Pregabalin (Lyrica): What You Need To Know
Pregabalin (Lyrica): What You Need To Know Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

Pregabalin (Lyrica) is a medication in the gabapentinoid class. It has anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, and analgesic properties. As such, it's used for epilepsy, neuropathic pain, anxiety, and other conditions.

Despite being a GABA derivative, it doesn't appear to be operating through a GABA-related mechanism.

The substance is also used recreationally due to its euphoric, anxiolytic, and pro-social effects.

Full article at: https://theanxiousresistance.c....om/lyrica-for-anxiet

Lyrica (Pregabalin) hit the US market in 2004. It was developed to be a successor to the popular medication Gabapentin. It has been well established for decades that Gabapentin can successfully treat anxiety disorders but is Lyrica just as effective as Gabapentin. In this video I discuss what the evidence says and how this might be a reasonable option for you to discuss with your doctor.

How Should Lyrica® (pregabalin) be Dosed for the Treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)?
How Should Lyrica® (pregabalin) be Dosed for the Treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)? Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

Pregabalin (Lyrica®) is one of only four strongly recommended treatments in the 2024 AASM Guidelines for the treatment of restless legs syndrome (RLS). @andyberkowskimd of ReLACS Health describes how pregabalin can be started and dosed for the treatment of this condition.

Among the topics discussed:
- How pregabalin works for RLS symptoms
- The timing and duration of pregabalin for relief
- Typical dosing range for RLS
- Avoiding the adverse effects of Lyrica and combinations with other drugs
- Pregabalin as a Schedule V controlled substance by the DEA

For background on pregabalin in the treatment of RLS, watch this video:
https://youtu.be/rGpzmFOQzSk

Pregabalin is one of three medications in the class of seizure drugs known as alpha-2-delta ligands along with its cousins gabapentin (Neurontin®) and gabapentin enarcarbil (Horizant®) that are three of the strongly recommended treatments for RLS (along with intravenous iron).

You can find links to video, audio, and the text of the 2024 Clinical Practice Guidelines by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine at the ReLACS Health website here:

This video articulates the gist of the following: Pregabalin (Lyrica) treats pain caused by nerve damage and can be used with other medications to prevent seizures. Pregabalin capsules, oral solution (liquid), and extended-release (long-acting) tablets are used to relieve neuropathic pain (pain from damaged nerves) that can occur in your arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet, or toes if you have diabetes and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN; the burning, stabbing pain or aches that may last for months or years after an attack of shingles). Pregabalin capsules and oral solution are also used to relieve neuropathic pain that can occur after a spinal cord injury and to treat fibromyalgia (a long-lasting condition that may cause pain, muscle stiffness and tenderness, tiredness, and difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep). Pregabalin capsules and oral solution are used along with other medications to treat certain types of seizures. Pregabalin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing the number of pain signals that are sent out by damaged nerves in the body. Pregabalin was FDA approved in 2004 as an anti-epileptic & anticonvulsant. It slows down impulses in the brain that cause seizures. Pregabalin also affects chemicals in the brain that send pain signals across the nervous system. Pregabalin is used to treat pain caused by fibromyalgia, or nerve pain in people with diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), herpes zoster (post-herpetic neuralgia), or spinal cord injury. Pregabalin is also used with other medications to treat partial-onset seizures in adults and children aged at least 1 month. Pregabalin can cause a severe allergic reaction. Stop taking pregabalin and seek emergency medical help if you have hives or blisters on your skin, trouble breathing, or swelling in your face, mouth or throat. Pregabalin is used with other medicines to help control partial-onset seizures (convulsions) in the treatment of epilepsy in patients 1 month of age and older. This medicine will not cure epilepsy and will only work to control seizures for as long as you continue to take it. Pregabalin is also used for postherpetic neuralgia (pain that occurs after shingles) and pain caused by nerve damage from diabetes or a spinal cord injury. Pregabalin capsule and oral liquid are also used to treat a condition called fibromyalgia (muscle pain and stiffness). Pregabalin works in the central nervous system (CNS) to control seizures and pain. It is an anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain agent. Pregabalin is approved by the United States FDA to treat neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord injury, and postherpetic neuralgia. Pregabalin is FDA-approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Pregabalin also has FDA approval as adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults with epilepsy.

