Sandstone Care prescribes two FDA-approved drugs to treat opioid use disorder: buprenorphine (Suboxone and Subutex are common brands) and naltrexone (Vivitrol and Revia are common brands). These treatments have been demonstrated to be safe and effective in combination with counseling and psychosocial support. These medications either reduce the cravings or block the ability of the drug to create the “high” in the person’s brain.

Narcan Side Effects: Safeguarding Lives in Opioid Overdose Emergencies
Narcan Side Effects: Safeguarding Lives in Opioid Overdose Emergencies Side Effects 0 Views • 1 month ago

Narcan and its role in opioid overdose emergencies.
Narcan, or Naloxone, is a medication that works by binding to the same receptors in the brain that opioids attach to, effectively blocking their effects. When administered promptly during an opioid overdose, Narcan can reverse the symptoms, including slowed breathing and loss of consciousness, potentially saving a person's life.
One of the key reasons Narcan has become such a crucial tool is its ease of use. It can be administered through various routes, including intranasal sprays, auto-injectors, and intramuscular injections. This accessibility empowers not only healthcare professionals but also bystanders and family members to intervene in an overdose emergency.
It is important to note that Narcan is not a substitute for professional medical care. While it can reverse an overdose temporarily, individuals who receive Narcan should still seek immediate medical attention to address the underlying causes of the overdose and prevent future incidents.
Common side effects of Narcan.
Like any medication, Narcan does carry the risk of side effects. However, it is important to remember that the potential benefits of using Narcan in an opioid overdose emergency far outweigh the risks of not intervening.
The most common side effects of Narcan include nausea, vomiting, and increased heart rate. These reactions are generally mild and short-lived, subsiding within a few minutes after administration. It is crucial to reassure the individual who has received Narcan about these side effects and ensure they understand that they are temporary and necessary for their well-being.
In some cases, individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms after Narcan administration. This occurs because Narcan rapidly reverses the effects of opioids, essentially sending the body into immediate withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms can range from mild discomfort, such as restlessness and muscle aches, to more severe manifestations like agitation and tremors. While withdrawal symptoms can be distressing, they are not life-threatening and should resolve within a short period.
Rare but serious side effects of Narcan.
While rare, there are some serious side effects associated with Narcan administration. These side effects require immediate medical attention to ensure the individual's safety and well-being.
One potentially severe side effect is pulmonary edema, which is the accumulation of fluid in the lungs. This can lead to difficulty breathing and chest pain. If an individual experiences these symptoms after receiving Narcan, it is crucial to seek medical help immediately.
Another rare but serious side effect is cardiovascular complications. Narcan can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure and heart rate, which may be problematic for individuals with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions. It is important for healthcare professionals and first responders to be aware of this possibility and monitor the individual closely after administering Narcan.
Managing and mitigating side effects of Narcan.
While the side effects of Narcan can be distressing, they are generally temporary and resolve on their own. However, there are steps that can be taken to manage and mitigate these side effects, ensuring the individual's comfort and well-being.
To alleviate nausea and vomiting, individuals can be placed in a side-lying position to prevent choking and aspiration. Providing a calm and supportive environment can also help reduce feelings of distress.
For individuals experiencing withdrawal symptoms, reassurance and understanding are essential. Educating them about the temporary nature of these symptoms and providing support can help alleviate anxiety and discomfort. In some cases, healthcare professionals may administer additional medications to manage severe withdrawal symptoms.
Tips for administering Narcan safely and effectively.
Administering Narcan correctly and promptly is crucial for its effectiveness in reversing an opioid overdose. Here are some tips to ensure Narcan is administered safely and effectively:.
Familiarize yourself with the specific administration method of Narcan you have available, whether it is an intranasal spray, auto-injector, or intramuscular injection. Read the instructions carefully and practice the technique if possible.

What are BETA BLOCKERS? How do they work? | Bisoprolol, Atenolol, Carvedilol, Metoprolol
What are BETA BLOCKERS? How do they work? | Bisoprolol, Atenolol, Carvedilol, Metoprolol Side Effects 0 Views • 1 month ago

How do beta blockers work and what do they do to your body? Well, this video is for you! Here's the explainer with the what, how, why, side effects, history and pharmacology (two advanced sections in the 2nd half).

There are lots of beta-blockers out there and they're really good for heart conditions and high blood pressure. They can also be used for glaucoma.

Common ones include bisoprolol, atenolol, labetalol, carvedilol, metoprolol, propranolol, sotalol. You might also know them by their brand names: Tenormin, Cardicor, Emcor, Betaloc, Lopressor, Nebilet, Angilol and Inderal.

As always we go through things in simple terms and then for the hardcore nerds we're into the complex stuff.

You'll learn about how these drugs act on the beta adrenoreceptors in your body - that's where adrenaline, noradrenaline (or epinephrine and norepinephrine) bind.

Unlocking the Benefits of Nebivolol: The Blood Pressure Medication You Need to Know
Unlocking the Benefits of Nebivolol: The Blood Pressure Medication You Need to Know Side Effects 0 Views • 1 month ago

High blood pressure is a common health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Fortunately, there are several medications available that can help manage blood pressure levels and reduce the risk of these complications. One such medication is Nebivolol, which has been gaining popularity among doctors and patients alike. In this video, we'll explore the many benefits of Nebivolol and how it can help people struggling with hypertension.
How Does Nebivolol Work?.
Nebivolol is a beta-blocker that works by slowing down the heart rate and reducing the workload on the heart. This leads to a decrease in blood pressure levels. Unlike other beta-blockers, Nebivolol also has a unique mechanism of action that involves stimulating the production of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide is a naturally occurring molecule that helps to dilate blood vessels and improve blood flow. By increasing the production of nitric oxide, Nebivolol can help to relax blood vessels and further lower blood pressure levels.
Nebivolol is available in tablet form and is usually taken once a day. It's important to take Nebivolol exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking Nebivolol without first consulting your doctor, as suddenly stopping this medication can lead to serious complications.
Benefits of Nebivolol for Blood Pressure Management.
Nebivolol is highly effective in lowering blood pressure levels, with studies showing that it can reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In addition to its blood pressure-lowering effects, Nebivolol has several other benefits for people with hypertension.
Improves Heart Health.
By reducing the workload on the heart, Nebivolol can help to improve heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease. This medication has been shown to improve left ventricular function, which is an important measure of heart health. Nebivolol may also help to prevent the development of heart failure in people with hypertension.
Reduces Anxiety.
Hypertension can be a stressful condition, and many people with high blood pressure also suffer from anxiety. Nebivolol has been shown to have anxiolytic effects, meaning that it can help to reduce anxiety levels. This can be especially beneficial for people who experience anxiety-related symptoms such as palpitations, sweating, and tremors.
Enhances Overall Quality of Life.
Nebivolol can help to improve overall quality of life for people with hypertension. By lowering blood pressure levels and reducing the risk of complications, Nebivolol can help people to feel better and more in control of their health. This can lead to improvements in mood, energy levels, and overall well-being.
Nebivolol vs. other Blood Pressure Medications.
Nebivolol is just one of many medications available for the management of hypertension. So how does it compare to other blood pressure medications?
ACE Inhibitors.
ACE inhibitors are a class of medications that work by blocking the production of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. Like Nebivolol, ACE inhibitors can help to lower blood pressure levels and improve heart health. However, ACE inhibitors can cause side effects such as coughing, dizziness, and headaches. Nebivolol is generally better tolerated than ACE inhibitors and is less likely to cause these side effects.
Calcium Channel Blockers.
Calcium channel blockers are another class of medications that can help to lower blood pressure levels. They work by blocking the entry of calcium into the heart and blood vessels, which leads to relaxation of the blood vessels and a decrease in blood pressure. Calcium channel blockers can cause side effects such as constipation, dizziness, and headaches. Nebivolol is generally better tolerated than calcium channel blockers and is less likely to cause these side effects.

Side Effects of Nebivolol.
Like all medications, Nebivolol can cause side effects in some people. The most common side effects of Nebivolol include:.
Headache.
Fatigue.
Dizziness.
Nausea.
Insomnia.
These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own. However, if you experience any severe or persistent side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately.
