Dangerous Side Effects
Adamantanes such as amantadine and memantine are known to have antiviral properties. The tricyclo-bridged hydrocarbon structure interferes with viroporin protein channel responsible for release of RNA-viruses. In a human model cell line, expression of the CTSL gene coding for the cathepsin L, a lysosomal protease involved in SARS-CoV-2 entry to cells, is significantly downregulated by amantadine. Antiviral effects shown for amantadine and memantine in models for bovine coronavirus, mouse hepatitis virus, human coronavirus OC43, and SARS‐CoV led to the suggestion that adamantanes could be used for COVID-19

Albendazole (Albenza) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings
Albendazole, marketed as Albenza and Zentel, is an anthelmintic medication used to treat various parasitic worm infestations, including neurocysticercosis, echinococcosis, giardiasis, ascariasis, trichuriasis, hookworm, strongyloidiasis, and pinworm. Its common side effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and temporary hair loss, while rare but serious side effects may involve bone marrow suppression, liver damage, severe allergic reactions, and retinal damage. Albendazole works by inhibiting tubulin polymerization, disrupting the parasite's glucose absorption, and ultimately causing its death. Dosages vary by condition, with specific instructions for neurocysticercosis, echinococcosis, and other infections. It interacts with medications like dexamethasone, praziquantel, and theophylline, increasing albendazole's plasma levels. Warnings include potential risks during pregnancy (category C), liver disease, bone marrow suppression, and pre-existing retinal lesions, necessitating careful monitoring and risk assessment.

In this video, I explain the differences between the well-known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and Naproxen (Aleve). These are both over-the-counter analgesic medications that are very similar especially when just seeing them on the shelf in the drug store, but there are some key differences to know about when you are taking either of them. In this video, I start off by giving a general overview of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), then I break down the key differences between ibuprofen and naproxen. As a nurse practitioner, I am commonly asked about these two drugs and so I hope this video helps you understand the differences between ibuprofen and naproxen as well.
I am a dual certified family and pediatric nurse practitioner. I worked many years as a registered nurse (RN) in the emergency room, then continued working in the emergency room after becoming a nurse practitioner (NP). I also did travel nursing as an ER nurse. Aciclovir (or acyclovir) is an antiviral medicine.
It treats infections caused by the herpes virus (herpes simplex), including:

Acyclovir – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings
Acyclovir, marketed under brand names like Zovirax and Sitavig, is a widely prescribed antiviral medication recognized for its efficacy against various herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, including genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles. Its mechanism of action involves a two-step phosphorylation process leading to the formation of acyclovir triphosphate, which selectively inhibits viral DNA polymerase, thereby impeding DNA synthesis and replication. This targeted approach minimizes damage to healthy cells, making acyclovir a potent antiviral agent specifically tailored to combat herpesvirus infections.
The uses of acyclovir extend beyond treating active infections to include preventive measures in immunocompromised individuals and management of conditions like neonatal herpes infections and herpes simplex encephalitis. Despite its effectiveness, acyclovir can induce various side effects ranging from gastrointestinal discomfort and headaches to rare but severe complications such as renal dysfunction and neurological effects. Dosage adjustments are necessary, especially in patients with renal impairment, and careful monitoring is warranted to prevent toxicity. Additionally, caution is advised regarding potential drug interactions, allergic reactions, and special considerations during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Vigilant monitoring and adherence to dosage guidelines ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes while minimizing risks associated with acyclovir therapy.

- This is lesson n# 41 in "A DRUG IN BRIEF" Series. In this video I'm gonna discuss almost all you need to know about Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) - Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) - Calcitriol - Calcidiol: Sources, Uses, Dosage, Side Effects, Mechanism of action, Deficiency, and Contraindications
- In less than 6 minutes you'll learn:
- What is Vitamin D 3?
Vitamin D belongs to the family of fat-soluble vitamins, which include vitamins A, D, E and K. These vitamins are absorbed well with fat and are stored in the liver and fatty tissues.
There are two main forms of vitamin D in the diet:
Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol): Found in plant foods like mushrooms.
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol): The flesh of fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and fish liver oils are among the best sources. Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks.
Natural sources of vitamin D are limited, especially if you're vegetarian or don't like fish.
Foods such as cow's milk, soy milk, orange juice, cereals, and oatmeal are sometimes fortified with vitamin D.
However, sunlight is the best natural source of vitamin D3. The UV rays from sunlight convert cholesterol in your skin into vitamin D3
- Learn more about Vitamin D mechanism of action, uses, dosage, side effects, and precautions in this video...

Learn more about magnesium, an essential cofactor to vitamin D, here: https://drbrg.co/4lXMBGk
Dr. Coimbra of Brazil is a pioneer in vitamin D research and developed the Coimbra Protocol, in which he treats his patients with high doses of vitamin D. This protocol has been very successful in resolving autoimmune conditions, with some of his patients taking up to 200,000 IU of vitamin D daily!
Vitamin D deficiency is not always easy to detect. Blood tests do not reflect what's going on deeper in your cells.
Taking too much vitamin D can be dangerous if you have hypercalcemia, or too much calcium in the blood. This can lead to kidney stones.
A lack of vitamin D is also dangerous! If you’re deficient in vitamin D, you are more susceptible to autoimmune diseases, which is currently the world’s largest health problem.
Vitamin D is involved in over 2500 genes and is intimately involved in every part of your immune system. You need a maintenance dose of 8,000 to 10,000 IU of vitamin D daily for healthy immune function.
Many people can not get adequate vitamin D from the sun or their food. Genetic factors can contribute to vitamin D resistance. Low magnesium, zinc, and vitamin K2 can also inhibit the absorption of vitamin D. Certain viruses downgrade vitamin D receptors, weakening your immune function. Our RDAs are also far too low.
There are several ways to maximize vitamin D benefits while also preventing adverse vitamin D side effects. Take the cofactors magnesium, zinc, and vitamin K2 with vitamin D. Limit your calcium intake, especially when taking a high dose of vitamin D. You can also increase fluid intake to 2.5 liters per day to prevent kidney stones.

