Understanding Lyrica (pregabalin): Uses for nerve pain, Dosage, and Potential Side Effects
Understanding Lyrica (pregabalin): Uses for nerve pain, Dosage, and Potential Side Effects Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

What is Lyrica and how does it work?. Lyrica for nerve pain? Lyrica, also known by its generic name pregabalin, is a medication that is used to treat a variety of conditions. It was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004 for the treatment of neuropathic pain associated with diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, and spinal cord injury. It is also used to treat seizures, fibromyalgia, and generalized anxiety disorder.
Lyrica works by binding to a specific type of calcium channel in the body, which reduces the release of neurotransmitters that transmit pain signals to the brain. This results in a reduction in pain and other symptoms associated with conditions such as neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and anxiety.
Common uses of Lyrica.
Lyrica is used to treat a variety of conditions, including:.
Neuropathic pain.
Neuropathic pain is a type of pain that is caused by damage to nerves. It can be caused by conditions such as diabetes, shingles, or spinal cord injury. Lyrica is often used to treat neuropathic pain, as it can help reduce the intensity of pain and improve overall quality of life.
Seizures.
Lyrica is also used to treat seizures in people with epilepsy. It can help reduce the frequency and severity of seizures, which can improve overall quality of life.
Fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes widespread pain, fatigue, and other symptoms. Lyrica is approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia, as it can help reduce pain and improve sleep.
Generalized anxiety disorder.
Lyrica is also used to treat generalized anxiety disorder, a condition characterized by excessive worry and anxiety. It can help reduce symptoms such as restlessness, irritability, and difficulty sleeping.
Dosage guidelines for Lyrica.
The dosage of Lyrica will vary depending on the condition being treated and other individual factors such as age, weight, and overall health. It is important to follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider to ensure maximum effectiveness and minimize the risk of side effects.
For the treatment of neuropathic pain, the recommended starting dose of Lyrica is 50 mg three times daily, which can be increased to a maximum dose of 300 mg per day. For the treatment of seizures, the recommended starting dose is 75 mg twice daily, which can be increased to a maximum dose of 600 mg per day. For the treatment of fibromyalgia, the recommended starting dose is 75 mg twice daily, which can be increased to a maximum dose of 450 mg per day. For the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder, the recommended starting dose is 150 mg per day, which can be increased to a maximum dose of 600 mg per day.
It is important to take Lyrica at the same time(s) each day, with or without food. Do not crush or chew the capsules or tablets, and do not stop taking Lyrica without first consulting your healthcare provider.
Potential side effects of Lyrica.
Like all medications, Lyrica can cause side effects. The most common side effects of Lyrica include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, and constipation. These side effects usually go away on their own within a few days or weeks of starting treatment.
Precautions and warnings when taking Lyrica.
Before taking Lyrica, it is important to inform your healthcare provider if you have any allergies, medical conditions, or are taking any other medications. Lyrica may interact with certain medications, including opioids, benzodiazepines, and other medications that cause drowsiness.
Lyrica may also cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision, which can impair your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how Lyrica affects you.
Lyrica may also increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in some people, especially those with a history of depression or other mental health conditions. If you experience any changes in mood or behavior while taking Lyrica, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Interactions with other medications.
Lyrica may interact with certain medications, including opioids, benzodiazepines, and other medications that cause drowsiness. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbal remedies.

Pregabalin Capsules: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects & Important Advice | MediInsights
Pregabalin Capsules: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects & Important Advice | MediInsights Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Welcome to MediInsights: Unlocking The Wonders of Wellness

Hello, MediInsights community! In today's video, we will delve into everything you need to know about Pregabalin Capsules, including their uses, dosage, mechanism of action, side effects, and important advice for safe usage. Let's get started!

Pregabalin Capsules: An Overview

Pregabalin Capsules are widely used for treating various types of neuropathic pain, such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, and pain from spinal cord injuries. They are also effective in managing fibromyalgia and serve as an adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults.

Dosage of Pregabalin Capsules:

The typical starting dose for Pregabalin is 150 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. Depending on individual response and tolerance, this can be increased up to 600 mg per day. For neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia, doses usually range between 300 to 450 mg per day, while for epilepsy, the dosage can be adjusted up to 600 mg daily.

Mechanism of Action:

Pregabalin works by binding to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system. This binding action reduces the release of neurotransmitters like glutamate, norepinephrine, and substance P, which are involved in pain transmission and seizure activity. By modulating these neurotransmitters, Pregabalin effectively alleviates pain and controls seizures.

Side Effects of Pregabalin Capsules:

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, swelling, blurred vision, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating. Severe side effects can include allergic reactions, muscle pain, and respiratory issues. It's crucial to monitor for signs of depression or suicidal thoughts while on this medication.

