Allergy Medications Explained - Can You Take More Than One?
Allergy Medications Explained - Can You Take More Than One? Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

There are many allergy medications on the market which can make it bewildering for a patient to know what to get and whether it is safe to combine more than one type of allergy medication. This video will explain in hopefully a simple understandable way how an anti-histamine differs from a steroid nasal spray differs from all the rest.

To begin, a water balloon represents the mast cell inside a person’s body which is responsible for allergic reactions. To prevent an allergic reaction, you do NOT want the water inside the balloon from getting out. The water itself represents the chemicals including histamine that trigger an allergic reaction such as a sneeze, runny nose, itching, etc. Allergic substances like ragweed are symbolized by needles that are trying to pop the water balloon.

Keep in mind that the “science” has been grossly over-simplified for understandability.

5 HTP Benefits, Side Effects, and Precautions
5 HTP Benefits, Side Effects, and Precautions Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

5-HTP: Benefits, Side Effects, and Precautions
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a dietary supplement produced from the seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia plant. It is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in regulating mood, sleep, appetite, and other bodily functions.

Improved mood: 5-HTP may help boost serotonin levels in the brain, which could contribute to improved mood and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Enhanced sleep: 5-HTP may help regulate the sleep-wake cycle and improve sleep quality.
Reduced headaches: 5-HTP may help reduce tension headaches.
Potential Benefits of 5-HTP:

Decreased appetite: 5-HTP may help control appetite and support weight loss.
Potential Benefits of 5-HTP:

5-HTP is generally well-tolerated, but some side effects may occur, including:
Digestive: Heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
Nervous system: Drowsiness, dizziness, headache.
Sexual: Sexual dysfunction, decreased libido.
Musculoskeletal: Muscle pain, weakness.
Side Effects of 5-HTP:

The recommended dosage of 5-HTP typically ranges from 50-300 mg per day. It is advisable to start with a low dose and gradually increase it until the desired effect is achieved. However, long-term use of high doses of 5-HTP (above 400 mg per day) may be unsafe and could cause serious side effects.
Dosage and Usage:

Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome (EMS): Some individuals using 5-HTP have experienced EMS, a serious condition that causes muscle pain, fever, and elevated eosinophil count. The cause of EMS is unclear, but it may be related to impurities in some 5-HTP products.
Precautions:

Serotonin Syndrome: Combining 5-HTP with other medications can increase serotonin production and lead to serotonin syndrome, a dangerous condition that causes symptoms such as agitation, confusion, seizures, and even death.
Precautions:

Drug interactions: 5-HTP may interact with certain medications, including antidepressants, sedatives, and painkillers. Consult with your doctor before using 5-HTP if you are taking any medications.
Precautions:

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is not enough information about the safety of 5-HTP for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Consult with your doctor before using 5-HTP during these periods.
Precautions:

5-HTP may offer several potential health benefits, but it can also cause side effects. It is important to use 5-HTP with caution and consult with your doctor before using it, especially if you are taking medications or have any health concerns.

What is Abilify?

Abilify is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain.

Abilify is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions including schizophrenia in adults and children at least 13 years old.

Abilify is also used alone or with a mood stabilizer medicine to treat bipolar I disorder (manic depression) in adults and children at least 10 years old.

How should I take Abilify?

Take Abilify exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.

Abilify can be taken with or without food.

Swallow the regular tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it. Do not split the orally disintegrating tablet.

Measure liquid medicine carefully. Use the dosing syringe provided, or use a medicine dose-measuring device (not a kitchen spoon).

Remove an orally disintegrating tablet from the package only when you are ready to take the medicine. Place the tablet in your mouth and allow it to dissolve, without chewing. Swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If needed, you may drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet.

Your doctor will need to check your progress on a regular basis.

If you also use antidepressant medicine, do not stop using it suddenly or you could have unpleasant symptoms. Ask your doctor before stopping the antidepressant.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Abilify liquid may be used for up to 6 months after opening, but not after the expiration date on the medicine label.

