Aimovig Side Effects You Should Know About (Plus 2 That People Worry About - But Shouldn't)
Aimovig Side Effects You Should Know About (Plus 2 That People Worry About - But Shouldn't) Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Aimovig is in a relatively new class of drugs called CGRP's.

Basically that's a fancy term for saying that it can block a protein in your brain that causes inflammation and pain when you have a migraine.

Aimovig is something that you actually have to inject and you do that subcutaneously. Sometimes people get freaked out when they find out it's an injectable. But it's really not that bad if you do it the right way.

Now when it comes to side effects Aimovig is actually really well tolerated.

Most Likely Side Effects:

Constipation: the most likely side effect of a Aimovig is going to be constipation.

It occurs in about 1-3% of people and the severity tends to vary.

Immune System Issues: the other side effect that you can see happen is antibody development.

What that means is when you give Aimovig your body can actually develop antibodies to it making it less effective.

In a small number of people the antibodies that develop are called neutralizing antibodies.

In about 1% of people maybe even less they can develop these neutralizing antibodies and that will make Aimovig completely ineffective. But again, it's not very common.

Injection Site Reactions: basically when you inject aimovig you're doing at subcutaneously which means into the fat. But sometimes people get redness and swelling and maybe even a rash around that area you can see this in about 5 to 6% of people who take Aimovig.

Muscle Cramps/Spasms: In a small number of people you can get muscle cramps and muscle spasms. This is only one or 2% of users so again it's a small number of people.

One of the classes of people that I would be careful with the Aimovig is if you have high blood pressure because in a small number of people that has made it worse but again it's just a precaution.

Side Effects I Get Asked About (But Don’t Really Happen)

Sometimes I get questions from people about a couple of Aimovig side effects people worry about but don't really happen.

Aimovig Affecting Periods: in women they worry that Aimovig can affect their periods.

The truth is it's not really listed in any of the studies as a side effect and I haven't had it happen with any of the women that I have known who take Aimovig.

Aimovig And Hair Loss: Now there's drugs that can cause hair loss that's pretty well-established but Aimovig does not appear to be one of them so I don't really see any reason to be concerned about.

Aimovig coupon
Now while it's not a side effect one of the things that can happen is people can get a little bit of sticker shock about how expensive the medication is.

Here's a link to the Aimovig companies website where you can get a coupon if that's one of your concerns: https://www.aimovigaccesscard.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr-yn05vI6gIV8Ql9Ch0M7w0aEAAYASAAEgKvYfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Now if you have a Medicare Plan you won't be able to use this coupon. But if you have private insurance and you have a high co-pay it can come in pretty handy.

If you have been prescribed Aimovig, the brand name for erenumab, you should have received training from your healthcare professional on how to give yourself the injection safely. In this video, we will review step-by-step how to give yourself an Aimovig injection using the pre-filled autoinjector.

Before using Aimovig, review the Instructions for Use provided with your prescription. When you are ready to inject your dose, gather your materials. You will need: Your Aimovig autoinjector that has been at room temperature for at least 30 minutes, a piece of gauze or a cotton ball, an alcohol swab, and a sharps container.

Now that you are ready to inject your dose, let’s review the steps on how to inject your Aimovig autoinjector.

Step One: Check your pen to make sure the medication isn’t expired, frozen, or cloudy. It should look clear and colorless to slightly yellow, and shouldn’t have particles in it.
Step two: Wash your hands with soap and water.
Step three: Choose your injection site. If you are injecting Aimovig by yourself, you can inject it into your stomach, 2 inches away from your belly button, or into the front of your thigh. If someone else is helping you, they can inject it into the back of your upper arm. Clean your chosen injection site with an alcohol swab.
Step four: Remove the white cap for 70mg pen or orange cap for 140mg pen and either stretch or pinch your skin.
Step five: Place the injection end straight onto your skin, making sure you can see the window.
Step six: Push the autoinjector firmly against your skin which unlocks the start button. While still holding the autoinjector firmly against your skin, press the start button. You might hear or feel a click. Continue holding the autoinjector against your skin until the window is fully yellow - this may take up to 15 seconds, you might hear or feel a click.
Step seven: Remove the autoinjector from your skin and place it directly into a sharps container.
Step eight: If you have any bleeding at the injection site, you can press a cotton ball or gauze over the injection site until the bleeding has stopped.

