#gabapentin #neurontin
Gabapentin belongs to a group of medicines called anticonvulsants.
It is a medication used to control repeated seizures in epilepsy and also to treat neuropathic pain due to nerve damage. It is a doctor's prescription-only
medication.
How does it work?
Gabapentin is thought to work by controlling brain chemicals that send signals to the nerves to help control seizures or neuropathic pain.
Before you start to take gabapentin Tell your doctor if
- you have any Allergies
- if you have any kidney problems • mixed seizure disorders which include absence seizures or any other medical condition
- if you taking any other medication which includes supplements you buy without a script.
more it video...
How to take it?
The dosage of gabapentin is dependent on your age, and if you are taking any other medication.
Your doctor will usually start you with a low dose and slowly increase it to the lowest dose to control your condition.
Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water. It does not matter if you take this medicine before or after food.
Take it at the same time every day. Use an alarm to remind you if needed. If you are taking Gabapentin three times a day, do not allow more than 12 hours between doses.
more in video...
What if you forget?
If you forget to take it, If it is almost time for your next dose which is within 4 hours, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to. Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking Gabapentin as you would normally
. Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you missed.
While you are on GabapentinYou must:
- Tell all health professionals who are treating of looking after you that you are on gabapentin
- Call your doctor immediately if you have any thoughts of suicide or self-harm, any unusual changes in mood or behaviour, or show signs of depression.
- if you become pregnant
Make sure you keep all your doctor's appointments as your doctor will need to monitor your progress and may want to take some tests from time to time to prevent unwanted side effects. Gabapentin can cause drowsiness, do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you
.
Side effects: All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. Do not
be alarmed by it, because you may not even experience any of them. You may need medical attention if you get some of the side effects. For gabapentin, It can be difficult to tell whether the side effects are the result of taking this medicine; or side effects from other medicines you may be taking, or it is actually from your own condition; so it is important to tell your doctor of any change in your condition. If you are over 65 years old, you may have an increased chance of getting side effects.
Side effects information can be obtained from the leaflet that your pharmacist gives you. Here, I would like to draw attention to a few side effects, which if you experience it, you need to contact your doctor as soon as possible.
- weakness, unsteadiness when walking including falling, reduced coordination or slowed reactions
- unusual changes in mood or behaviour such as restlessness, nervousness, or excitement
- signs of new onset of, or increased irritability or agitation
- signs of depression
- seeing or hearing things that are not there, irrational thinking
- blurred or double vision, uncontrollable jerky eye movements, or difficulty seeing
- signs of frequent infections such as fever, severe chills, sore throat or mouth ulcers
- trouble breathing or shallow breaths
- loss of consciousness.
Send yourself to the hospital, if you have
- an anaphylactic reaction
- more frequent or more severe seizures or fits
- chest pain or a very fast heart rate
Side effects information is there for your reference, so you know what to do if you experience it. It is not there to scare you or to stop you from getting appropriate treatment.

Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses Gabapentin (neurontin) and its mechanism of action. He discusses its FDA approved indications including partial seizures, post-herpetic neuralgia, neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia and alcohol dependence and some off-label uses (such as the treatment of anxiety, and alcohol withdrawal). Gabapentin (Neurontin) is a controlled medication in some states, and does have abuse potential (albeit, it is thought of as having less abuse potential than benzodiazepines or other pain medications like opiates). As this medication has various side effects (including abuse potential) it must be taken under the direction and supervision of a medical provider.
Dr. Pagnani is the founder and medical director of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates, an Instructor at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for the Department of Psychiatry, he supervises psychiatric residents at Jefferson Hospital, he serves on the Young Professional Board of Uplift, the Center for Grieving Children and he maintains a private practice of Psychiatry in Philadelphia where he sees patients for one-time psychiatric evaluations and second opinions. He is a licensed physician and surgeon in NJ, PA, NY, MD, DE, FL and CA and can provide consultations to individuals via HIPAA compliant Telehealth visits living in these locations.
Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates is a private practice of psychiatry consisting of about 25 psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychotherapists with physical locations in Philadelphia and Paoli, PA and serving all of PA, NJ, NY and FL virtually via HIPAA compliant tele-psychiatry. Individuals seeking not only evaluations but long-term psychiatric care, can contact Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates directly.
These videos aim to increase awareness and discussion of mental health topics and to encourage struggling individuals to schedule an appointment directly with a mental health provider. Mental health needs to be normalized, and simply speaking about mental health topics openly, is an important first step.
Dr. Pagnani and Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates are NOT advocating for or against the use of any mentioned psychiatric medications for any specific individual. Additionally, any side effects mentioned are not a complete list of potential side effects or contraindications to taking any mentioned medications, and all risks and benefits of a medication should be discussed with an individual’s provider at an appointment, before starting, stopping or making changes to a medication regimen.

What is Gabapentin (Neurontin) Used For? | What are the Side Effects of Gabapentin? – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings
Gabapentin, marketed under various brand names like Neurontin, is commonly prescribed to manage epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and restless leg syndrome (RLS). While its precise mechanism of action isn't entirely understood, it's believed to modulate calcium channels in the nervous system, reducing abnormal neuronal firing. Gabapentin usage entails various side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, peripheral edema, gastrointestinal disturbances, weight gain, mood changes, muscle tremors, and allergic reactions, and it's been associated with an increased risk of suicidal thoughts. Dosage varies depending on the condition being treated and patient factors, and precautions include monitoring for mood changes, being cautious of drug interactions, gradual tapering to prevent withdrawal symptoms, adjusting dosage for renal impairment, and avoiding use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Users should be vigilant about these warnings to ensure safe usage.

Gabapentin is approved by the FDA for three specific indications to prevent and control partial seizures, relieve nerve pain following shingles (post herpetic neuralgia), and to treat moderate to severe restless leg syndrome. Unfortunately, less than 1% of the prescriptions written for gabapentin are for the above listed FDA approvals. In fact, much of the off-label prescribing of gabapentin is done for the treatment of psychiatric and substance use disorders.

Before using Narcan, review the instructions provided with the medication. Review the following steps on how to use Narcan nasal spray.
* Step 1: Check for a suspected overdose by yelling “wake up” and gently shaking the person. If the person does not wake up, proceed to step 2.
* Step 2: Hold the Narcan nasal spray device with your thumb on the bottom of the plunger, and insert the nozzle into either nostril of the person suspected to have overdosed. Press the plunger firmly to give the first dose. Remember, each Narcan device contains only one dose.
* Step 3: Call 911 immediately after giving the first dose of Narcan.
* Step 4: Wait 2-3 minutes. If the person wakes up, stay with them until medical help arrives. If they do not wake up or become sleepy again, give Narcan every 2-3 minutes until they wake up.

Professor of Oncology, Angus Dalgleish gives vital information on a repurposed drug he uses for his cancer patients, given at a very low dose. This is Low Dose Naltrexone.
Check out the LDN trust website for much more, https://ldnresearchtrust.org
Naltrexone at low doses (LDN) and its relevance to cancer therapy
https://openaccess.sgul.ac.uk/id/eprint/114135/
Naltrexone was designed to inhibit opioid receptors without activating them and hence used to block the stimulatory effects of morphine and heroin. It was noted that in certain patients being treated with naltrexone for an opioid addiction many reported significant secondary benefit when being weaned off naltrexone. This group of patients had chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions and reported improvements whilst using the lower dosages of naltrexone. There have also been recent anecdotal reports of cancer resolution following the use of low doses of naltrexone (LDN). However, the mechanism of action is unclear.
Areas covered
We review three mechanisms through which LDN can influence cancer progression; namely, (a) antagonism of receptors to which LDN binds, which include toll-like receptors 7–9 that lead to IL-6 suppression b) modulation of immune function in patients; and c) direct inhibition of signaling pathways involved in cancer cell control, including the priming of pro-apoptotic pathways.
Expert opinion
Considering the increase in the number of anecdotal reports of activity, there will likely be a bigger drive toward using LDN in the oncological setting. These reports support clinical trials of LDN in cancer, especially when given in combination with certain chemotherapy.

Could the cure for drinking be just a pill? It's called Naltrexone, and it works by blocking endorphins and limiting euphoria after drinking.
Naltrexone was originally designed for people with severe alcohol dependence, but a new study found success among more casual drinkers who binge every now and then. The study, which was conducted by the American Journal of Psychiatry involved 120 men. Those who took the pill didn't drink as much and didn't have the same cravings as those who took placebos. The results lasted for six months after treatment.
Ironically, a common side effect to Naltrexone is nausea.

People often wonder if naltrexone blocks all the pleasure activities that produce endorphins - and not only alcohol related endorphins. In this video, Dr. Mendelson speaks about naltrexone and how it impacts endorphins, serotonin, and mood when someone is using the medication for alcohol addiction, or alcohol use disorder (AUD). Dr. Mendelson explains how endorphins from alcohol are different than endorphins from other activities.

(29 Apr 2016) Prince's final days and unexpected death at age 57 raise questions among experts familiar with prescription painkiller overdoses.
It's possible the innovative musician's demise represents one of the most public tragedies in an overdose crisis now gripping America.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday that investigators are looking into whether Prince died from an overdose and whether a doctor was prescribing him drugs in the weeks before he was found dead at his home in suburban Minneapolis. The law enforcement official has been briefed on the investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Whether Prince was addicted to painkillers is uncertain, but some are wondering whether the stigma surrounding addiction may have prevented Prince — who built a reputation as a sober superstar — from seeking help if he was becoming dependent.
Questions about Prince's health surfaced April 15, when his private plane made an emergency stop in Moline, Illinois. He was found unconscious aboard the aircraft, according to a law enforcement official who was briefed on the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
While the plane was on the tarmac, the person said, first-responders gave Prince a shot of Narcan, an antidote that is used to reverse suspected opioid overdoses. Opioids include oxycodone, Percocet, morphine, codeine and heroin.