Important Advice for Using Pregabalin Capsules:

Do not discontinue abruptly: Stopping Pregabalin suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms; it should be tapered off under medical supervision.
Monitor for side effects: Regular check-ups are necessary to monitor for any adverse reactions, especially in patients with renal impairment or those taking other central nervous system depressants.
Avoid alcohol: Alcohol can increase the sedative effects of Pregabalin, leading to increased risk of dizziness and drowsiness.
Report any unusual symptoms: Any new or worsening symptoms, particularly mood changes or suicidal thoughts, should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately.
Use caution when operating machinery: Due to its potential to cause dizziness and drowsiness, patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until they understand how Pregabalin affects them.

Drug Cards Daily | Episode #1: levothyroxine (Synthroid, Levoxyl) | Treating Hypothyroidism and Thyrotropin-Dependent Cancers

This episode of Drug Cards Daily is on the drug levothyroxine. Levothyroxine has many brand names such as Synthroid, and Tirosint (to name a few) and is used as first-line in hypothyroidism. It is also used in the treatment of thyrotropin-stimulating hormone (TSH) dependent thyroid cancers. The main dosage form is tablets and it comes in a wide variety of strengths commonly dosed in micrograms (mcg). Dosing is individualized with a general standard of either approximately 1-1.6 mcg/kg/day or 50 mcg/day. From there adjustments are made in 12-25 mcg increments every 3-6 weeks until serum TSH and T4 is at a normal range for greater than 5-6 weeks. It is recommended to be taken in the morning 30-60 minutes before food. If needed it can be crushed but levothyroxine should not be administered within 4 hours of calcium or iron containing products.

Synthroid: 5 Reasons it isn't working for you
Synthroid: 5 Reasons it isn't working for you Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

5 big reasons why Synthroid isn't helping you feel better. Synthroid is a VERY common low thyroid medication prescribed to treat hypothyroidism but only works if used correctly.

Are you taking the thyroid medication known as Synthroid? By the way, the information we are about to talk about ALSO applies to levothyroxine!

If so, then you should be aware that there are a number of reasons why this medication may NOT be working for you in your body.

Levothyroxine and Synthroid are some of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States with levothyroxine making the #1 spot in 2016.

This means that there are a TON of people using these medications.

The problem with that is that most people using them are not actually getting the benefit of the medication for a number of issues.

We are going to talk about 5 REASONS that many people using Synthroid are NOT feeling well (and what you can do about it).

#1. Your dose.

The first, and probably most common, issue is that most people are simply taking an insufficient or low dose. If your dose is too low then you simply won't feel any better. Thyroid medication is used to SUPPLEMENT low levels of thyroid hormone in your body. You MUST be using the right dose if you want to feel better and you are most likely underdosed if you basing your dosing off of your TSH.

#2. Absorption.

It doesn't matter if you are taking Synthroid or levothyroxine if it isn't being absorbed into your body! You can take as much medication as you want but it's ineffective unless it makes it through your intestinal lining. Many gut-related issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, the use of acid blockers, and gut inflammation can LIMIT this absorption.

If you have any of these issues be sure that you take care of them if you want your medication to be effective.

#3. Conversion issues.

Next is something called peripheral thyroid conversion. In order for your Synthroid to work, it MUST be converted into the ACTIVE thyroid hormone known as T3.

What people don't realize is that up to 20% of the population has problems with this conversion process.

#4. The wrong medication.

There are some people in which Synthroid and levothyroxine simply will NOT work. This is because they can't convert the medication or they need a medication with fewer fillers or dyes. Either way, you should understand that Synthroid may not be the answer you are looking for and there are MANY other thyroid medications available.

#5. You're taking it wrong.

Contraindications to Synthroid and Levothyroxine Often Leading To Misdiagnosis
Contraindications to Synthroid and Levothyroxine Often Leading To Misdiagnosis Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

The Wellness Way - Lincoln

Dr. Stan Schulte, a Wellness Way practitioner and chiropractor in Lincoln, NE, explains the contraindications to synthroid and levothyroxine and how these can lead to misdiagnosis of thyroid issues.

Do I actually like Synthroid? (Advice after treating hundreds of thyroid patients)
Do I actually like Synthroid? (Advice after treating hundreds of thyroid patients) Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Do I actually like Synthroid? Yes, and no. There is a place for Synthroid but there are MUCH better alternatives out there for treating low thyroid and hypothyroidism.

So, the question: Do I like Synthroid?

The answer is yes! Synthroid (and levothyroxine) still have a lot of value even though many patients don't necessarily do well on them.

Before you call me a pharmaceutical shill, realize that we need to be even-handed in our discussion of thyroid medications. There ARE some people who do well on Synthroid (even if they are the minority).

Why don’t people like Synthroid?