Advair Diskus: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects, & How It Works

Advair Diskus is a widely prescribed inhaler used to treat and manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It combines two active ingredients, fluticasone (a corticosteroid) and salmeterol (a long-acting beta-agonist), to help control symptoms and prevent exacerbations of these respiratory conditions. By providing long-lasting relief, Advair Diskus helps patients maintain better control over their breathing and improve their overall quality of life. This article covers its uses, benefits, side effects, and how it works.

How Advair Diskus Works

Advair Diskus works by combining two powerful medications that target different aspects of respiratory disease:

1. Fluticasone (Corticosteroid): This component helps reduce inflammation in the airways, a critical factor in both asthma and COPD. Inflammation leads to airway swelling and mucus production, making breathing difficult. Fluticasone works by reducing inflammation over time, helping the airways remain clear and open.

2. Salmeterol (Long-Acting Beta-Agonist): Salmeterol relaxes the muscles around the airways, helping them stay open for an extended period. It provides bronchodilation, which improves airflow and prevents symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest. Salmeterol works for up to 12 hours, offering long-lasting relief from symptoms.

This combination of anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator effects makes Advair Diskus highly effective in preventing asthma attacks and managing COPD symptoms.

Uses of Advair Diskus

Advair Diskus is prescribed for:

1. Asthma: It is used as a maintenance treatment to prevent asthma attacks and control symptoms in patients 4 years and older. It is not meant for immediate relief of acute asthma attacks but helps reduce the frequency and severity of flare-ups.

2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): For adults with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, Advair Diskus helps prevent exacerbations, improve lung function, and reduce the need for rescue inhalers.

Benefits of Advair Diskus

1. Effective Symptom Control: Advair Diskus helps manage chronic asthma and COPD symptoms by keeping the airways open and reducing inflammation. This results in fewer respiratory symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.

2. Prevention of Exacerbations: By using Advair Diskus regularly, patients with asthma or COPD can reduce the risk of severe exacerbations, which may require hospitalization or emergency treatment.

3. Long-Lasting Relief: Salmeterol provides up to 12 hours of bronchodilation, allowing patients to breathe easier throughout the day and night. This long-acting effect also reduces the need for frequent use of rescue inhalers.

4. Improved Quality of Life: Consistent use of Advair Diskus can significantly improve a patient’s ability to perform daily activities, exercise, and sleep better due to fewer breathing problems.

Side Effects of Advair Diskus

While Advair Diskus is generally safe and effective, some patients may experience side effects, including:

1. Oral Thrush: Due to the corticosteroid component, some patients may develop a fungal infection in the mouth known as oral thrush. Rinsing the mouth with water after each use can help prevent this condition.

2. Hoarseness or Throat Irritation: Inhaled corticosteroids can cause irritation or a sore throat. This side effect is typically mild and manageable.

3. Increased Heart Rate: The salmeterol component may cause an increase in heart rate or feelings of shakiness in some individuals, particularly when starting treatment.

4. Headaches: Some patients may experience mild headaches, especially during the initial treatment period.

5. Pneumonia in COPD Patients: There is an increased risk of pneumonia for patients with COPD using inhaled corticosteroids like Advair Diskus. Monitoring symptoms and regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are essential.

Conclusion

Advair Diskus is a powerful tool in managing chronic asthma and COPD by combining the benefits of a corticosteroid and a long-acting bronchodilator. It offers long-lasting relief from respiratory symptoms, reduces the risk of exacerbations, and improves overall quality of life. However, patients should be aware of potential side effects and use the inhaler as directed by their healthcare provider. Regular follow-up and proper inhaler techniques are key to maximizing its effectiveness and minimizing risks.

