The Methotrexate Side Effect You’ll Never Feel—Until It’s Too Late
The Methotrexate Side Effect You’ll Never Feel—Until It’s Too Late Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

You're taking methotrexate, feeling okay—so why does your doctor keep asking for labs? 💊

🧪Because methotrexate can cause silent issues like liver inflammation and low blood cell counts that only show up in your labs.

It’s the only way to catch silent side effects before they cause real problems. And yes, alcohol can make it worse.

Methotrexate works best when you and your doctor stay on the same page—and those labs help keep you safe.🦺

Lansoprazole: What Is It And How Does It Treat GORD And Acid Reflux? With Dr Daniel Atkinson
Lansoprazole: What Is It And How Does It Treat GORD And Acid Reflux? With Dr Daniel Atkinson Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Lansoprazole is a tablet that can help treat acid reflux and relieve heartburn. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what it is and how it works.

Lansoprazole is a treatment for GORD, and is in the group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPI). It works by inhibiting the enzymes in the lining of your stomach that are responsible for producing acid. This reduction in excess acid production relieves you of heartburn and acid reflux. It’s available in two doses (15mg and 30mg) and two forms (oral or dissolvable tablet). There’s also the generic version of Lansoprazole called Zoton FasTab, so if you want a cheaper drug that’s as effective as the branded one, Lansoprazole is the best option for you.

The Treated team can help you get the GORD treatment that’s best for your life. Subscribe, pause or stop whenever it suits you. Choose better.

Lamictal and Acute Depression
Lamictal and Acute Depression Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses lamictal (lamotrigine) and its use in acute bipolar depressions. While this medication can be very effective at preventing bipolar depressive episodes, it can take several months for a patient to achieve an effective dose (due to its risk of Stephen's Johnson Syndrome, a very serious rash) and individuals in an acute depression may benefit from stabilization with another medication, while this is being titrated safely.

Dr. Pagnani is the founder and medical director of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates, an Instructor at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for the Department of Psychiatry, he supervises psychiatric residents at Jefferson Hospital, he serves on the Young Professional Board of Uplift, the Center for Grieving Children and he maintains a private practice of Psychiatry in Philadelphia where he sees patients for one-time psychiatric evaluations and second opinions. He is a licensed physician and surgeon in NJ, PA, NY, MD, DE, FL and CA and can provide consultations to individuals via HIPAA compliant Telehealth visits living in these locations.

Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates is a private practice of psychiatry consisting of about 25 psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychotherapists with physical locations in Philadelphia and Paoli, PA and serving all of PA, NJ, NY and FL virtually via HIPAA compliant tele-psychiatry. Individuals seeking not only evaluations but long-term psychiatric care, can contact Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates directly.

These videos aim to increase awareness and discussion of mental health topics and to encourage struggling individuals to schedule an appointment directly with a mental health provider. Mental health needs to be normalized, and simply speaking about mental health topics openly, is an important first step.

Dr. Pagnani and Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates are NOT advocating for or against the use of any mentioned psychiatric medications for any specific individual. Additionally, any side effects mentioned are not a complete list of potential side effects or contraindications to taking any mentioned medications, and all risks and benefits of a medication should be discussed with an individual’s provider at an appointment, before starting, stopping or making changes to a medication regimen.

Klonopin Withdrawal
Klonopin Withdrawal Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Klonopin Withdrawal

Quitting benzodiazepines, including Klonopin, is not generally considered life-threatening and won’t usually cause permanent harm. However, it can still be uncomfortable enough to make quitting difficult without the help of a doctor.

If you quit Klonopin after becoming physically dependent, you may experience the following symptoms:

Anxiety
Appetite loss
Irritability
Muscle aches
Nausea
Tiredness
Trouble sleeping and resting

In rare cases, suddenly quitting benzodiazepines has been associated with temporary psychosis and delirium, where a person may have a mental break from reality, hallucinating and acting irrationally. This phenomenon isn’t fully understood but seems to be fairly rare. This situation should be treated as a medical emergency, less so because it is directly life-threatening and more so because a person might endanger themselves or others while in this state as a result of their confusion and irrational emotional state.

