What is Divalproex used for? Primary conditions treated, dosage instructions, side effects
What is Divalproex used for? Primary conditions treated, dosage instructions, side effects Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

Divalproex, also known as sodium valproate, is primarily used to treat seizure disorders such as epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, which are sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain. Divalproex helps to stabilize these electrical impulses and reduce the frequency and severity of seizures.
In addition to epilepsy, Divalproex is also effective in managing manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings, including periods of mania characterized by elevated mood, increased energy, and impulsive behavior. Divalproex helps to stabilize mood and prevent the occurrence of manic episodes.
Furthermore, Divalproex is prescribed as a preventive medication for migraines. Migraines are severe headaches that can be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances. Divalproex helps to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines, providing relief for individuals who suffer from these debilitating headaches.
Dosage instructions for Divalproex.
The dosage of Divalproex varies depending on the condition being treated and individual patient factors. It is crucial to follow the prescribed guidelines provided by your healthcare professional. Typically, Divalproex is taken orally in the form of tablets or capsules.
For the treatment of epilepsy, the initial recommended dosage for adults is usually 10-15 mg/kg per day, divided into two or three doses. The dosage may be adjusted based on the individual's response and tolerability. For children, the dosage is based on their weight and age, and it is important to adhere to the specific instructions given by the doctor.
When used for the management of bipolar disorder, the initial recommended dosage for adults is usually 750 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. The dosage may be adjusted based on the individual's response and the desired therapeutic effect. It is important to regularly monitor blood levels of Divalproex to ensure the dosage is within the therapeutic range.
For the prevention of migraines, the initial recommended dosage for adults is usually 250 mg twice daily. The dosage may be increased to achieve the desired effect, but it should not exceed 1,000 mg per day. Regular monitoring and communication with your healthcare professional are important to ensure the optimal dosage is being administered.
Potential side effects of Divalproex.
Like any medication, Divalproex can cause side effects. However, it is important to note that not everyone experiences these side effects, and they tend to be manageable with proper medical guidance. Common side effects of Divalproex include:.
Nausea:. Some individuals may experience feelings of nausea, which can be alleviated by taking the medication with food or as directed by your healthcare professional.
Dizziness:. Divalproex can cause dizziness, especially when standing up quickly. It is important to take precautions and avoid activities that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you.
Drowsiness:. Divalproex may cause drowsiness, making it important to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects your level of alertness.
Hair loss:. In some cases, Divalproex may lead to temporary hair loss. This side effect is usually reversible once the medication is discontinued.
It is important to discuss any side effects with your healthcare professional, as they can provide guidance on managing or mitigating these effects. In some cases, adjusting the dosage or switching to an alternative medication may be necessary.
User opinions and experiences with Divalproex.
To gain a better understanding of Divalproex, let's explore user opinions and experiences with this medication. Real-life user perspectives can provide valuable insights into its effectiveness, tolerability, and overall satisfaction.

Doxazosin Uses, Warnings, and Long term Side Effects Explained
Doxazosin Uses, Warnings, and Long term Side Effects Explained Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

