See Important Safety Information below; Prescribing Information including Boxed Warning: https://bit.ly/3YhB0s9. AUSTEDO XR®/AUSTEDO® can cause depression, suicidal thoughts, or actions in patients with HD. Don’t use if you have liver problems; are taking reserpine, tetrabenazine, or valbenazine.
INDICATIONS & USAGE
AUSTEDO XR is indicated in adults for the treatment of chorea associated with Huntington's disease (HD) & for the treatment of tardive dyskinesia (TD).
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Depression & Suicidality in HD Patients: AUSTEDO XR can increase the risk of depression & suicidal thoughts & behavior (suicidality) in HD Patients. Balance the risks of depression & suicidality with the clinical need for treatment of chorea. Closely monitor patients for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior. Inform patients, their caregivers, & families of the risk of depression & suicidality & instruct them to report behaviors of concern promptly to the treating physician. Exercise caution when treating patients with a history of depression or prior suicide attempts or ideation. AUSTEDO XR is contraindicated in patients who are suicidal, & in patients with untreated or inadequately treated depression.
Contraindications: AUSTEDO XR is contraindicated in HD patients who are suicidal, or have untreated or inadequately treated depression. AUSTEDO XR is also contraindicated in: patients with hepatic impairment; patients taking reserpine or within 20 days of discontinuing reserpine; patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOI therapy; & patients taking tetrabenazine or valbenazine.
Clinical Worsening & Adverse Events in HD Patients: AUSTEDO XR may cause a worsening in mood, cognition, rigidity, & functional capacity. Prescribers should periodically re-evaluate the need for AUSTEDO XR in their patients by assessing the effect on chorea & possible adverse effects.
QTc Prolongation: AUSTEDO XR may prolong the QT interval, but the degree of QT prolongation is not clinically significant when AUSTEDO XR is administered within the recommended dosage range. AUSTEDO XR should be avoided in patients with congenital long QT syndrome & in patients with a history of cardiac arrhythmias.
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), a potentially fatal symptom complex reported in association with drugs that reduce dopaminergic transmission, has been observed in patients receiving tetrabenazine. The risk may be increased by concomitant use of dopamine antagonists or antipsychotics. The management of NMS should include immediate discontinuation of AUSTEDO XR; intensive symptomatic treatment & medical monitoring; & treatment of any concomitant serious medical problems.
Akathisia, Agitation, & Restlessness: AUSTEDO XR may increase the risk of akathisia, agitation, & restlessness. The risk of akathisia may be increased by concomitant use of dopamine antagonists or antipsychotics. If a patient develops akathisia, the AUSTEDO XR dose should be reduced; some patients may require discontinuation of therapy.
Parkinsonism: AUSTEDO XR may cause parkinsonism in TD or HD patients. The risk of parkinsonism may be increased by concomitant use of dopamine antagonists or antipsychotics. If a patient develops parkinsonism, the AUSTEDO XR dose should be reduced; some patients may require discontinuation of therapy.
Sedation & Somnolence: Sedation is a common dose-limiting adverse reaction of AUSTEDO XR. Patients should not perform activities requiring mental alertness, such as operating a motor vehicle or hazardous machinery, until they are on a maintenance dose of AUSTEDO XR & know how the drug affects them. Concomitant use of alcohol or other sedating drugs may have additive effects & worsen sedation & somnolence.
Hyperprolactinemia: Tetrabenazine elevates serum prolactin concentrations in humans. If there is a clinical suspicion of symptomatic hyperprolactinemia, appropriate laboratory testing should be done & consideration should be given to discontinuation of AUSTEDO XR.
Binding to Melanin-Containing Tissues: Deutetrabenazine or its metabolites bind to melanin-containing tissues & could accumulate in these tissues over time. Prescribers should be aware of the possibility of long-term ophthalmologic effects.
Common Adverse Reactions: The most common adverse reactions for AUSTEDO (greater than 8% & greater than placebo) in a controlled clinical study in HD patients were somnolence, diarrhea, dry mouth, & fatigue. The most common adverse reactions for AUSTEDO (4% & greater than placebo) in controlled clinical studies in TD patients were nasopharyngitis & insomnia. Adverse reactions with AUSTEDO XR are expected to be similar to AUSTEDO.