If you have any questions about how to inject Aimovig, contact your healthcare provider or the manufacturer, Amgen.

Apalutamide: Understanding its Mechanism of Action
Apalutamide: Understanding its Mechanism of Action Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Apalutamide, also known by its brand name Erleada, is a breakthrough anti-androgen medication specifically designed to target the androgen receptors found in prostate cancer cells. Androgens, such as testosterone, are hormones that play a crucial role in the growth and development of prostate cancer. By inhibiting the binding of androgens to their receptors, Apalutamide effectively suppresses the growth and spread of the tumor.
The mechanism of action of Apalutamide involves blocking the androgen receptors and preventing their activation by androgens. This leads to a decrease in the signaling pathways responsible for cancer cell growth and survival. In addition, Apalutamide inhibits the translocation of androgen receptors into the nucleus of the cancer cells, further impeding their ability to promote tumor growth.
Clinical trials and efficacy of Apalutamide.
Extensive clinical trials have demonstrated the impressive efficacy of Apalutamide in the treatment of prostate cancer. The landmark SPARTAN trial, involving over 1,200 patients with non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, showed that Apalutamide significantly prolonged metastasis-free survival compared to a placebo. Patients treated with Apalutamide experienced a median metastasis-free survival of 40.5 months, compared to 16.2 months in the placebo group.
Furthermore, Apalutamide has also demonstrated a significant improvement in overall survival in patients with non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. The overall survival benefit observed in the TITAN trial, which included patients with metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer, further emphasizes the potential of Apalutamide as a game-changing treatment option.
The efficacy of Apalutamide is not limited to delaying disease progression. It also helps maintain the patient's quality of life by preserving sexual function and preventing bone-related complications, which are common side effects of other prostate cancer treatments. This unique feature sets Apalutamide apart from other therapies, making it a more convenient and accessible option for patients.
Side effects and safety considerations of Apalutamide.
Like any medication, Apalutamide may cause side effects. However, the adverse effects associated with Apalutamide are generally well-tolerated and manageable. Common side effects include fatigue, hypertension, rash, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually mild to moderate in severity and can be effectively managed through supportive care measures.
It is important to note that Apalutamide does not interfere with testosterone production, unlike hormonal therapies such as surgical castration or the use of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists. This means that patients treated with Apalutamide do not experience the typical side effects associated with hormonal therapies, such as hot flashes, loss of libido, and erectile dysfunction.
Comparison of Apalutamide with other treatments.
Apalutamide has emerged as a game-changer in the field of prostate cancer treatment, offering a more targeted and effective approach compared to conventional therapies. Unlike chemotherapy, which targets rapidly dividing cells throughout the body, Apalutamide specifically focuses on inhibiting the androgen receptors in prostate cancer cells, leading to more favorable outcomes and fewer systemic side effects.
Furthermore, Apalutamide does not require concurrent hormonal therapies, making it a more convenient option for patients. While hormonal therapies are effective in reducing androgen levels and shrinking the tumor, they often come with a range of side effects that can significantly impact the patient's quality of life. Apalutamide offers a more targeted approach without compromising the patient's overall well-being.

Update: FDA Approves Apalutamide (Erleada) for Metastatic Castration-Sensitive Prostate Cancer
Update: FDA Approves Apalutamide (Erleada) for Metastatic Castration-Sensitive Prostate Cancer Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

PCRI’s Executive Director, Mark Scholz, MD, announces that Erleada (apalutamide) has been FDA-approved for use in a new group of prostate cancer patients. Up until now, Erleada was only FDA-approved for the treatment of castrate-resistant prostate cancer (that is, prostate cancer that is resistant to Lupron or another first-generation hormone treatment) but now, Erleada has been approved for concurrent use with Lupron (or a Lupron type drug) in men with metastatic castrate-sensitive disease.

