexium. However, stomach acid is a natural occurrence in the body. When you stop something in your body that is supposed to happen naturally, some nasty stuff can happen, especially if you take Nexium for too long (ie. more than 8 weeks).
In 40% of people who take Nexium for more than 8 weeks, they actually become addicted. And if you do end up taking Nexium for a year or more, it can increase the chance of Osteporosis by 45% and the chance of dementia by 18%. That is just startling!
In addition, with the lack of acid production, natural absorption of minerals is hindered, your stomach is more prone to infection and bacteria growth, which in turn, increases the chances of stomach cancer.
Like most prescription drugs, Nexium obviously serves a purpose and can rightfully be prescribed by a doctor to treat your heartburn or acid reflux. However, please note, that Nexium just provides short term relief instead of a long term solution to prevent you from having those uncomfortable symptoms in the future. This is why, after doing our research, we recommend that you click the link at the top of the video description to learn about some more natural ways to provide a permanent cure to heartburn and acid reflux.

Millions of Americans rely on common heartburn medications like Prilosec, Nexium, and Zantac for daily relief, with up to 70% of users possibly getting no benefit from them. But what if the long-term cost of that "relief" is far greater than you imagine? This is a critical warning you need to hear.
In this episode, Dr. Mark Hyman exposes the significant long-term side effects of these popular drugs, known as PPIs and H2 blockers. He explains how they can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies by blocking the absorption of B12, magnesium, and calcium. These deficiencies are linked to a host of devastating health issues, including an increased risk of dementia, neurologic problems, osteoporosis, and hip fractures. Observational studies have even linked their use to a higher risk of C. diff infections, pneumonia, heart attacks, and heart failure.
Dr. Hyman also reveals the great irony of acid reflux: for many, it's caused by too little stomach acid, not too much. He breaks down the true root causes—from diet and stress to gut imbalances—and provides a functional medicine toolkit with natural solutions to heal your gut so you can get off these medications for good.

Drug Cards Daily | Episode #37: gabapentin (Neurontin) | For Seizures and Neuropathic Pain
Gabapentin has a wide variety of uses but the main indications are for focal seizures in adults and children and for postherpatic neuralgia in adults. There are many commonly used off label indications such as for neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and alcohol dependence. Max dosing for gabapentin is around 3600 mg/day. Although the exact mechanism of action is unknown, it is clear that it is similar in chemical structure to GABA. This is important because GABA is responsible for modulating excitatory neurotransmitter release. Gabapentin is poorly protein bound at less than 3% and not metabolized. When discontinuing longer term therapies, doses should be tapered down over at least 7 days. Some of the most common side effects are dizziness, fatigue, and weight gain. The serious side effects are depression, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and withdrawal related seizures.