What is Austedo? What is Austedo used for? Uses, Dosage and Side Effects!

Learn all about Austedo, its uses, and how it works! Explore symptoms, side effects, and dosage tips. Share your experiences in the comments!

## Introduction to Austedo
- **Medication Overview**: Austedo, also referred to as deutetrabenazine, is primarily used to treat chorea, which involves sudden involuntary movements associated with Huntington's disease. It also treats symptoms of tardive dyskinesia (TD), a nervous system disorder that causes repetitive and uncontrolled muscle movements, typically in areas such as the face.
- **Mechanism of Action**: Classified as a vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) inhibitor, Austedo functions by altering the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain that affect nerve and muscle function. This is achieved by reducing the amount of chemical messenger between nerve cells, thereby alleviating unwanted movements.

## How Austedo Works
- **Neuronal Communication**: Motor function is regulated in the brain by neurons that communicate through chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters. Movement disorders like Huntington's disease and tardive dyskinesia arise from disruptions in this communication system.
- **Role of VMAT2 Inhibitors**: VMAT2 controls neurotransmitter storage and release in nerve cells. Austedo works by blocking VMAT2, decreasing the availability of neurotransmitters, which ultimately reduces involuntary body movements.

## Dosage and Administration
- **Standard Dosage Instructions**: The initial dose for Austedo is 6 mg taken twice daily, totaling 12 mg per day. The dosage may be increased by increments of 6 mg per day at weekly intervals, depending on the reduction of symptoms and patient tolerability, with a maximum dose of 48 mg per day.
- **Austedo XR**: The extended-release version, Austedo XR, starts with an initial dose of 12 mg once daily, which can also be increased weekly by 6 mg increments up to a maximum of 48 mg per day. It can be taken with or without food, and tablets should be swallowed whole.

## Important Precautions and Side Effects
- **Contraindications and Precautions**: Patients allergic to deutetrabenazine, those with untreated or uncontrolled depression, or those who have recently used certain other medications, should not use Austedo. It is important to adhere to other medication restrictions such as MAO inhibitors within certain time frames.
- **Potential Side Effects**: Possible side effects include allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts, and symptoms indicative of disease progression. Patients and caregivers must be vigilant for changes in mood or behavior and consult healthcare providers regularly to monitor treatment progress.

Aimovig (erenumab-aooe) is a once-monthly, self-administered injection used to prevent migraines in adults. It helps prevent migraines before they start and reduces the number of migraine days per month. Aimovig is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection) using a single-dose prefilled autoinjector or a single-dose prefilled syringe.

How it works?

Aimovig works by blocking the effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a small protein involved in migraines that increases during a migraine attack. By blocking CGRP, Aimovig stops interaction between CGRP and the CGRP receptor which helps to prevent migraines.

Aimovig side effects

The most common Aimovig side effects include:

pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site (6%)

constipation (1%)

cramps, muscle spasms

These common side effects are for the 70mg dose.

Aimovig may cause serious side effects, including:

Allergic reactions, Severe constipation and High blood pressure or worsening of high blood pressure. High blood pressure or constipation are possible long-term side effects of this medicine.

Aimovig dosage

Usual Aimovig dose is 70mg once a month.

Some people may benefit from a dosage of 140mg. Aimovig 140mg is taken once a month.

Warnings

Aimovig may cause allergic reactions. If a serious allergic reaction occurs, stop injecting and go to the emergency room. Hypersensitivity reactions can occur within hours to more than one week after administration.

May also cause constipation with serious complications and new-onset or worsening of pre-existing high blood pressure may occur.

Doctor explains Zolpidem | Uses, doses, side effects and more [Educational video]
Doctor explains Zolpidem | Uses, doses, side effects and more [Educational video] Side Effects 5 Views • 5 months ago

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about zolpidem - a sleeping aid medication that is used commonly to treat insomnia.