AndroGel | Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings
AndroGel is a testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) used to treat low testosterone levels in men, improving symptoms like fatigue, low libido, erectile dysfunction, and reduced muscle mass. It is applied topically and absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Common side effects include skin irritation, acne, sweating, hair thinning, and mood changes, while serious side effects may involve an enlarged prostate, blood clots, heart problems, liver issues, and sleep apnea. The gel works by restoring normal testosterone levels and is usually applied once daily at a starting dose of 50 mg, with potential adjustments. It can interact with medications like blood thinners, insulin, and corticosteroids. Precautions include avoiding skin contact with others to prevent accidental testosterone transfer, not using it in women, and being cautious for those with heart, liver, or prostate conditions. Regular monitoring of testosterone levels and prostate health is advised.

Explainer | How Does Aricept Work for Alzheimer’s? Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

While there is currently no treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, a drug called Aricept can temporarily ease the symptoms for a short period of time. Aricept, also known as Donezepil, does not slow down the progression of the disease in the brain, but it can slow down further decline in cognition, usually for around six months.

What is Aricept used for? Main uses, dosage recommendations, potential side effects, and user
What is Aricept used for? Main uses, dosage recommendations, potential side effects, and user Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Aricept, also known by its generic name donepezil, is a medication primarily used to treat symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. It falls under the category of cholinesterase inhibitors, which means it works by increasing the levels of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine in the brain. This neurotransmitter is involved in memory and cognition.

The main use of Aricept is to improve cognitive function and slow down the progression of symptoms in individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. It may help with memory, language, thinking, and overall daily functioning. It does not cure Alzheimer's disease or halt its progression, but it can provide some relief and improve quality of life for patients and their caregivers.

Dosage recommendations for Aricept may vary depending on the individual's age, weight, and overall health condition. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional or follow the prescribing physician's instructions for the appropriate dosage. Generally, the starting dose is 5 mg taken orally once a day, usually in the evening. After a few weeks, the dosage may be increased to 10 mg per day if tolerated well.

As with any medication, Aricept does come with potential side effects. Some common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, muscle cramps, fatigue, and insomnia. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, but it is important to notify a healthcare professional if they become severe or persistent.

It is worth mentioning that not everyone may experience side effects, and some individuals may have different reactions to the medication. It is essential to discuss any concerns or potential side effects with a healthcare professional before starting Aricept.

In conclusion, Aricept is primarily used to improve cognitive function and slow down the progression of symptoms in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. It is important to follow the recommended dosage, be aware of potential side effects, and consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and guidance.

Donepezil Pharmacology
Donepezil Pharmacology Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

On this episode I discuss the pharmacology of donepezil.

Donepezil is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. In dementia, that is a deficiency in acetylcholine and donepezil helps preserve this neurotransmitter.

Donepezil can cause weight loss, GI upset, and diarrhea. This is an important monitoring parameter in our dementia patients.

There is the possibility for donepezil to cause bradycardia and insomnia. Keep an eye out for these adverse effects as they can and do happen in real practice.

Anticholinergics are notorious for blunting the effects of donepezil. We must look out for drug interactions from older anticholinergics like diphenhydramine, amitriptyline, and hydroxyzine.

Austedo: Unleashing the Power of Medication for Tackling Movement Disorders.
Austedo: Unleashing the Power of Medication for Tackling Movement Disorders. Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Austedo is a medication that is used to treat the symptoms of movement disorders, such as Huntington's disease, tardive dyskinesia, and chorea associated with Huntington's disease. .The medication works by regulating the levels of a chemical called dopamine in the brain, which is responsible for controlling movement. Austedo works by inhibiting the VMAT2 protein, which is involved in the transport of dopamine in the brain. By inhibiting this protein, Austedo reduces the release of dopamine, which helps to control the involuntary movements associated with movement disorders.

