Many thousands of men around the world are missing out on a life-extending prostate cancer drug that's available free in some countries.

Although not a cure, Abiraterone can help stop prostate cancer spreading to other parts of the body.

Recently one drug trial showed that Abiraterone could benefit a larger group of men with earlier stage tumours that hadn't yet started to spread.

The medicine works by lowering testosterone production in the body which can fuel some cancer cell growth. The study showed it could halve the risk of the cancer spreading and significantly reduce the chance of death six years on from diagnosis in that group.

However differences in national health care systems mean that while in some countries men are being given the treatment, many others are missing out.

The UK illustrates this health inequality. In England and Northern Ireland, the state national health service will only provide it for men with very advanced disease, when other treatments have failed. However in the neighbouring UK nations of Scotland and Wales the drug is more widely available.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Your child should not take Beyfortus if your child has a history of serious allergic reactions to nirsevimab-alip or any of the ingredients in Beyfortus.

Before your child receives Beyfortus, tell your healthcare provider about all of your child’s medical conditions, including if your child:

•has ever had a reaction to Beyfortus.
•has bleeding or bruising problems. If your child has a problem with bleeding or bruises easily, an injection could cause a problem.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines your child takes, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Your infant should not receive a medicine called palivizumab if they have already received Beyfortus in the same RSV season.

Serious allergic reactions have happened with Beyfortus. Get medical help right away if your child has any of the following signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction:

• swelling of the face, mouth, or tongue
• difficulty swallowing or breathing
• unresponsiveness
• bluish color of skin, lips, or under fingernails
• muscle weakness
• severe rash, hives, or itching

The most common side effects of Beyfortus include rash and pain, swelling, or hardness at the site of your child’s injection. These are not all the possible side effects of Beyfortus. Call your healthcare provider if you have questions about side effects.

INDICATION

Beyfortus is a prescription medicine used to help prevent a serious lung disease caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in:

•Newborns and babies under 1 year of age born during or entering their first RSV season.
•Children up to 24 months of age who remain at risk of severe RSV disease through their second RSV season.

Cathy Eng, MD, FACP, medical oncologist, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, discusses the combination of bevacizumab with FOLFOXIRI (irinotecan, oxaliplatin, fluorouracil, and folinate) as a treatment for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Eng says the combination came about through medical professional's use of bevacizumab in the frontline as a treatment for mCRC, leading one Italian research group to start the TRIBE trial.

Kathleen Essel, MD, a fellow at University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, discusses the findings from a recent trial investigating the safety of long-term treatment with bevacizumab (Avastin) in patients with ovarian cancer.

Essel says the results from this trial can provide a lot of comfort, since patients who did well initially on this treatment subsequently did well later on. Findings demonstrated that adverse effects found during initial treatment did not worsen later on.

Interestingly, patients with an initial increase in blood pressure did not experience this adverse event in the long-term. Researchers were most concerned about cardiovascular effects or hypertension and were surprised to find bevacizumab was generally well tolerated as a long-term treatment in this patient population.

Avastin (Bevacizumab) is a targeted cancer therapy for various types of advanced and metastatic cancers, including lung and colon cancer. In this video, #oncologist Stephen Lemon MD discusses how #Avastin works, as well as what types of side effects it may cause. Considered an angiogenesis inhibitor, Avastin stops cancer from growing by cutting off the cancer's blood supply. Avastin was the first angiogenesis inhibitor approved for the treatment of cancer in the United States. (Angiogenesis is the process of how new capillary blood vessels grow in the body)

Avastin is currently approved for treating 6 different types of metastatic and advanced cancers, including rectal and #coloncancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer, cervical cancer, ovary cancer and brain #cancer.