What is Doxazosin?.
Doxazosin is a medication primarily used to treat hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha-1 blockers, which work by relaxing the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily. This helps to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. In addition to its antihypertensive properties, doxazosin has also been found to be effective in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by an enlarged prostate.
Medical Uses of Doxazosin.
As mentioned earlier, doxazosin is primarily used to treat hypertension. High blood pressure is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. By lowering blood pressure, doxazosin helps to reduce the risk of these complications and improve overall cardiovascular health.
In addition to its use in hypertension, doxazosin has also been found to be effective in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can cause urinary problems such as frequent urination, difficulty starting and stopping urination, weak urine flow, and the feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. Doxazosin works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate, leading to improved urinary flow and alleviating the symptoms associated with BPH.
How Doxazosin Works in the Body.
To understand how doxazosin works, it's important to first understand the role of alpha-1 receptors in the body. These receptors are found in various tissues, including the blood vessels and the prostate gland. When activated, they cause the blood vessels to constrict, leading to increased blood pressure, and the muscles in the prostate to contract, contributing to the symptoms of BPH.
Doxazosin blocks these alpha-1 receptors, preventing them from being activated. By doing so, it relaxes the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily and lowering blood pressure. It also relaxes the muscles in the prostate, improving urinary flow and relieving the symptoms of BPH. This dual mechanism of action makes doxazosin an effective treatment option for both conditions.
Potential Side Effects of Doxazosin.
Like any medication, doxazosin can cause side effects in some individuals. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, and fatigue. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, and they tend to improve over time as the body adjusts to the medication. However, if these side effects persist or worsen, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.
In addition to the common side effects, doxazosin may also cause sexual difficulties in some individuals. This can include erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and difficulty ejaculating. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to discuss them with your healthcare provider. They may be able to adjust your dosage or suggest alternative treatment options.
Warnings and Precautions for Taking Doxazosin.
Before starting doxazosin, it is important to inform your healthcare provider about any pre-existing medical conditions or medications you are taking. Certain medical conditions and medications may interact with doxazosin, potentially increasing the risk of side effects or reducing the effectiveness of the medication.
For example, doxazosin may interact with medications used to treat erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra). Combining these medications with doxazosin can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness, fainting, and other serious complications.
Additionally, individuals with liver or kidney disease should use caution when taking doxazosin, as the medication is primarily metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys. Any impairment in liver or kidney function may affect the body's ability to process and eliminate the drug, potentially leading to an accumulation of the medication in the body.
Long-term Effects of Doxazosin.
While doxazosin has been shown to be effective in the short-term management of hypertension and BPH, its long-term effects are still being studied. Some research suggests that doxazosin may have additional benefits beyond its primary indications.

Doxepin
Doxepin Side Effects 1 Views • 5 months ago

Doxepin originally sold as Sinequan functions as an antihistamine and a tricyclic antidepressant depending on the dose. Small amounts may treat insomnia and itch while larger amounts provide relief for anxiety and depression. Off label, doxepin may prevent recurrences of migraine headache, control symptoms of irritable bowel and assist in treatment of chronic hives.

Approved in the late 1960s, doxepin has largely been supplanted by SSRIs, SNRIs and other classes of medicines for treatment of depression. All of the approved antidepressants offer approximately the same degree of relief from symptoms. The choice between agents relates to the side effect profile, doctor familiarity with the drug and unfortunately drug company advertising.

The initial dose of doxepin for depression is 75 mg at bedtime. Fatty meals delay absorption by about 3 hours but decrease clearance from the bloodstream by 40%. After several weeks, the dose may be adjusted to as high as 150 mg either at one time or in divided doses. Some will do well with a lower dose.

For sleep, as little as 1 mg may suffice although the recommended dose is up to 25 mg. Silenor, a brand name drug, provides doxepin in either 3 mg or 6 mg tablets. Unfortunately the price is exorbitant compared to the generic drug. Generic doxepin is available in capsules with as little as 10 mg or 25 mg and the liquid suspension contains 10 mg in each milliliter. This allows a more economical method of taking tailoring doxepin for sleep.

Today, it's all about the eyes, which are somewhat the extension of our brain, so treating ANY condition with them can be scary. I've gotten a lot of questions from listeners about dupilumab (Dupixent) and the side effects specifically when it comes to the eyes. So to dive in on this topic, I brought in today's guest, Dr. Roselie Achten, since her PhD focuses on ocular surface disease in atopic dermatitis patients before and during dupilumab treatment.

Dr. Roselie Achten is a medical doctor and PhD student at the Department of Dermatology at the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands, and I am so excited to have her on the show! You can find some of her research findings in the links section below.

Have you ever experienced any side effects with your eyes after starting dupilumab?

SHOW NOTES:
• Stats on how many patients develop Dupixent eye side effects (AKA dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease)
• Eye symptoms of patients commonly complain about
• How long does it typically take to develop eye problems from Dupixent?
• What puts you more at risk for developing Dupixent eye side effects?
• What are your options if you develop Dupixent eye side effects?
• Can reducing the use of Dupixent help?