Other names for Zolpidem are Ambient (the brand name).

Zolpidem takes around 1 hour to work.

You'll usually take it for a few days or weeks (up to 4 weeks). It's only used for a short period because your body gets used to it quickly. After a few weeks, it's unlikely to have the same effect. Your body can also become dependent on it. Therefore it's advised this is NOT a long term option for sleep issues.

Common side effects are a metallic taste in your mouth or a dry mouth, and feeling sleepy in the daytime.

Do not drink alcohol while you're on zolpidem. Having them together can make you go into a deep sleep where you find it difficult to wake up.

If zolpidem makes you feel sleepy in the daytime, do not drive a car, ride a bike or use machinery.

**‘Reporting of side effects**

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in the package leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via the Yellow Card Scheme at [a website address which links directly to the MHRA Yellow Card site].

By reporting side effects, you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine.’

#Zinc has come to the limelight during the current COVID-19 pandemic as a possible adjunct remedy. Some Healthcare providers have reported (or postulated) that Zinc prevents the COVID-19 virus from replicating (reproducing). A detailed fact sheet on Zinc supplements can be found at the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements under the US Department of Health & Human Service
Although the British National Formulary (BNF) states that, ‘Zinc supplements should not be given unless there is good evidence of deficiency’, most multivitamin/mineral supplements available in the US contain some amount of Zinc which should be sufficient for any required daily need.

Zinc is one of the trace elements needed for normal human function and is usually obtained adequately from a normal healthy diet. Knowing that some people may want to go out and buy zinc and start taking unnecessary large doses of Zinc to prevent falling sick from the COVID-19 virus, it is important to educate the public on possible side effects and drug interactions with Zinc supplements.
Side effects (from BNF #66)
Zinc side effects include
abdominal pain,
dyspepsia,
nausea,
vomiting,
diarrhea,
gastric irritation,
irritability,
headache and
lethargy.
Avoid high doses of Zinc as this makes the side effects worse.
Caution (from BNF #66)
Zinc supplements should be taken with caution in patients with
renal failure (zinc accumulation),
pregnancy (Zinc crosses the placenta) and
breast-feeding mothers (found in breast-milk).
Interactions (From National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements)
Iron
Large amounts of supplemental iron (greater than 25 mg) might decrease zinc absorption. Taking iron supplements between meals helps decrease its effect on zinc absorption.
Copper
High zinc intakes can inhibit copper absorption, sometimes producing copper deficiency and associated anemia
Antibiotics
Both quinolone antibiotics and tetracycline antibiotics interact with zinc in the gastrointestinal tract, inhibiting the absorption of both zinc and the antibiotic. Taking the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after taking a zinc supplement minimizes this interaction.
Penicillamine
Zinc can reduce the absorption and action of penicillamine. To minimize this interaction, individuals should take zinc supplements at least 2 hours before or after taking penicillamine.
Diuretics
Thiazide diuretics such as chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide increase urinary zinc excretion by as much as 60%. Prolonged use of thiazide diuretics could deplete zinc tissue levels, so clinicians should monitor zinc status in patients taking these medications.
Dietary sources of Zinc (From National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements
In conclusion, I would like to mention some dietary sources of Zinc which include whole grains, milk products, oysters, red meat, poultry, baked beans, chickpeas, and nuts (such as cashews and almonds).
Thanks for reading and stay safe.

Navigating Dosage Adjustments: A Guide to Effective Weight Loss with GLP-1 Medications
Embarking on a weight loss journey can be overwhelming, especially when it involves managing medications such as GLP-1 analogs like Mounjaro and Zepbound. Laraine Durham's guide through her own experience offers invaluable insights into optimizing weight loss while minimizing side effects. Her approach to adjusting dosages provides practical advice for individuals seeking to effectively manage their treatment plan.