#1. Their dose is probably not right (they are taking too little)
You can push up free T3 and total T3 by increasing your dose. But if you dose based on your TSH you will almost always be underdosed.

#2. It’s one of the most widely prescribed medications in the world
People have had bad experiences on it

#3. Doctors are often dismissive of concerns over Synthroid

Do you have to change thyroid medications to feel better?

Not necessarily. In fact, there are minor changes you can make to feel better very quickly.

Some patients do VERY well on T4 only (these patients include those who are super converters). Some people have no problem taking T4 and turning it directly into T3.

What should you do if you are on levo/Synthroid and not feeling better?

#1. Dose based upon your T4/T3 and reverse T3 level (NOT your TSH)
#2. Switch to a different brand of T4.
#3. If you are Synthroid try levothyroxine.
#4. If you are on levothyroxine try Synthroid.
#4. If you’ve tried both then switch to Tirosint or Tirosint-sol.
#5. Try the 50mcg tablet of Synthroid/levo and dose based on that
Clean up your gut and diet.

Thyroid Medications: What You Need to Know About Treating Thyroid Disorders
Thyroid Medications: What You Need to Know About Treating Thyroid Disorders Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

For individuals diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, medication is often a crucial component of treatment. Understanding how these medications work, their benefits, and potential side effects is essential for effective thyroid management. In this video, Dr. Nate Walsh provides a comprehensive guide to the most commonly prescribed thyroid medications, how they regulate hormone levels, and key factors to consider during treatment.

🔹 Topics covered:
✔ Medications for Hypothyroidism: Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Levoxyl) is the standard treatment for an underactive thyroid. Learn how it works to replace missing thyroid hormones, why consistency is key, and how factors like diet and other medications can affect absorption.
✔ Medications for Hyperthyroidism: Methimazole and Propylthiouracil (PTU) help reduce excessive thyroid hormone production, while beta-blockers may be used to manage symptoms such as rapid heart rate and tremors.
✔ Alternative and Advanced Treatments: In some cases, radioactive iodine therapy or thyroid surgery may be recommended for long-term management of hyperthyroidism or thyroid nodules. Learn when these treatments might be necessary and what to expect.
✔ Monitoring and Side Effects: Thyroid medication dosages often require adjustments over time. Dr. Walsh explains the importance of regular blood tests to ensure optimal thyroid function and discusses potential side effects such as hair thinning, changes in energy levels, and liver function concerns.

Managing a thyroid disorder is a lifelong journey, but with the right treatment plan, individuals can maintain a healthy and balanced life. If you are currently on thyroid medication or have questions about treatment options, drop your questions in the comments—Dr. Walsh will address them in future videos.

Losing Weight on Levothyroxine: Why it's Not Working and How to Fix it
Losing Weight on Levothyroxine: Why it's Not Working and How to Fix it Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Losing weight on levothyroxine, is it possible? You bet. Here's why your levothyroxine is not helping with weight loss and how to fix it.

Levothyroxine is the most commonly prescribed medication for treating low thyroid or hypothyroidism.

One of the most common symptoms associated with low thyroid function is WEIGHT GAIN. You might think that treating your thyroid using thyroid medication would cause you to lose weight but that isn't always the case and this video explains why that is.

It makes sense that increasing your thyroid hormone should cause weight loss, especially if the opposite leads to weight gain.

So if levothyroxine isn't helping you with weight loss the question is why not? Here are a few reasons why this may be the case:

#1. Is it the right medication for you?
There are many different thyroid medications available on the market and they are not all created equal. Levothyroxine may simply not be the best medication for your body.

#2. Have you waited long enough?
Even if levothyroxine is the right medication for you, have you given it enough time to kick in and to work?
It takes roughly 4-6 weeks to see any change once you make changes to your thyroid medication dose!

#3. Are you taking enough?
While levothyroxine may be the right medication for you, you have to make sure that you are taking enough.
It won't provide any benefit to you if your dose is simply too low.

#4. Is it getting into your system?
And lastly, you have to make sure that the medication you are taking is getting into your system. Believe it or not, people take their thyroid medication incorrectly which leads to decreased absorption in the gut.

When it comes down to it, levothyroxine just isn't always the best option for weight loss. Other thyroid medications, especially those that contain T3 thyroid hormone are often much more effective of that purpose. These medications include things like Armour thyroid, other formulations of NDT, and even T3 only thyroid medications.

If you aren't sure what to do next I've created a list of people who tend to do the BEST on levothyroxine. People in this category include those who are:

- Treatment naive
- Sensitive to T3 and/or NDT medications
- Sensitive to medications and supplements in general
- Have few if any chronic illnesses
- Have seen some improvement on levothyroxine within a short period of time (usually between 4-8 weeks)

Are you using levothyroxine? Is it helping you with weight loss? Let me know below!

