How to use Oxazepam? (Serax, Seresta) - Doctor Explains Side Effects 1 Views • 3 months ago

Generic name: Oxazepam.
Brand names: Serax and Seresta.
Available as regular tablets.

How to use it?
Swallow the tablets with half a glass of water.

Duration of use?
It is often discouraged to use Oxazepam for more than 2 months straight. As this can increase your risk for becoming dependent on this drug. Which means that you will get withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking it.

When to use it?
Oxazepam is part of a group of drugs called Benzodiazepine. It can be used to decrease symptoms of several anxiety disorders, stress disorder, severe sleep disorders, insomnia, acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms and psychosis.

What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms.Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.

When treating severe anxiety or stress in Adults or children older than 12 years: your doctor might commonly prescribe a dose of 10mg 3-4x/day. In severe cases this can be slowly increased to about 100-300 mg/day.
When treating a severe sleeping disorder in adults, your doctor might prescribe a dose of 15-50mg, which should be taken 1-2 hours before going to bed.
Lastly, when treating alcohol withdrawal symptoms in Adults your doctor might prescribe a dose of 10-20mg 3-4x/day for max. 1 week.

What are common the side-effects?
Common (1-10%): somnolence, decreased alertness, confusion, fatigue, headache, dizziness, double vision and muscle weakness
Uncommon (0.1-1%): increased appetite, weight gain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing and decreased libido.
Rare (0.01-0.1%): forgetfulness and various serious skin lesions.

Safety:
First of all be careful to combine Oxazepam with alcohol. As this might increase it’s side effects.
In addition, it can be dangerous to drive while using this drug. As it can cause you to become drowsy, sleepy and/or dizzy. If you experiencing any of these side effects then please do not drive.
Furthermore, oxazepam can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.

Pregnancy and Lactation:
Research shows that occasional use of oxazepam in low doses could be safe. This is true for pregnant woman and woman which are breastfeeding. However, there are some exceptions. Therefore always discuss this with your personal doctor.