0:12 Erleada is a second-generation hormonal treatment that is effective at treating advanced prostate cancer. Up until now, it has only been used to treat prostate cancer that was resistant to first-generation treatments (Casodex, Lupron, etc.) known as "castrate-resistant prostate cancer."

0:27 A large 1000-person prospective trial was conducted to test Erleada's effectiveness when added to Lupron in men with metastatic castrate-sensitive prostate cancer. Researchers found improved survival and better outcomes in men when Erleada was added to Lupron. Hence, the FDA approved Erleada for the treatment of this stage of prostate cancer.

0:45 Men with metastatic castrate-sensitive prostate cancer are usually in a situation in which, for whatever reason, their PSAs were not being monitored and it rose to a very high level without treatment. Historically, they would be treated with Lupron alone, Lupron plus chemotherapy (e.g. Taxotere), or Lupron plus Zytiga (another second-generation hormonal agent).

1:39 Erleada is typically well-tolerated. Some men experience a rash, but in most cases, there are no additional side effects than when Lupron is taken alone.

Hormone Therapy Side Effects
Hormone Therapy Side Effects Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Edward Weber, M.D. Medical Oncologist, describes the side effects of cardiac complications when receiving Androgen Deprivation Therapy, ADT, also known as Hormone Therapy, for treatment of Prostate Cancer.

ADT is used to reduce the production of testosterone needed for the growth of prostate cancer cells. But ADT can have cardiac complications, especially on men with a history of heart disease.

Video Development: Dean Dubinsky

Video Transcript:

Prostate Cancer Free Foundation. Increasing Knowledge - Building Hope. Edward Weber, M.D. Medical Oncologist, Prostate Cancer Results Study Group.

Men with prostate cancer are much more likely to die of cardiac disease and not from prostate cancer, unless the diagnosis is made at a very late stage.  For that reason, a man’s cardiac history, his cardiovascular risk factors, and the choice of which drug to use for ADT are very critical issues.

Androgen deprivation therapy, ADT, the  mainstay of treatment for years, is associated with a 10-20% increased risk of cardiac complications, such as a heart attack, stroke, or sudden death. If a man has already had two important cardiac events before starting ADT the risk of another cardiac event is greatly increased. Surprisingly these serious problems can occur within the  first 6 - 12 months.

Degarelix (Firmagon), the newer drug for ADT, is less toxic to the heart than leuprolide (Lupron), and, for many clinicians, is becoming the preferred agent for hormone therapy.

Every man before starting ADT needs to have a thorough evaluation for cardiac risk factors. This exam should focus on past history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, and the life-style factors diet and exercise habits.

In some men this pre-ADT evaluation will lead to choosing Firmagon over Lupron, or receiving the shortest period of drug exposure as possible, or beginning a program for modification of cardiac risk factors — or possibly avoiding the use of these drugs entirely.

What is Aricept used for? Main uses, dosage recommendations, potential side effects, and user
What is Aricept used for? Main uses, dosage recommendations, potential side effects, and user Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Aricept, also known by its generic name donepezil, is a medication primarily used to treat symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. It falls under the category of cholinesterase inhibitors, which means it works by increasing the levels of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine in the brain. This neurotransmitter is involved in memory and cognition.

The main use of Aricept is to improve cognitive function and slow down the progression of symptoms in individuals with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. It may help with memory, language, thinking, and overall daily functioning. It does not cure Alzheimer's disease or halt its progression, but it can provide some relief and improve quality of life for patients and their caregivers.

Dosage recommendations for Aricept may vary depending on the individual's age, weight, and overall health condition. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional or follow the prescribing physician's instructions for the appropriate dosage. Generally, the starting dose is 5 mg taken orally once a day, usually in the evening. After a few weeks, the dosage may be increased to 10 mg per day if tolerated well.

As with any medication, Aricept does come with potential side effects. Some common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, muscle cramps, fatigue, and insomnia. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, but it is important to notify a healthcare professional if they become severe or persistent.

It is worth mentioning that not everyone may experience side effects, and some individuals may have different reactions to the medication. It is essential to discuss any concerns or potential side effects with a healthcare professional before starting Aricept.