Pharmacology of Ketoprofen (Ketofen) ; Mechanism of action, Pharmacokinetics, Uses, Effects
Pharmacology of Ketoprofen (Ketofen) ; Mechanism of action, Pharmacokinetics, Uses, Effects Side Effects 1 Views • 2 months ago

Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. Here’s a breakdown of its pharmacology:

Mechanism of Action
Ketoprofen works by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), which is involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are mediators of inflammation, pain, and fever. By inhibiting COX, ketoprofen reduces the production of prostaglandins, thereby alleviating inflammation and pain.

Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Ketoprofen is rapidly absorbed following oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 0.5 to 2 hours.

Distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the body and binds extensively to plasma proteins (approximately 99%).

Metabolism: Ketoprofen is metabolized primarily in the liver by the enzymes CYP2C8 and CYP2C9, and is conjugated with glucuronic acid by UGT2B7.

Excretion: The metabolites are excreted mainly through urine. The elimination half-life of ketoprofen is approximately 0.9 to 3.3 hours.

Therapeutic Uses
Ketoprofen is used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

Rheumatoid arthritis

Osteoarthritis

Ankylosing spondylitis

Acute gouty arthritis

Tendinitis

Bursitis

Headache

Postoperative dental pain

Primary dysmenorrhea1.

Side Effects
Common side effects include:

Gastrointestinal discomfort (e.g., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)

Headache

Dizziness

Rash

Edema.

Warnings and Precautions
Cardiovascular Risk: Ketoprofen may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke.

Gastrointestinal Risk: It may cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation.

Renal Risk: Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, as it may worsen renal function

What is Ketoconazole? What is ketoconazole used for?

Ketoconazole, also known as Nizoral, is a medication prescribed for treating fungal infections. It comes in several forms: a 200-mg oral white tablet, a white topical cream for skin application, and a red-orange liquid shampoo for scalp use, particularly for managing dandruff.

Potential Adverse Reactions to Ketoconazole

Loss of perm-induced curls
Hair thinning or shedding
Drying of the skin
Skin irritation

Specific to the topical cream:

Ketoconazole cream

Skin irritation
Itchy sensation
Burning feeling
Scalp irritation

Specific to the oral tablets:
Early onset side effects:

Feelings of nausea and vomiting
Upset stomach

Later onset side effects (usually after more than one day of treatment):

Constipation
Loose stools or diarrhea
Temporary liver function changes
Elevated blood pressure
Itchy skin
Skin rashes
Dizziness
Headaches
Enlarged breasts and breast soreness, particularly in males

These are common side effects, but others may occur. All side effects should be reported to your healthcare provider.

Guidance for Ketoconazole Usage

If you experience stomach discomfort, take ketoconazole with food. Regular blood tests will be conducted to monitor liver function. If you notice unusual tiredness, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark-colored urine, or pale stools, inform your doctor immediately as these could indicate serious liver issues.

Ketoconazole can interact with various medications, altering their effectiveness. These include oral diabetic medications, warfarin, phenytoin, immunosuppressants (cyclosporine, sirolimus, tacrolimus), digoxin, midazolam, theophylline, methylprednisolone, and certain chemotherapy drugs like vincristine, etoposide, daunorubicin, doxorubicin, idarubicin, mitoxantrone, ifosfamide, and cyclophosphamide. Additionally, certain drugs can influence ketoconazole's effectiveness, such as antacids, ranitidine, famotidine, sucralfate, isoniazid, and rifampin.

Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications you're taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Check with your healthcare provider before starting any new medication while on ketoconazole.

If using the shampoo, avoid eye contact, apply it to damp skin of the affected and surrounding areas, lather, leave it for 5 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly with water.

Ketoconazole (Nizoral) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings
Ketoconazole, sold under the brand name Nizoral, is an antifungal medication available as oral tablets, creams, shampoos, and topical solutions. It treats various fungal infections, with topical forms addressing conditions like athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, dandruff, and seborrheic dermatitis, while oral tablets are reserved for severe infections like blastomycosis, histoplasmosis, and candidiasis due to potential serious side effects. Ketoconazole inhibits ergosterol synthesis, disrupting fungal cell membranes and leading to cell death. Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, and rashes, while serious effects may involve liver damage and hormonal changes. Dosages vary, with oral tablets typically ranging from 200–400 mg daily and topical applications used as directed. It interacts with medications such as warfarin, statins, corticosteroids, and antacids, necessitating caution due to its potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inhibition.
