OTC: NSAIDs
OTC: NSAIDs Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Headaches, body pains, and swelling can all be caused by inflammation in the body. Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs, or NSAIDs, can be purchased over the counter to relieve inflammation and pain. Today I will tell you about OTC NSAID medications like ibuprofen and naproxen.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to provide pain relief and reduce inflammation. Ibuprofen is the NSAID in several over the counter products like Motrin, Advil, and Pamprin. Naproxen is the active ingredient in Aleve immediate release and extended release products. They are both ingredients in many combination medications. Liquid formulations are available for children who cannot swallow pills. Always follow the directions on the package and talk to your pharmacist to make sure you give your child the correct dose.

Ibuprofen comes in 200 mg tablets. When using this strength, you usually take 1 to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 16 tablets in one day.

Naproxen is also available in 200 mg tablets. Usually you take 1 tablet every 8 to 12 hours. Do not take more than 3 tablets in one day.

Take NSAIDs with a snack or milk to avoid an upset stomach. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking NSAIDs. The most common side effects are stomach upset, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.

Do not take these medications if you are allergic to NSAIDs or any other ingredient.

Talk to your pharmacist before taking an NSAID if you have any stomach or intestine conditions, are pregnant, or take any other medications (including other OTCs).

Always follow the instructions on the package unless instructed otherwise. Do not take more of an NSAID than instructed by the package or a healthcare professional.

Call your pharmacist or doctor right away if you have unusual bleeding or bruising, high blood pressure, weakness, dizziness, chest pain, swelling, or skin reactions while taking an NSAID.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen are used to relieve pain and inflammation. Talk to your pharmacist to make sure that you have an appropriate medication and dose. They are there to help you find the best over the counter medication for you!

Does morphine hasten death? | End-of-life myths explained (Updated video)
Does morphine hasten death? | End-of-life myths explained (Updated video) Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

You might have heard that giving morphine leads to a quicker death. Dr. Paulien Moyaert busts one of the most popular myths about morphine. She explains the mechanism of action of morphine, its clinical applications and why morphine does not hasten death at the end of life.

Timecodes:
0:00 Why would you need morphine?
0:10 How does morphine work?
0:16 Does it hasten death?
0:32 Correlation/Causation
0:39 Does it make a person live longer?
1:02 The end

Morphine is a potent painkiller that is frequently used in hospice care. It is also given to ease the feeling of shortness of breath. Morphine relaxes the muscles in the airways and increases the airflow to the lungs.

You might have heard that giving morphine leads to a quicker death. However, there is absolutely no evidence that opioids such as morphine speed up the dying process. Part of this misconception is sourced from experiences in which death was immediately preceded by a dose of morphine. It is important to remember that correlation does not imply causation. In fact, research shows that using morphine near the end of life may help a person live a bit longer. This extension is because it can be exhausting to experience pain and trouble breathing, and people nearing the end of life have limited strength and energy. So, it makes sense that treating these symptoms might slow down the rate of decline, if only for a few hours.

Morphine Side Effects and Mechanism of Action | Opioid Analgesics

In this video, you'll learn the side effects of morphine and morphine's mechanism of action. This is a super simple way to learn pharmacology faster and easier in nursing school.

So don't worry friend, you don't need to figure everything out alone anymore for nursing school. We're here to help you every step of the way.

The mechanism of action of morphine is that it binds to opioid receptors in the central nervous system, causing the central nervous system to become depressed. That CNS depression leads to less sensation and neurotransmitters, transmitting pain to the body and a decreased perception of pain. Morphine also releases histamine throughout the body.

Morphine's therapeutic effect is pain relief and it also causes blood vessels to dilate (also known as vasodilation) because of the CNS depression and general relaxation that occurs from it.

Knowing this mechanism of action, let's walk through the side effects of morphine in this video!

Psychiatric side effects of Montelukast, Singulair
Psychiatric side effects of Montelukast, Singulair Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Psychiatric side effects of Montelukast, Singulair

Montelukast is the generic name for a medicine that's also sold under the brand name Singulair. It's usually prescribed to treat asthma. It can also be prescribed to treat allergies.

Shortly after montelukast entered clinical practice, I started getting calls and messages -- usually from parents -- about the new onset of mood changes, suicidal ideas, or psychosis in people who took this medication.

Last spring (March, 2020), the FDA required a boxed warning be added to the montelukast (Singulair) prescribing information. (Boxed warnings are the most prominent form of warning in the FDA safety communication system).

The most likely explanation for the psychiatric side effect potential of montelukast (Singulair) lies in its unique mechanism of action. The drug prevents the conversion of an omega-6 fatty acid (arachidonic acid) into a signaling molecule known as leukotriene. Leukotrienes are inflammation molecules. So blocking their formation can be a good way to treat asthma.
But in blocking the path from arachidonic acid to leukotriene, the arachidonic acid is probably pushed into other pathways (like the prostaglandin pathway) whose products can interact with neurotransmitters that influence mood and behavior.

In this video, Dr. Sara Dugan reviews the psychiatric side effects of montelukast.

This lecture was given at the January 12, 2021 meeting of the SZconsult learning community.

SZconsult is a free consultation + education service offered by Northeast Ohio Medical University. It’s open to any clinician who wants to learn more about schizophrenia-spectrum illness, or who wants to tap into the collective wisdom of the learning community to find answers to clinical problems.

Are meloxicam and naproxen the same?
Are meloxicam and naproxen the same? Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

No, meloxicam and naproxen are not the same medications. While both meloxicam and naproxen belong to the same class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), they have some important differences.
Mechanism of Action: Meloxicam and naproxen work by inhibiting the production of certain enzymes called cyclooxygenases (COX). Meloxicam primarily inhibits COX-2, which is responsible for inflammation and pain, while naproxen inhibits both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes.

Duration of Action: Meloxicam has a longer half-life compared to naproxen, which means it stays active in the body for a longer period of time. This allows for less frequent dosing of meloxicam, usually once daily, while naproxen is typically taken multiple times a day.

Prescribed Uses: Meloxicam is commonly prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation associated with conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Naproxen is also used for the same conditions, but it is also prescribed for other types of pain, such as menstrual cramps and headaches.

Side Effects: Both meloxicam and naproxen can cause similar side effects, including stomach upset, heartburn, and increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. However, meloxicam has been associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, compared to naproxen.

It is important to note that both meloxicam and naproxen are prescription medications, and you should always consult with a healthcare professional before starting or changing any medication regimen.

MiraLAx Gentle Constipation Relief Laxative Power review, Miralax for what, miralax FAQ
MiraLAx Gentle Constipation Relief Laxative Power review, Miralax for what, miralax FAQ Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

We answer the 16 most frequently asked questions about MiraLax, if you want to know how MiraLax works, how to use it, how to apply it, here we solve all your doubts.

What is MiraLAX made of?

MiraLAX is a laxative that contains only one ingredient, polyethylene glycol (PEG 3350). It works in a unique way – preventing and relieving occasional constipation by attracting more water into your colon and keeping it there. This natural action hydrates and softens the stool which makes bowel movement easier.

Is MiraLAX gluten-free?

Yes, MiraLAX is gluten-free, sugar-free and preservative-free.

What’s the best way to treat constipation?

First look at making changes to your diet and lifestyle. Increase the amount of fiber in your meals every day – but do this gradually as consuming too much, too quickly, can cause bloating, gas and discomfort. Stay hydrated and try to exercise regularly to boost digestion and reduce stress.

What are osmotic laxatives?

As their name suggests, osmotic laxatives work by osmosis – naturally attracting water molecules from the body into the bowel. This hydrates and softens the stools, making them easier to pass. Stimulant laxatives work in a much harsher way, by forcefully stimulating the nerves in the colon, which can cause cramps and stomach discomfort.

What are laxatives?

Laxatives are a type of medicine that helps relieve constipation. If adding more fiber to your diet, drinking plenty of liquids, and being more physically active aren’t getting things moving on the inside, you may want to consider laxatives.

What causes constipation?

Constipation can be caused by various reasons. The most common are being dehydrated, and not consuming enough fiber (found in foods such as whole-grain cereals, vegetables, nuts and fruits). Pregnancy and certain medications can also make you less regular, along with not exercising, and sitting or lying down for long periods.

Can you take MiraLAX while pregnant?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor before using MiraLAX.

Should I use MiraLAX if it's short-listed or expired?

It is not recommended to use MiraLAX beyond the labeled expiration date.

Is MiraLAX safe?

MiraLAX works naturally with the water in your body to hydrate, soften and ease — unblocking your system without harsh side effects. If you are taking a prescription drug, you should ask a doctor or pharmacist before use

What are the side effects of MiraLAX?

MiraLAX does not cause harsh side effects such as gas, bloating, cramping or sudden urgency, only gentle, predictable relief from occasional constipation. When using this product, you may have loose, watery or more frequent stools.

When is the best time to take MiraLAX?

You can take MiraLAX at any time – AM or PM. Begin your treatment at the first signs of constipation and continue taking for up to seven days, until you experience relief.

How long does it take for MiraLAX to work?

MiraLAX generally produces a bowel movement in one to three days. Because it works naturally with the water in your body without causing harsh side effects, you do not need to worry about sudden urgency.

Can you take MiraLAX more than once a day?

MiraLAX is intended to be taken once a day. Talk to your doctor before taking MiraLAX more than once per day.

Can you take MiraLAX every day?

Do not use MiraLAX more than seven days. If you need to use a laxative for longer than one week, stop use and consult your doctor.

How much MiraLAX can you take?

Adults and children ages 17 and older should take 17 grams of powder once a day. Use the MiraLAX bottle top to measure 17g by filling to the indicated line (white section in cap). Mix and dissolve into 4-8 ounces of any beverage (hot, cold or room temperature). Single-dose packets of MiraLAX are also available.

What is the best time of day to take MiraLAX?

There is no recommended time of day to take MiraLAX. Begin taking MiraLAX at the first signs of constipation and continue taking until you experience relief (up to seven days).
