Humira (adalimumab) is one of the newer and more popular injectable medications on the market. You can use it to treat everything from arthritis, psoriasis to digestive issues like Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis.

It works in your body by blocking a compound that's involved with inflammation.

Like I've explained before inflammation could be both good and bad. Good in that it's one of the first steps in your immune response but bad when it gets out of hand like it can with arthritis, Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis.

So when you block a natural inflammatory process you can get side effects associated with that inflammatory process.

Most Common Side Effects of Humira

1) Infection (especially in kids - up to 46%) - Like I mentioned above inflammation is one of the first steps in a natural inflammatory process and as part of the your immune response so when you block this you're essentially lowering your immune system which can lead to more infections.

I did want to point out that infections can happen to everybody but appears to be more problematic in kids who are given Humira.

2) Antibody Development (3%-26%) - anytime you inject something like Humira into your system your body can develop antibodies to it. In extreme cases it can develop neutralizing antibodies. When this happens the drug will become ineffective.

This is one of the reasons why you can see injectable drugs lose their effectiveness over time.

3) Injection Site Reactions (5%-20%) - these types of reactions are fairly common but not all that problematic and most people. Usually what you'll see is some redness and swelling around the area of injection.

4) Elevated CPK (Creatine Phosphokinase) (15%) - This is an enzyme that she'll see in the heart, muscle and the Brain. When you see elevations it's usually a sign of some sort of damage in those areas. So it's important that your doctor know you're on Humira so she doesn't think something is wrong.

5) Positive ANA Titer (12%) - high Anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) is something you usually see in people with lupus. Again, that's why it's important for your doctor to know that you're taking Humira and why you may have a false increase in your ANA titer.

What About Weight Loss and Weight Gain?

Humira can cause some nausea in up to 9% of users. So if there's going to be anything you're more likely to see weight loss because people can lose a little bit of their appetite.

What About Hair Loss?

Hair loss isn't anything that was mentioned in any of the studies that I saw. Furthermore, I haven't had any people who buy used to Humira report hair loss to me.

I will point out though that some users across the country have reported that in rare cases but again I want to stress that it's rare and unlikely.

Hematologist-oncologist Gary Grad, MD, addresses the challenges that patients with polycythemia vera (PV) may experience when treated with a chemotherapy medicine called hydroxyurea. He explains that for some adults, hydroxyurea does not control blood counts well enough, while others cannot tolerate the side effects. Dr. Grad explains that PV patients treated with hydroxyurea should track their blood counts, talk with their Healthcare Professional, and ask about a targeted therapy treatment option such as Jakafi® (ruxolitinib).

Jakafi is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with polycythemia vera who have already taken a medicine called hydroxyurea and it did not work well enough or they could not tolerate it. Jakafi is also used to treat adults with certain types of myelofibrosis.

Jakafi can cause serious side effects including low blood counts and infection. Some people who take Jakafi have developed certain types of non‐melanoma skin cancers. Increases in blood cholesterol levels can also occur. In patients who took another JAK inhibitor to treat rheumatoid arthritis, there was an increased risk of potentially fatal cardiovascular events like heart attack or stroke in patients with risk factors for these events who smoke now or smoked in the past, as well as an increased risk of blood clots in legs or lungs and new (secondary) cancers like lymphoma, especially in patients who smoke now or smoked in the past. The most common side effects of Jakafi for certain types of myelofibrosis and PV include: low platelet or red blood cell counts, bruising, dizziness, headache, and diarrhea. Dr. Alan Christianson here. This is going to be a very tactical podcast about improving your cortisol metabolism. In my new book, THE ADRENAL RESET DIET, I call this being “crashed.” I talk about different levels of adrenal distress, and “crashed” is the lowest level. At this level, people can be horribly fatigued, depressed, have aches and pains and just not be functioning well. It can also badly affect sleep, weaken the immune system and probably create a long-term risk. It’s a big deal and very important to correct.

My patient’s previous doctors felt it would be helpful for her cortisol to be higher, so they gave her hydrocortisone pills. Ironically, taking cortisol was not a path back to health. Hydrocortisone is very similar to the cortisol your body makes, so it increased her cortisol levels. The problem was she put on 20 pounds in the first few weeks. This had never happened to her. Her weight had fluctuated no more than four pounds all of her adult life. She was in her mid-40's, and her weight had remained the same since high school–until she took the hydrocortisone. Besides the weight gain, she had severe acne, fluid retention, thinning hair and severe anxiety.
So, why didn't it help to take the cortisol? Well, here is what is going on: When you have an adrenal disease, the adrenal glands cannot do what the body wants them to do. The biggest adrenal disease is Addison's disease, which is an autoimmunity of the adrenals. The immune system attacks the adrenals and breaks them down to where they cannot produce enough hormone for your needs. There is a signal from the pituitary gland to the adrenals, telling them to make hormones. This signal is a hormone the pituitary gland releases called ACTH or adrenocorticotropic hormone. In cases of Addison's disease, there is no cortisol being made, and there is a very high level of ACTH. So, your brain is yelling at your adrenals to work, and they are not working.
When you have adrenal dysfunction, like my patient had, it is a different story. I address adrenal dysfunction in my new book, where I cover the levels of adrenal distress: crashed, wired or tired, or stressed. If we look at the ACTH level, it will not be elevated. There is low cortisol, but the body wants low cortisol. In my patient’s case, her system did not really want the cortisol from her own body. She was capable of making it, and she did make it at certain times, but her body did not want it because it was really run-down and exhausted. So, it took rest, relaxation, rejuvenation and restoring her cycles and daily rhythms for her body to want to make cortisol again. Pouring cortisol into her body (through the pills) was fighting against what the body was trying to achieve. That is why she had so many, troubling side effects.

If you are crashed, take a look at the chapter on crashed in the new book and think about botanical medicines. Think about timing of light. Think a lot about rest and all the factors that give rise to it. Your blood sugar is a critical one, too. So, manage all the factors that raise your resiliency, and know you can do better and your cortisol production can come back again. If you take cortisol, you are not giving your body what it wants. You are giving your body what it is trying to avoid. You will also make it harder for your body to make more cortisol because you will pull away from your adrenals that much further.