See Important Safety Information below; Prescribing Information including Boxed Warning: https://bit.ly/3YhB0s9. AUSTEDO XR®/AUSTEDO® can cause depression, suicidal thoughts, or actions in patients with HD. Don’t use if you have liver problems; are taking reserpine, tetrabenazine, or valbenazine.
INDICATIONS & USAGE
AUSTEDO XR is indicated in adults for the treatment of chorea associated with Huntington's disease (HD) & for the treatment of tardive dyskinesia (TD).
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Depression & Suicidality in HD Patients: AUSTEDO XR can increase the risk of depression & suicidal thoughts & behavior (suicidality) in HD Patients. Balance the risks of depression & suicidality with the clinical need for treatment of chorea. Closely monitor patients for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior. Inform patients, their caregivers, & families of the risk of depression & suicidality & instruct them to report behaviors of concern promptly to the treating physician. Exercise caution when treating patients with a history of depression or prior suicide attempts or ideation. AUSTEDO XR is contraindicated in patients who are suicidal, & in patients with untreated or inadequately treated depression.
Contraindications: AUSTEDO XR is contraindicated in HD patients who are suicidal, or have untreated or inadequately treated depression. AUSTEDO XR is also contraindicated in: patients with hepatic impairment; patients taking reserpine or within 20 days of discontinuing reserpine; patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOI therapy; & patients taking tetrabenazine or valbenazine.
Clinical Worsening & Adverse Events in HD Patients: AUSTEDO XR may cause a worsening in mood, cognition, rigidity, & functional capacity. Prescribers should periodically re-evaluate the need for AUSTEDO XR in their patients by assessing the effect on chorea & possible adverse effects.
QTc Prolongation: AUSTEDO XR may prolong the QT interval, but the degree of QT prolongation is not clinically significant when AUSTEDO XR is administered within the recommended dosage range. AUSTEDO XR should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome & in patients with a history of cardiac arrhythmias.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), a potentially fatal symptom complex reported in association with drugs that reduce dopaminergic transmission, has been observed in patients receiving tetrabenazine. The risk may be increased by concomitant use of dopamine antagonists or antipsychotics. The management of NMS should include immediate discontinuation of AUSTEDO XR; intensive symptomatic treatment & medical monitoring; & treatment of any concomitant serious medical problems.
Akathisia, Agitation, & Restlessness: AUSTEDO XR may increase the risk of akathisia, agitation, & restlessness. The risk of akathisia may be increased by concomitant use of dopamine antagonists or antipsychotics. If a patient develops akathisia, the AUSTEDO XR dose should be reduced; some patients may require discontinuation of therapy.
Parkinsonism: AUSTEDO XR may cause parkinsonism in TD or HD patients. The risk of parkinsonism may be increased by concomitant use of dopamine antagonists or antipsychotics. If a patient develops parkinsonism, the AUSTEDO XR dose should be reduced; some patients may require discontinuation of therapy.
Sedation & Somnolence: Sedation is a common dose-limiting adverse reaction of AUSTEDO XR. Patients should not perform activities requiring mental alertness, such as operating a motor vehicle or hazardous machinery, until they are on a maintenance dose of AUSTEDO XR & know how the drug affects them. Concomitant use of alcohol or other sedating drugs may have additive effects & worsen sedation & somnolence.
Hyperprolactinemia: Tetrabenazine elevates serum prolactin concentrations in humans. If there is a clinical suspicion of symptomatic hyperprolactinemia, appropriate laboratory testing should be done & consideration should be given to discontinuation of AUSTEDO XR.
Binding to Melanin-Containing Tissues: Deutetrabenazine or its metabolites bind to melanin-containing tissues & could accumulate in these tissues over time. Prescribers should be aware of the possibility of long-term ophthalmologic effects.
Common Adverse Reactions: The most common adverse reactions for AUSTEDO (greater than 8% & greater than placebo) in a controlled clinical study in HD patients were somnolence, diarrhea, dry mouth, & fatigue. The most common adverse reactions for AUSTEDO (4% & greater than placebo) in controlled clinical studies in TD patients were nasopharyngitis & insomnia. Adverse reactions with AUSTEDO XR are expected to be similar to AUSTEDO.