Key Takeaways:
• Understanding the right dosage is critical for maximizing weight loss while minimizing side effects.
• Keeping a detailed record of dosages, weight fluctuations, and life events helps in personalizing treatment.
• Communicating with your healthcare professional is essential for safe and effective dosage management.

Tailoring Your Dosage for Optimal Results
One of the primary concerns for individuals on weight loss medication is determining the ideal dosage. The transcript clearly highlights that this is not a one-size-fits-all scenario; rather, it requires careful monitoring and personalization. Laraine emphasizes the importance of starting with a low "loading dose" and gradually increasing based on the body's response.
"Everyone starts out on a low dose of these GLP 1 medications because they can cause some side effects…" says Laraine, underscoring the need to give the body time to adjust. Drawing from her experience, Laraine advocates for staying on each dose for at least four weeks and tracking progress. If weight loss stalls or you begin to gain weight, an increase in dosage could be the next step.

The broader implication here is the need for patients to actively engage with their treatment regimen, listening to their bodies and responding accordingly. This tailored approach doesn't just apply to weight loss but can be a template for managing other chronic conditions requiring medication adjustments.

Documenting Your Journey: The Power of Notes
Laraine elucidates the significance of maintaining a detailed record, or a "shot diary," of one's weight loss journey, noting the dosage, weight, and any other observations that could be essential indicators of how well the medication is working.

"I like to keep notes or a spreadsheet… That way you can look back and see your progress and evaluate your weight loss," Laraine advises. This practice isn't just about tracking—it's about creating a database of personal health information that can inform future decisions about dosage adjustments.

By documenting and analyzing personal data, patients can transform their weight loss journey into an evidence-based process. Laraine's strategy illustrates the broader movement towards personalized medicine, where treatments are increasingly tailored to the individual's physiological response, lifestyle, and preferences.

The Importance of a Supportive Life Strategy
A recurrent theme in the transcript is the importance of a well-rounded life strategy in conjunction with medication. Laraine refers to instances such as birthdays and vacations where she would adjust her dosage plans in anticipation of changes in her diet. "Maybe you don't move up that week if you want to eat more than usual," she suggests.

Also, she highlights the significance of incorporating a balanced diet, hydration, supplements, and exercise into her routine to support the effectiveness of the medication. "I try to eat 90 grams of protein a day, drink 100oz of water… I take vitamins. I try to add in strength training," says Laraine.
Placing medication within the context of a broader lifestyle echoes the holistic approach to health and wellness that is gaining traction in today's society. It recognizes that while medication can be a powerful tool for weight loss, its success is amplified by complementary lifestyle choices.

Zantac Tablet: A Guide to Its Common Uses in Heartburn and Indigestion Management
Zantac Tablet: A Guide to Its Common Uses in Heartburn and Indigestion Management Side Effects 5 Views • 5 months ago

How Zantac Tablet Works. Zantac tablets contain the active ingredient ranitidine, which belongs to a class of drugs called H2 blockers. Ranitidine works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical in the body that stimulates the production of stomach acid. By reducing the production of stomach acid, Zantac helps relieve the symptoms associated with heartburn and indigestion.
When taken as directed, Zantac tablets provide fast and effective relief, allowing individuals to go about their daily activities without the discomfort caused by heartburn and indigestion. It is important to note that Zantac is not intended for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms but rather for long-term management.
Common Uses of Zantac Tablet in Heartburn and Indigestion Management.
Zantac tablets are primarily used for the management of heartburn and indigestion. The medication is effective in reducing the symptoms associated with these conditions, including the burning sensation, chest pain, bloating, and discomfort. By inhibiting the production of stomach acid, Zantac helps alleviate these symptoms, providing relief to individuals who suffer from heartburn and indigestion.
In addition to managing heartburn and indigestion, Zantac tablets may also be prescribed for the treatment of other conditions related to excessive stomach acid production. This includes conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
It is important to consult with a healthcare professional before using Zantac tablets for any condition other than heartburn and indigestion. They will be able to provide guidance on the appropriate use and dosage of the medication based on individual needs and medical history.
Dosage and Administration Guidelines for Zantac Tablet.
The dosage of Zantac tablets will vary depending on the individual's age, weight, and the severity of their symptoms. It is important to follow the instructions provided by a healthcare professional or the medication's packaging. Generally, Zantac tablets are taken orally with a glass of water, either with or without food.
For adults and children over 12 years of age, the recommended dosage for managing heartburn and indigestion is typically 150mg twice daily or 300mg once daily at bedtime. However, dosages may vary, so it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
For children under 12 years of age, the dosage will be determined by a healthcare professional based on factors such as weight and severity of symptoms. It is crucial to follow their recommendations and not exceed the prescribed dosage.
Precautions and Side Effects of Zantac Tablet.
While Zantac tablets are generally safe and well-tolerated, it is important to be aware of potential precautions and side effects. Like any medication, Zantac may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with a known allergy to ranitidine or any other ingredients in the tablet should avoid its use.

