This video dives into why it’s essential to follow specific guidelines—even during a short six-day course of steroids like prednisone or Medrol. It explains how simple choices, like avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and sugary foods, can make a big difference in reducing side effects and improving the effectiveness of the medication. The video also shares a powerful real-life story that highlights the serious risks associated with ignoring these precautions, including increased chances of fractures, infections, and other complications. Viewers will come away with practical tips on how to support their body and stay safe during steroid treatment.
Key Takeaways:
1. Adherence to Guidelines: Following clear guidelines—even during a brief steroid course—helps maximize benefits and minimize side effects.
2. Avoid Harmful Substances: Steering clear of alcohol, caffeine, and sugar is crucial while on steroids to support better outcomes.
3. Increased Health Risks: Even short-term steroid use can elevate the risk of fractures, pneumonia, and sepsis, making caution especially important.
4. Personal Anecdote: A real-life example of binge drinking after steroids shows how serious the consequences can be when precautions aren’t followed.
5. Supportive Approach: The best way to get through steroid treatment is by fueling the body with healthy, nutritious foods and avoiding substances that can worsen side effects.

This video provides detailed information about the Medrol dose pack, a medication containing methylprednisolone in 4 mg tablet form, used for treating various inflammatory conditions such as skin rashes, arthritis, and asthma. It addresses the confusion surrounding the administration instructions, emphasizing the importance of taking the entire daily dose at once, preferably in the morning, to avoid side effects like insomnia. This clarifies that all pills in the pack are identical, regardless of design variations, and can be taken in any orientation without affecting their efficacy. This outlines the tapering dosing regimen over six days and advises on managing side effects, suggesting a checklist related to prednisone for guidance.
Key Takeaways:
1. Medication Purpose: The Medrol dose pack contains methylprednisolone, a 4 mg tablet used to treat inflammatory conditions such as skin rashes, arthritis, and asthma.
2. Administration Instructions: Despite conflicting guidance on the packaging, it is crucial to take the entire daily dose at once, preferably in the morning, to avoid side effects like insomnia.
3. Pill Orientation: All pills in the Medrol dose pack are identical, containing 4 mg of methylprednisolone, and can be taken in any orientation (vertically or horizontally) without affecting their efficacy.
4. Tapering Dosing Regimen: The dosing schedule involves a tapering method over six days, starting with six pills on the first day and decreasing by one pill each day until no pills are taken on the seventh day.
5. Managing Side Effects: Patients are advised to use a checklist related to prednisone to manage side effects, as methylprednisolone and prednisone share structural similarities and common side effects.

- What is Memantine 10mg (Namenda)?
- Memantine is N-Methyl-D-Aspartate receptor antagonist. Continuous activation of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the central nervous system caused by glutamate is thought to cause some of the Alzheimer's disease symptoms.
This overactivation is thought to contribute to neurotoxicity due to the excitatory properties of glutamate.
So Memantine acts by blocking the NMDA receptor, and limiting calcium influx into the neuron, such that toxic intracellular levels are not achieved.
- It is used for moderate-to-severe Alzheimer’s dementia.

Memantine is a NMDA antagonist that goes by the brand name Namenda. There are also titration packs available in the name brand. Memantine treats but does not cure confusion and dementia associated to Alzheimer’s disease. There are multiple dosage forms being a capsule, solution, and tablet. Special considerations are for patients with renal and hepatic impairment. Memantine does appear to have higher exposure in women than men. The main side effects are weight gain, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea and vomiting. A serious side effect is Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Two main types of drugs that interact with Namenda are alkalinizing agents and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Memantine treats but does not cure confusion and dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. There are multiple dosage forms being a capsule, solution, and tablet. Special considerations are for patients with renal and hepatic impairment. Memantine does appear to have higher exposure in women than men. Memantine is proposed to work on the glutamate receptor blocking the receptor much like magnesium does under “normal” conditions. This drug has a long elimination half-life between 60-80 hours. The main side effects are weight gain, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea and vomiting. A serious side effect is Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Two main types of drugs that interact with Namenda are alkalinizing agents and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. The drug can be taken with or without food and if a dose is missed it should not be doubled on the next dose. The missed dose should be skipped and resumed regularly.