3:10 Autoimmune conditions and vitamin D
3:19 Reducing the risk of kidney stones
In this video, we’re going to talk about vitamin D toxicity. Some people are afraid of taking too much vitamin D, when it may not be as scary as you might think.
According to an article by the Mayo Clinic, vitamin D may not actually be as toxic as was once believed.
In the 1940s, vitamin D was used for rheumatoid arthritis. But, the amounts being used were between 200,000 and 300,000 IUs of vitamin D. The reason this could have helped is that vitamin D helps support the immune system and helps lower inflammation.
In the 1950’s they were fortifying products like dairy products with vitamin D. But, there were some complaints from parents with children who had side effects. The fortification of vitamin D in dairy was banned in Europe, but not in some other countries, including America.
Years later, it was discovered that these children might have experienced these side effects due to a rare genetic disease called Williams syndrome. With Williams syndrome, you don’t actually want to take vitamin D at all.
Now, when you look at vitamin D, it always says something along the line of “don’ take too much, you could experience a toxic effect.”
But, according to this article by the Mayo Clinic, it would take getting 50,000 to 100,000 IUs of vitamin D for months to years before vitamin D would become toxic. This is actually a lot more than what most people consider toxic.
When talking about vitamin toxicity, we’re referring to hypercalcemia, which is too much calcium in the blood.
When people are afraid of vitamin D toxicity, they end up taking smaller amounts like 1,000 to 2,000 IUs per day. But, with this amount, it could actually take four months or more to bring a vitamin D deficiency up to a normal level.
If you want to decrease the potential risk of kidney stones, you could drink 2.5 liters of fluid every day, avoid taking calcium and avoid dairy.
When using high doses of vitamin D, always check with your doctor. High doses of vitamin D can increase blood/urine calcium levels resulting in calcium deposits in the kidney. Also drink 2.5 liters of fluids per day, take cofactors with vitamin D (magnesium, K2 and zinc) and have your doctor monitor your PTH, vitamin D blood levels and creatinine and avoid excess calcium supplements of high calcium foods when taking vitamin D levels over 10,000 IUs.

Dr. Klaper tells us about vitamin b12 benefits and the dangers of vitamin b12 deficiency. Due to modern sanitation, there is very little b12 vitamin in a plant based diet so we must take vitamin b12 vegan supplements. Both Methylcobalamin and Cyanocobalamin are about the same in terms of vitamin b12 absorption. Dr. Klaper warns that taking too much vitamin b12 has been shown to potentially increase the risk of certain cancers.
Question: Does our body store Vitamin B12? Do we need to take it daily?

A diabetes medication in short supply for the last two years often was prescribed to people who didn't have the disease, and prescribing rates varied dramatically across the country, new data shows.
In a recent study, Trilliant Health estimated prescription rate increases for Ozempic, a drug approved for diabetes in 2017. Its popularity exploded in mid-2021 after Wegovy, a higher dose of the same underlying medication, was approved for weight loss.

Viagra is commonly thought to be harmful to the heart. But is this really true? Dr. med. Dr. phil. Stefan Buntrock, a urologist from Göttingen, discusses the safety of PDE5-inhibitors such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, and Stendra for the heart. He explains that while there is a myth that these drugs are bad for the heart and blood pressure, they were actually originally developed as a circulatory drug for angina. PDE5 inhibitors have a niche in treating pulmonary hypertension and have been found to improve cardiac function and reduce inflammation. However, it is important not to combine them with nitrates as this can lead to a life-threatening drop in blood pressure. It is advisable to viewers to talk to their doctor before starting these pills and consult a cardiologist if in doubt.

The video discusses the differences between antipsychotics: quetiapine (Seroquel), olanzapine (Zyprexa), and clozapine (Clozaril). Quetiapine is approved for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and as an adjunct for depression. It is considered a "jack of all trades, master of none" and is useful for Parkinson's psychosis due to its low risk of extrapyramidal side effects. However, it has significant sedation, weight gain, and orthostatic hypotension side effects. The next difference between antipsychotics brings us to Olanzapine is one of the most effective antipsychotics, just below clozapine, but with significant weight gain and metabolic complications. It is effective for mood disorders and acute agitation, and smoking significantly impacts its levels. Anti-psychotic differences are notable in Clozapine, as it is the gold standard for treatment-resistant schizophrenia and reducing suicide risk. Despite its superior efficacy, it has serious side effects like agranulocytosis, myocarditis, constipation, and hypersalivation, requiring strict monitoring. However, it is cost-effective and provides improved outcomes, leading to the conclusion that it is underutilized, but patient adherence and understanding of adverse effects are crucial.