Yellow fever is a viral disease of typically short duration.[3] In most cases, symptoms include fever, chills, loss of appetite, nausea, muscle pains – particularly in the back – and headaches.[3] Symptoms typically improve within five days.[3] In about 15% of people, within a day of improving the fever comes back, abdominal pain occurs, and liver damage begins causing yellow skin.[3][6] If this occurs, the risk of bleeding and kidney problems is increased.[3]

The disease is caused by yellow fever virus and is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.[3] It infects only humans, other primates, and several types of mosquitoes.[3] In cities, it is spread primarily by Aedes aegypti, a type of mosquito found throughout the tropics and subtropics.[3] The virus is an RNA virus of the genus Flavivirus.[7] The disease may be difficult to tell apart from other illnesses, especially in the early stages.[3] To confirm a suspected case, blood-sample testing with polymerase chain reaction is required.[4]

A safe and effective vaccine against yellow fever exists, and some countries require vaccinations for travelers.[3] Other efforts to prevent infection include reducing the population of the transmitting mosquitoes.[3] In areas where yellow fever is common, early diagnosis of cases and immunization of large parts of the population are important to prevent outbreaks.[3] Once a person is infected, management is symptomatic; no specific measures are effective against the virus.[3] Death occurs in up to half of those who get severe disease.[3][8]

In 2013, yellow fever resulted in about 127,000 severe infections and 45,000 deaths worldwide,[3] with nearly 90 percent of these occurring in Africa.[4] Nearly a billion people live in an area of the world where the disease is common.[3] It is common in tropical areas of the continents of South America and Africa, but not in Asia.[3][9] Since the 1980s, the number of cases of yellow fever has been increasing.[3][10] This is believed to be due to fewer people being immune, more people living in cities, people moving frequently, and changing climate increasing the habitat for mosquitoes.[3]

The disease originated in Africa and spread to South America in the 17th century with the Spanish and Portuguese importation of enslaved Africans from sub-Saharan Africa.[1] Since the 17th century, several major outbreaks of the disease have occurred in the Americas, Africa, and Europe.[1] In the 18th and 19th centuries, yellow fever was considered one of the most dangerous infectious diseases; numerous epidemics swept through major cities of the US and in other parts of the world.[1]

Yaz Tablet | Uses, Side Effects, Dosage, Review

Yaz is a hormonal contraceptive agent that combines drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. It is primarily used to prevent pregnancy but also has other benefits such as managing acne in females over 14 years and alleviating symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). The medication works by suppressing ovulation, altering the uterine environment, and thickening cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg. Despite its effectiveness, Yaz can lead to side effects such as unusual spotting, nausea, breast tenderness, and headaches. More serious side effects may include mood changes, severe headaches, and symptoms indicative of blood clots or liver issues. It's essential to consult a healthcare provider before starting Yaz, especially for individuals with a history of breast cancer, liver, kidney, or heart problems, or those who smoke and are over 35 years of age. Regular health monitoring is recommended to mitigate potential risks. While Yaz can effectively manage hormonal acne and PMDD, it is crucial to adhere to prescribed dosages and report any adverse reactions promptly.