In conclusion, Aricept is primarily used to improve cognitive function and slow down the progression of symptoms in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. It is important to follow the recommended dosage, be aware of potential side effects, and consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and guidance.

Unveiling the Untold Truth: Exploring the Potential Side Effects of Qulipta
Unveiling the Untold Truth: Exploring the Potential Side Effects of Qulipta Side Effects 3 Views • 5 months ago

Qulipta, while offering hope for those seeking relief from their ailments, has its fair share of potential side effects. It is crucial for patients to be aware of these risks before deciding to incorporate Qulipta into their treatment plan.
Common Side Effects of Qulipta.
As with any medication, Qulipta may cause some common side effects that are generally mild and manageable. These side effects can vary from person to person and may include nausea, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. While these symptoms may not be cause for immediate concern, they can still impact an individual's daily life and overall well-being.
It is important to note that these common side effects are usually temporary and tend to subside as the body adjusts to the medication. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen over time, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further guidance.
Rare but Serious Side Effects of Qulipta.
While rare, there are potential serious side effects associated with Qulipta that require immediate medical attention. These side effects may include allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and severe drowsiness. It is crucial for patients to be vigilant and seek medical help if they experience any of these symptoms.
Additionally, some individuals may experience more specific side effects depending on their medical history and individual response to the medication. These can range from gastrointestinal issues such as stomach pain and diarrhea to neurological symptoms like confusion or memory problems. It is essential to be aware of these potential risks and discuss them with a healthcare provider before starting Qulipta.
Precautions and Warnings when using Qulipta.
Before starting any new medication, it is crucial to understand the precautions and warnings associated with its use. Qulipta is no exception, and there are important considerations to keep in mind.
Precautions.
Qulipta may interact with certain medications, including blood thinners and antidepressants, leading to potentially harmful effects. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking to minimize the risk of adverse reactions.
Furthermore, individuals with certain medical conditions such as liver or kidney disease, heart problems, or a history of substance abuse may require additional monitoring while taking Qulipta. It is essential to discuss these factors with your healthcare provider to ensure the safe and effective use of the medication.
Warnings.
Qulipta carries a black box warning, the most serious type of warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This warning highlights the potential risks associated with the medication and emphasizes the need for caution.
One of the major concerns is the increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, particularly in individuals under the age of 25. Patients and their caregivers should be vigilant for any changes in mood, behavior, or thoughts of self-harm while using Qulipta. If any such symptoms arise, immediate medical attention should be sought.
Managing and Minimizing Side Effects of Qulipta.
While it is impossible to completely eliminate the risk of side effects, there are steps that can be taken to manage and minimize their impact. Working closely with a healthcare provider is crucial in finding the right balance between the potential benefits and risks of Qulipta.
Lifestyle Modifications.
In some cases, making simple lifestyle modifications can help alleviate certain side effects. For example, if nausea is a common side effect, eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding spicy or greasy foods may provide relief. Additionally, staying hydrated and getting enough rest can support overall well-being and potentially reduce the severity of side effects.

Aubagio (Teriflunomide) Safety Monitoring for Multiple Sclerosis [2018]

In this short video Dr. B reviews required safety screening before starting and while taking a bath you for multiple sclerosis. Your Provider will want to check several labs before starting including a TB test (skin or blood test), and liver enzyme test and blood counts. They may want to check a few others depending on your history.

During the 1st six months while taking Aubagio, we need to check ALT (a liver enzyme) once a month. After that we only need to check (liver enzymes and blood counts) every 3-6 months.

Aubagio can cause GI upset that normal resolved in a couple months. About 13% of people have a transient hair thinning (alopecia) that occurs at month 2 and tends to resolve around month 6. Stopping Aubagio does not change that outcome.

Aubagio is not considered safe in pregnancy and appropriate birth control measures are important.

Aubagio has a long half life (Sticks around the body for a long time after you stop taking it). If you need to get it cleared quickly from the body for whatever reason, there is a rapid elimination process that can be used.

Rarely Aubagio can cause a peripheral neuropathy or elevated blood pressure.