I am awful at vlogging but started a channel here on youtube to connect with others that live and struggle with all types of "invisible" diseases..diagnosed or not. Everything from chronic pain to mental illnesses. I want to help remind all Spoonies that they are not alone and I'm here to be a friend. I share videos of my family, life tips to all sorts of different topics. My channel is a lot like my life...unorganized and all over the place but filled with love and great intentions! Not your normal, gorgeous, perfect YouTuber

WHAT IS A SPOONIE?? “The Spoon Theory” a personal story made by Christine Miserandino, is popular among many people dealing with chronic illness. It describes perfectly this idea of limited energy, using “spoons” as a unit of energy. Because majority of my content is related to chronic illnesses I like to refer my family here as my spoonies XOXOXO

Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid) – Uses, Side Effects, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings
Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) is a nitrofuran-class antibiotic used primarily for treating uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus. It is not effective for systemic infections or pyelonephritis due to poor tissue penetration. Nitrofurantoin works by disrupting bacterial enzymes critical for protein, DNA, RNA, and cell wall synthesis, reducing resistance development. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, while serious risks include pulmonary toxicity, peripheral neuropathy, and hemolytic anemia in G6PD-deficient patients. Typical dosages include 100 mg twice daily for 5–7 days for UTIs and 50–100 mg once daily for prophylaxis. Renal impairment, pregnancy near term, and chronic use require caution due to increased toxicity risks. Interactions with antacids, probenecid, and live bacterial vaccines can reduce effectiveness or increase side effects.

Nitrofurantoin or Macrobid, Macrodantin Information (dosing, side effects, patient counseling)
Nitrofurantoin or Macrobid, Macrodantin Information (dosing, side effects, patient counseling) Side Effects 0 Views • 1 month ago

Nitrofurantoin is also known by the brand names: Macrobid and Macrodantin.

Nitrofurantoin comes in 100 mg capsules as monohydrate/macrocrystals and 25, 50, and 100 mg capsules as macrocrystals.

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic most commonly used to treat bladder infections. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, nitrofurantoin is usually taken by mouth with food most twice a day. Drinks lots of non-caffeinated liquids unless told otherwise by your doctor. Do not take antacids that have magnesium trisilicate in them while taking nitrofurantoin. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.

Some common side effects with nitrofurantoin include dark orange to brown colored urine (this is normal), and upset stomach.
Some less common side effects include headache, tiredness, dizziness, and loose stools.
(Flash on screen this is not a complete list of side effects)

While taking nitrofurantoin, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
• Signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, tightness of the chest, etc.)
• An allergy to nitrofurantoin.
• Have kidney disease.
• Have trouble passing urine.
• Are more than 38 weeks pregnant.

All forms of nitrofurantoin including the liquid needs to be stored at room temperature in a dry place. Store the oral liquid in the original container, protect from light and shake well before each dose is given. Use the measuring device received from the pharmacist or doctor for the oral liquid. Discard any unused oral liquid after 30 days.

Thank you for watching and remember to tell your doctor and pharmacist about your health problems, all drugs including over the counter drugs, natural products, and vitamins for your safety before starting a new drug. Do not stop, start, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

80% of urine infections are caused by one thing
80% of urine infections are caused by one thing Side Effects 0 Views • 1 month ago

Urine infections are incredibly common.
So common that more than one of my patients asked me to do a video on this topic!

Anyone can get urine infections but they're most common in women with most women experiencing one in their lifetime.

The symptoms of a urinary infection (or UTI) are usually pretty obvious - peeing more than usual and with "urgency", burning and stinging when you pee and sometimes tummy pain or blood in the urine.

There are a few things that increase the risk of UTIs, like pregnancy, menopause and diabetes but either way, they're usually straightforward to spot and can be managed remotely most of the time.

Some UTIs improve with time and no treatment other than water and rest but most need antibiotics as bacteria is the usual culprit. Other over the counter treatments and home remedies are not evidence based (ie there is not enough evidence to definitely recommend them) but most are safe to try if you want to give it a go.

UTIs improve quickly but if you notice that it doesnt, or you have new symptoms or feel unwell with the urinary symptoms, you need to see your doctor.