Armour thyroid - 10 things you should know BEFORE using it
Armour thyroid - 10 things you should know BEFORE using it Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Armour thyroid and 10 things you should know before you take this thyroid medication. Is armour thyroid the best medication for thyroid patients?

Whether you are thinking about using Armour thyroid or if you are already using it, you should be aware of these 10 things!

These 10 things will help you to understand more about armour thyroid as a thyroid medication and whether or not it is right for you.

10 things you should know about Armour thyroid include:

#1. Armour thyroid is not the only formulation of NDT.
You should be aware that while armour thyroid is a great thyroid medication it is not the only (or even the best) form of NDT.

#2. Armour thyroid is better for weight loss compared to Synthroid and levothyroxine.
Studies consistently show that armour thyroid helps with weight loss more than Synthroid/levo.

#3. Armour thyroid is the most expensive version of NDT.
1 month supply of Armour thyroid will cost you around $30 while 1 month supply of NP thyroid will run around $7.

#4. It contains animal products.
All formulations of NDT, including Armour thyroid, contain animal products.

#5. It contains both T4 and T3.
One of the reasons this medication is so effective is because it contains BOTH T4 and T3.

#6. It contains additional ingredients such as calcitonin, T1, and T2.
In addition to T4 and T3 Armour also contains other thyroid hormones such as T1 and T2.

#7. It is preferred over Synthroid/levothyroxine by thyroid patients.
Patients consistently show in medical research that they prefer Armour over Synthroid/levo.

#8. It is NOT the generic of NP thyroid.
Sometimes a pharmacist will try to switch out Armour for NP thyroid but they are NOT the same thing.

#9. Switching from T4 to Armour thyroid can be difficult.
If you decide to switch to Armour from Levo/synthroid then you should use a conversion chart to help.

#10. Armour thyroid impacts your lab tests different than levothyroxine and Synthroid.
Armour tends to impact your TSH, free t3, and free t4 differently from other thyroid medications.

Synthroid Overdose: signs you taking too much thyroid medication Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Signs of Synthroid overdose and signs you are taking too much thyroid medication.

Are you taking too much Synthroid? Synthroid is the most commonly prescribed medication in the US which means that millions of people are taking this medicine.

Of those millions, there will always be a small percentage who are either taking too much or too little. We are going to focus on those people who are taking too much.

Symptoms of taking too much Synthroid include...

Common but less serious side effects:

Increased hair loss
Weight loss (sometimes but not always)
Tremors in the extremities
Jittery sensation
Heart palpitations
Anxiety
Flushing of the skin
Heat intolerance (not able to stand hot environments)

Rare, but serious side effects of Synthroid overdose include:

Osteoporosis or decreased bone density
Heart enlargement
Atrial fibrillation
Chest pain
Shortness of breath
*If you experience any of these symptoms you should seek medical care as soon as possible.

If you are experiencing any of these side effects then you can check your blood work to confirm that you are indeed taking too much.

If you are you will most likely see the following changes:

- Suppressed TSH (sometimes a low TSH)
- High free T4
- High free T3 (sometimes)

These, in combination with the symptoms listed above, are signs that you are taking too much thyroid medication.

How to prevent hoarse voice due to inhalers?
How to prevent hoarse voice due to inhalers? Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Tips to prevent voice hoarseness caused by inhaler use. Many patients complain of a hoarse voice when using inhalers, especially those which contain corticosteroids (such as Symbicort, Seretide, Foster etc.). These inhaler treatments are beneficial for controlling conditions such as asthma, however a hoarse voice can develop in some patients.

Often, there are 2 causes which are often overlooked:

1. Incorrect inhaler technique - many patients were never shown the correct inhaler technique for their prescribed device. There are many inhalers available and using them correctly can be confusing. Incorrect use causes the medication to deposit at the back of the throat, which in time causes irritation and a hoarse voice. I recommend to always ask your doctor or healthcare professional for a demonstration on how to use any newly prescribed inhaler and to regularly check your technique during consultations. Breathing in the medication correctly from the inhaler is specific to each device, however can be generally classified in two broad categories: A) slow and deep breath for MDI inhalers (which produce a puff on their own) and B) strong/powerful and deep breath in for DPI inhalers (which contain a dry powder, therefore require more force to effectively draw the medication deep into the lungs).

2. Not rinsing the back of the throat after taking the dose - This is often overlooked and a very simple way to prevent inhaler-induced voice hoarseness. Especially with corticosteroid inhalers, removing any residual medication from the back of the throat and mouth is very helpful. You can do this by simply taking some water in your mouth, swishing it around, gargling for a few seconds and spitting it out. I highly recommend doing this after using your inhaler. The medication only needs to be in the airways deep in the lungs.

With MDI inhalers, a spacer device can sometimes also help:
